Great hostess with a perfect apartment in Bologna
My wife and I are pleased to tell others what a great hostess Ren is and what a beautiful apartment she has to offer at a very reasonable price. The apartment is set up to accommodate four individuals comfortably. It has every accommodation and comfort one can want or expect. There are bikes to ride into town and an outdoor pool which is very rare to find - a private pool in Bologna. Ren is a complete and perfect hostess and conversationalist. She goes all out making the guests' stay as pleasant and easy as possible including recommendations on sites to see locally and, if you have a car, within driving distance of Bologna. Parking on site is a plus. The property is immaculately clean and safe with a walled and gated yard. The neighborhood is quiet and convenient. The hostess also equips the kitchen with plenty of food, utensils, , cooking tools, etc. so that your first night's stay and morning breakfast requires no run to the grocery store - the IPER-COOP which she recommends is a shopping experience well worth the visit even if you don't plan to cook large meals. My wife and I cannot recommend more highly any other place we have stayed and as Homeaway.com owners and hosts for two properties at the Jersey Shore, we have learned a lot about being better hosts ourselves from our new friend in Bologna. Bellissimo apartment, great hospitatly!
My family and I stayed 6 nights this July in Renée's and Donald's beautiful and elegant apartment. Upon arrival, Renée walked us around the apartment and made us feel right at home. She had also stocked the refrigerator with cold drinks and goodies for breakfast, including a delicious coffee cake and fresh peaches. The apartment was perfectly appointed and had everything you would need. Two beautiful bedrooms, large bath, lovely dining, salon, and terrace. The kitchen was appointed with everything you could need to prepare your meals. We enjoyed cooking in this space often. The weather was warm, and we enjoyed a swim in the pool nightly. Renée provided us with information about Bologna and the surrounding areas that allowed us to enjoy a week of culture, local food, and history. Our trip was not "touristy," but one that could only be organized by a local from the area. Her knowledge and insight was so appreciated. I'll never forget her kindness and her emails. It truly was a spectacular trip! I highly recommend staying at this apartment.

A Wonderful Experience
We stayed with Renee and Don for 6 days in their lovely home in Bologna. Upon arrival Renee had prepared a large platter of regional salumi and cheeses, stocked beverages and wine and even baked a cake for us! She walked us through the property and gave us suggestions for things to do in town. The apartment is very clean and well furnished with all the necessary amenities. It is quite comfortable and the neighborhood is quiet, but only a walk or bike ride from the center of town. Renee's knowledge of Bologna greatly enhanced our trip. Her love of food and wine was invaluable. We followed her recommendations for restaurants and sampled local fare, all of which we enjoyed immensely. Renee's knowledge of the area's architecture and culture also added greatly to our experience. She even recommended and reserved tickets for a concert of Classical Music in a small beautiful Chapel for our group. Bologna is a hidden treasure in Italy that was made much more pleasurable through the efforts of our hostess. I would highly recommend staying at this apartment if you plan a trip here. Renee also recommended some excellent restaurants for us in Venice to enjoy upon our departure. Truly a gracious hostess!

Lovely, spacious apartment, fantastic hospitality!
We had a lovely 3-night stay at Renee's spacious and comfortable duplex, upstairs from where she lived. Clean, comfortable, attractive--and with bicycles for 4 and a swimming pool (one of only a handful of private pools in Bologna)! Renee was amazingly attentive--provided us with beautiful and abundant breakfast food and drink, even gave us a bicycle tour of Bologna! (Americans used to wider roads and more rules should beware of biking in Italy, though.) At least as important for our family of 4 tourists who didn't speak Italian, and who had just arrived in Italy, she gave us useful basic information about everything--how to buy bus tickets, where to find groceries, what an Italian phone's busy signal and dial tone sounded like, etc. She helped us with buying advanced tickets for the next stage of our trip (in Florence) and printing up vouchers. She introduced us to local foods and drinks. In a word, she and her apartment were wonderful, in equal measures. If you need to be right in the heart of the Old City, or if you cannot climb a single flight of stairs, then this would not be for you. For us, it was an outstanding choice.

About the host

Host profile image
A New Yorker who worked and lived abroad, I came to Bologna to work for 2 years but purchased a property here, learned Bolognese dialect and stayed intermittently for 20. I studied art history at university and received diplomas in food and wine so I can offer some sound suggestions on enjoying art, food and wine in Bologna and the surrounding towns.

Why they chose this property

The house was built in the aftermath of WWII when Bologna like the rest of Italy began its relentless march to post-war affluence in a paradoxical neighborhood- the 'Bolognina' that grew through the immigration of manual laborers from the countryside when the railway supplanted canals for trade and commerce. Yet today this area thrives thanks to small, entrepreneurial companies, several new Bologna Univ. departments and the new City Hall infrastructure which is just 15 blocks away. The house is close to the most modern shopping centers, plenty of Italian supermarkets and the very traditional outdoor food markets. It is near the newly (but light handedly) redeveloped old ironworks and the 'Blond's Bridge' that host popular and often free entertainment in the summer. There is the old Navile canal nearby, the hidden Chiusa di Corticella loch which opened in the 12th century and closed in 1948. The house doesn't pretend to be more than what it really is: well kept, welcoming, clean, comfortable, and practical. Another paradox: it's a 10 minute, old fashioned bike ride on bike paths crossing just 20 blocks to the Eurostar, one of the fastest, most modern trains in Europe. You’ll forget you're in the city in the quiet privacy of the house, pool, and lovely garden but it's walking distance to good local restaurants, easy to reach an animated cocktail bar or moving cultural event downtown if you want excitement, or get to a quiet shore near the Reno river and its canals for an unusual change of scenery.

What makes this property unique

Centrally located, on site parking, managed by friendly, educated resident on the property that you can count on to help you navigate Bologna and Italy-related travel, help you find the most interesting and good value for money food, wine, entertainment (often free) in the region. 10 months of the year you can ride the bicycles to go grocery shopping and touring. Or in the warmer months, just enjoy the garden, swim and relax between your sightseeing.
