About the host

Host profile image
I enjoy hosting and typically do not greet guests. I find that most guests prefer to have the home all to theirselves. I am available at any time for questions by text, phone or email. The cottage is part of an old estate. The first time I saw it I fell in Love. Here is a bit of the history Copied from "The Aldersonin". One of Alderson’s most illustrious native sons was Eldridge Campbell. He was born in Alderson December 1, 1901, the son of Dr. Eldridge H. and Bessie Spessard Campbell. Dr. Campbell was a well known physician and he and Mrs. Campbell were members of prominent Monroe families. Eldridge went to the University of Virginia, and while there, won a Rhodes Scholarship. He went to Balliol College, Oxford, on the scholarship in 1925. (Click on photo for larger view)After he returned to the United States, he received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1927. He was on the faculty of Albany Medical College, Albany, New York, as a professor of surgery from 1934-1956. Eldridge Campbell was a Colonel, Medical Corps, U. S. Army from 1942—46. He was Surgeon General in Japan and Korea in 1952. Eldridge Campbell, scholar, surgeon, professor, soldier, was decorated and honored more times than can be listed. Two honors are indicative of his greatness. He was decorated with the Legion of Merit, and he was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Campbell married Eleanor Brown, the daughter of a great Johns Hopkins doctor, Thomas R. Brown. He died December 15, 1956. His sister Elizabeth, Mrs. Carl Bivens, lives in Alderson

Why they chose this property

This house is located in the most beautiful part of West Virginia. The town is a Christmas Card Town with a Norman Rockwell feel. Nice, friendly people, safe and several stores, galleries and fun things to do. The Alderson Memorial Bridge is often used for street fairs, festivals, walking, biking and fishing. The bridge is part of the town parks and recreation and is no longer used for traffic. Fun photo op over the river or anything you like.

What makes this property unique

The Cottage is full of Love. It is an adorable folk victorian home that has been renovated. The home holds its character and style with the original hardwood floors in some areas, Original mantle and the grand front porch with the Gingerbread Trim and pickets. The Cottage was once a wedding cottage and Im told the yards were set up for many guests. The house is located on an old estate. The main house was built in 1860. The same year Abraham Lincoln was elected President. The cottage is presumably built in the early 1900.s. Former owners of the property were a well known physician Eldridge Campbell and Carl Bivens President of the Bank of Alderson. Im told that events were held here that were very elegant and that the Estate was "The Place to Be" The trees are mostly white oak. 150 years old and older. A few are walnut, cherry, sycamore, white pine, holly, dogwood, redbud and others. One Catalpa Tree Remains. The Catalpa Tree is near the cottage and plays host to many animals and birds making their dens and nests in the trunk and limbs. The branch spans of the white oaks are some of the longest if not the longest in the state. Stretching across the driveway and into the yards. I was fortunate to meet the daughter of one of the former owners. She came to visit her childhood home on a sunny summer day with her husband from South Carolina. I was so happy to talk to her. She is 94 years old and told me she mowed the yards with a manual mower with her sisters. She also told me that her grandfather planted the trees. I had often suspected that they were planted being the spacing and the position of the tree lines. We talked for awhile and she told me of the events here and that the Alderson High School also had events. They future home makers of America held their yearly banquet here in the yard and all the girls recieved awards. She told me of how she tended very large gardens that extended all the way out to the bluffs.
