Exceptional!

Absolutely beautiful location with a view of the beach through the living room and the master bedroom windows. The owners could not be any nicer! Lesley is lovely, involved, communicative, and available. The beach in steps away from the house and the neighborhood is friendly and warm. Exceptional and highly recommended!

Beautiful view!

Great spot steps from a small beach. The view was beautiful! We were pleasantly surprised with the space and proximity to the beach, and were even able to walk to a restaurant. The house has everything you’d need. The WiFi was spotty and unreliable, but otherwise everything about our stay was amazing and we hope to return!

Right at the beach, and close to everything

We enjoyed our stay and loved the beach and neighborhood. The pictures do not do the location justice. The local people are very friendly, and accommodating. We had everything we needed to enjoy our time there. I would definitely recommend this location and property.

Loved our stay

We SO loved staying here over 4th of July, watching the amazing neighborhood fireworks display, sleeping in every morning, fishing off the rocks. The house was immaculately clean with comfortable beds. The owners were away, so we were able to use the second floor balcony. I think it would have been a bummer if that was off limits, although I would have loved to meet Lesley in person, she does very important work with the elderly. Also note - only one of the bedrooms has an AC.

Perfect place on the sound

We had the best time staying here over Memorial Day. The hosts were very helpful and available to us to make our stay comfortable. You can't beat the location. The views are stunning are stunning and it's so simple to spend time enjoying the coast. The beach is right across the street, too. There is a grocery store and a couple of restaurants less then 1/2 a mile away. There are many great restaurants and bars downtown (about 10 minutes) we took the train up from the city and had no problem using car services to get around. Overall, our stay was wonderful and we are already making plans s to return.

Great location for visit to Yale

My wife and I and my parents stayed here for my daughter’s long graduation weekend at Yale. The accommodations were very comfortable and just as advertised. Beautiful location right on the beach, close to groceries and other essentials, and an easy 15 minute drive to and from campus (or 20 minutes via the scenic route avoiding the freeway). Hosts were helpful and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful Home

We stayed here over Christmas while visiting our son, daughter-in-law and new granddaughter. The home had everything we needed and felt cozy even in the winter time. The views of Long Island Sound were spectacular! It was great to wake up every morning to ocean views.

Cozy home amazingly located

The house is a super cozy and wonderfully located in front of the beach. Their neighbors are super friendly and make you feel welcomed the minute you arrive. Going back to the house, it has everything you need and in anything else you need, Joseph and his wife are there to help you. They were super accommodating when I stayed.

Wonderful accommodations for graduation weekend!

My senior adult parents and I traveled from the southeastern US to Anchor Cottage to attend my son's graduation. The cottage was just perfect for us! The view was spectacular, the setting was serene, and the cottage was so clean and comfortable. Lesley and Joseph were very flexible with our arrival and check-in time. The cottage was only about a 12-minute drive from the Yale campus. Our only regret is that with all the graduation festivities, we got to spend so little time at the cottage.

Dangerous! Negligent! Perfectly beautiful views and location!

The morning of the first full day on the property, I fell on the stairs that were an optical illusion. I thought I was making the last step onto the living room floor but instead I stepped off and missed the last two steps. I was badly bruised and couldn't put weight on my left ankle or knee. I notified the Host, Lesley, of the incident and told her how shaken up I was! She said she was sorry. I told her exactly how it happened and that I couldn't believe other people haven't fallen down those stairs before! How dangerous they were! I don't recall if she made a comment. She was there to look into a problem we had with the toilet not flushing. She left that day without comment even as I was still talking to her from an adjoining room. (I could not walk!) I also called and spoke with Joseph Hartman, a co-owner, who said Lesley had already called him to tell him of the incident. He suggested that because her business was in health care she could help me get some medical attention or whatever I needed. I never heard back from her that day. By that evening, I was in terrible pain and had to cancel my plans to attend a benefit concert - instead went to the Milford Hospital Emergency where I had x-rays and CT Scan that confirmed that I had two bone fractures near my left knee. My trip was ruined and VRBO as well as the hosts were not helpful. VRBO told me to ask the host if she had filed a liability claim yet? Was that my responsibility? I was not given a direct answer. A long way from home with no help. It was a lovely location, the bed was good and bathroom seemed clean with the exception of the used bar of soap left in the shower with a black curly hair embedded in it! The stairs were steep without adequate hand railing and transitioned from carpeted stairs and landing to hardwood steps to the hardwood floor. At additional expense, I was able to change my flight home with my travel companion one week early. We've been back one week today. I am still waiting for a courtesy phone call or email to ask about my condition but, after a week has passed, I don't believe they care or feel any responsibility for the horrendous turn of events. Expensive! Disappointing! Negligent! My vacation was ruined and the nightmare isn't over. It will be weeks before I'm off of crutches and able to return to my daily activities. I wonder what they've done about the dangerous stairs and other trip hazards in the house? I would guess - probably nothing......

