We came to the area for a high school water polo tournament, and this cottage worked great for us. Loved sitting on the covered deck with coffee in the morning and enjoying the view while our dogs roamed the yard. If you are looking for a modern, high-end place, this isn't for you. But if you are looking for a clean and comfortable place with thoughtful amenities and a surprisingly beautiful wooded setting, it's perfect.
We came to town to visit friends and celebrate a birthday. Amazed to see homes built on cliff edges. Did a lot of walking 'up/down hills'. Visited the Phipps, which is a must see. And loved the old architecture of several buildings in the city.
The cottage is very whimsical and cozy. The view was amazing night and day. We enjoyed the fireplace and the French pastry shoppe La Gourmandine. We would rent this place again.
The cottage was very nice and comfortable. I do agree with some of the other reviewers about the stairs to the second floor, they are a little narrow and steep but were okay for us. Driveway was a little tricky but if you back in you will be fine. The outdoor lights were a nice touch, and the back porch is nice to have your coffee in the morning and watch the birds and squirrels! Laura was a great host and had a lot of information on the area to give ideas. Thank you again Laura!!!!!
Finding it was challenging, but once we did, it was perfect for us!
Great “home base” it’s about 15-20 minutes from most places you want to go. Then retreat back to your cabin.
Super communication with host. It’s a clean, thoughtfully well stocked place - great fire pit. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Very cute house on a dead end street, tucked away on the ridge in the woods, just a few minutes from downtown Carnegie. The house is very quirky but a lovely stay that feels private and easy to access all the things you’ll want from your stay in Pittsburgh!
Directions to the property and description were very accurate. Parking was tricky but as described. The outside area was very peaceful and enjoyable. The floors seemed sticky in the bathrooms and the refrigerator was quite dirty with half melted ice cream in the freezer. Otherwise it was clean. My only complaint would be the dog dishes and used dog toys. Having used dog dishes and used dog toys makes you worry about spreading viruses such as parvo. A very nice gesture to offer these for the guests! But something to consider. We really did enjoy staying there and would definitely consider the home in the future
The online listing doesn't do this amazing little cottage justice. It is clean, cozy, and the view is gorgeous. Its like being out in the woods....but you are not! The cottage is decorated so cute and it has all the comforts of home. The deck is so relaxing and it even has an immaculate gas grill and a firepit. Laura is an amazing host. If this were my property I would live there full time. I was so sad to leave!
My mother and I stayed in this small home for 2 nights. It was clean and comfortable, and while I didn’t mind the house and rooms at all, it was not a great fit for my mother who is 82. The staircase is very narrow and doesn’t have a railing- and she was nervous going down the street since the house is secluded by the many trees around it. In addition, the portable AC units were fine since the area is shaded, but my mother thought they were too loud and wanted them off at night. I would definitely stay there again, but with a younger family.
Loved the house! The beds were comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. There was plenty of hot water and good water pressure. The back deck was beautiful with lots of birds and squirrels to watch. Wifi connection was strong and easy to connect to.
As others have mentioned, the actual driveway down by the house is a bit tricky to get out of. Parking in the driveway on arrival is easy, whether you back in or face forward. It's getting out that's difficult. We ended up pulling in facing forward so that we could back out to leave. To do this, when first arriving at the house from Terrace Avenue, we made a slight right turn into the driveway pulling forward towards the fence. Then we backed up to reposition the car to drive straight towards the house with the car facing forward in the driveway. When leaving, we backed up straight onto Terrace Avenue, then straight forward to drive away. It was very easy doing it this way versus backing in on arrival. There is zero traffic on Terrace Avenue because it's essentially a private road with only a few houses.
The only other thing to make note of are the stairs in the house. The house is older and the stairs are very narrow and steep. The bedroom and the loft/trundle bed are upstairs so the only way to go to bed is to take the stairs. The full bath and shower are downstairs which means we ended up using the stairs a lot during our stay.
Overall, we had an enjoyable stay in this getaway house near Pittsburgh.
Seemless checkin and checkout, impeccable communication from the host, and a great house for our stay in Pittsburgh! Definitely will consider renting this place again for future visits to see my family in Pittsburgh.
Had a great time (once we found it). Very private and secluded. Neighbors were very friendly. We felt at ease and safe. Our dog loved it. My only complaint I have is there is not a lot of room to let the dog loose, but I knew this in advance. Thanks for letting us stay.
Many places advertise they are dog-friendly but really just mean they allow your dogs to accompany you; the Carnegie Cottage truly welcomes your pups. Dog bowls were waiting with a little welcome treat as well as a blanket and toys for them. The patio also had a lead so they could explore the yard freely. As this is a typical Pittsburgh house ( I would know since I grew up very close to here), a senior dog may have an issue with the steepness of the steps but my 13 year old boxer did fine as long as I was in front or in back of here. An additional plus is that Carnegie Park is very close by. We walked our dogs there in the morning and discovered a dog park there- what an unexpected treat! The location is fantastic! Easy access to the highways that lead to the city as well as suburbs but the house is surrounded by a wooded area so you would never know how close you are. We would definitely stay here again!
Our stay was to help our son who is moving to the area with home renovations. We didn't spend much time at the house other than coming home at the end of the day and cleaning up. It was nice that we could bring our dog, and we felt comfortable in the space with him. The weather was rainy, but the back porch looked like a great space to hang out if it had been nicer.
Very unexpected; secluded oasis in the middle
of the city. Hidden gem!
Peaceful camp like experience (outside)
with the added bonus of sleeping in a house!
Driveway is as described and should be heeded.
A bit tricky but maneuverable.
However, what tops all of that is Laura allowing our fur babies to be with us!!
Great experience!
We were in town as our son is graduating from Allegheny College and he was checking out the neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. This was a great access site without having to go through downtown Pittsburgh. Thank you for your hospitality and sharing your hideaway in the hills with us.
We stayed in the Cottage due to the birth of our first grandchild and because we didn't exactly know when she'd enter this world we were in Pittsburgh for a few weeks. We chose the cottage after spending 2 weeks in a hotel which was not ideal and we had our 2 Labrador Retrievers with us. The cottage was just what we were looking for. a clean home with a nice layout close to our daughter that didn't break the bank. It is hard to find accommodations for 2 larger dogs (ours are 65lbs each). the hotel was very restrictive but the cottage allowed us to spread out a bit more and both provided a nice place to stay but a separate work area for me. I couldn't recommend this more for dog owners. 1) the owner did not lay down a ridiculous number of rules (our dogs are very well behaved and well trained) 2) it was close to a very nice dog park where we ran them almost every day 3) it was very quiet and almost secluded 4) it was reasonably priced. The accommodations were good, the bed comfortable, the water hot and the full kitchen allowed us to prepare some decent meals (had a nice grill too). Many reviews cite the street and the driveway as difficult. We did a dry run to evaluate it the day before we moved in and after a couple of days it was easy peasy. I highly recommend backing into the driveway then backing up the street then turning around. it feels weird the first time you do it but then you get used to it. Laura was a great host as well and very accommodating.
This was a great house for us to stay in while visiting family in the area. The view is beautiful, and its very peaceful. The space was very clean, and the host was wonderful about our fragrance sensitivities. The kitchen is fully functional for cooking our own meals or storing and reheating leftovers. There's a small yard for the dog to run around in, but the neighborhood is also nice for walking. The only things to be mindful of are that this is a very hilly area, so the driveway takes a little practice turning into from the road (but the host provides great directions!), and the stairs in the house are very steep -as shown in the pictures. Laura was a wonderful host for our stay and we will be happy to stay here again for future visits!

I grew up in Pittsburgh and purchased this home (my first) in 2009. My dad and I remodeled it together. I love the house, but a few years ago I met someone and moved out to the country about an hour South of Pittsburgh. I live on a 3 acre farm that is mostly wooded. I have a huge garden (learned how to can) and also raise chickens! I live for the outdoors and I can always be found hiking, camping, boating, swimming, kayaking (and every other outdoor activity you can think of). I am also an animal lover (which is why I allow pets in my cottage). I really enjoy hosting folks in my home! I believe this is the career path I was meant to follow!
Why they chose this property
I was renting an apartment on Main street in Carnegie. I love to walk, so one day during a walk, I noticed a street I had never been down. As I walked down I came across this house that was completely covered in trees and kinda reminded me of a "hobbit house" (this is also how my mother referred to it as well)... and there was a for sale sign in front of it! I couldn't believe it. It was the perfect little house for me. Close to the city yet close to nature! It needed ALOT of work, but my dad and I remodeled it together (while i lived in it). I love the house (and still do) and now I share it with all of you lovely people!
I also donate the entire pet fee to my local animal shelter: Bridge To Home Animal Rescue