Peaceful and Delightful.

The Anchor Cottage was perfect for my stay over the winter holidays. The house itself was nice - not too big not too small and, had it not been winter, I would have really enjoyed many evenings relaxing on the outdoor porch or patio. The best part about it is how quiet and secluded it is from the world - the beach is just a few steps across the road and offers the perfect early morning view. Thanks to Lesley and Joseph for having us!

Quaint, cozy, comfortable & relaxing.

Our month stay at Anchor Cottage was everything we had hoped for and more. Leslie and Joseph are wonderful hosts and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Anchor Cottage is cozy, clean and very comfortable. It's located across from Anchor Beach offering spectacular views. We enjoyed long walks along the beautiful shores of Milford. Neighbors and residents of Woodmont Burough are very friendly and made us (including Winston our Boxer) feel right at home. When our travels bring us back to Connecticut we definitely will come back to Anchor Cottage. To the Hartmans, thank you again!

Wonderful house at the beach

This place was one of the best I've ever stayed! A big, cozy and comfortable house with everything one needs and a marvellous view to the sea makes the best of a holiday in New England. A bit more than an hour from New York City makes Milford a good place to stay. Over all there are the owners, who are very friendly and nice people to talk to. We'd love to come back again!

Great place! Great location!

I stayed at Anchor Cottage for a week in September. Pictures are exact - the cottage is clean, cozy and comfortable, and has everything you could want while on vacation. The location can't be beat. It is directly across from Anchor Beach with great views from the living room and master bedroom. It is a short walk to a small plaza that includes a grocery store, drugstore, coffee shop, and ice cream shop. It is also a short walk to two restaurants. There is plenty to do in the area, or if you just want to relax, it is perfect for that too. It is in a great neighborhood with very friendly people. I took a walk every morning along the beautiful Oceanside - peaceful and serene. I even struck up some lengthy conversations with people I would meet while sitting on the benches that line the sidewalks all along the ocean. I'm so glad to have found Anchor Cottage and am hoping to go back for a week in the spring. Thank you to Lesley and Joseph (very nice people) for sharing this little piece of paradise in Milford.

Great Family Rental

Our family of four stayed at Anchor Cottage for a week in early August. We received a welcome letter with details about the rental, check in, and the neighborhood well in advance of our travel. Joseph greeted us upon our arrival and showed us around the rental. The two bedrooms were perfect for us (our children are 7 and 11). The best parts were clearly the views of the water and the fact that the beach is directly across the street. My son is an early riser so the two of us would go out and walk along the water each morning looking for hermit crabs. If you have older children and/or you plan on spending a lot of time indoors, you might need a rental with more square footage, but this is perfect for a family of four with elementary/middle school children who love being outside at the beach.

Clean, comfortable, peaceful space right on the waterfront .

My husband and I needed a peaceful retreat in between one move and the next. We were so pleased with this seaside home. Everything was comfortable and clean. Stocked kitchen and laundry room. Easy internet if you need it. We took many walks along the waterside and long relaxing rests on benches throughout the day watching the tide roll in and out. The friendly people were so welcoming. Nice ! We also walked to Scribner's one night and had a delish seafood dinner. Excellent service and atmosphere too. Overall the experience was just what we needed.

A cozy set-up with great views, very accomodating hosts, and historic charm.

We arrived mid-July, and stayed for a week. Upon arrival we immediately met our hosts Joseph and Leslie, and their neighbor Larry. We actually had a slightly larger group than recommended, but, Joseph and Leslie helped to accommodate our family without issue. We found the home to be as described, and ready for our arrival. It is cozy, comfortable, and does have amazing views of Anchor Beach. I would like to thank our hosts for the extras we needed, that they provided for us without issue---often times without us even asking. Our group included 4 children (ages 3 - 13), and all said it was their best trip yet---well, our 3 year old more or less nodded, but you get the idea. We were able to enjoy the beach often, boat with the kids, fly kites, play games, relax, and enjoy meals with family in the home when we chose to eat in. I would recommend this rental, and would gladly stay again with my wife and kids. Until then, we will miss the sound of the surf and the historic area. And again...I would like to thank Joseph and Leslie for their hospitality and support. We enjoyed meeting them. Their neighbor Larry was a very enjoyable person to speak with as well, and offered us his kayaks on several occasions. Very nice...

Great place and perfect location!

We really enjoyed our stay in Milford. The duplex was clean and had everything we needed. Lesley and Joseph were available for anything we needed, which we really didn't need anything but they were there to make sure our stay was perfect. You can walk to some wonderful restaurants and the beach is right out front. The next door neighbors were charming and made even more recommendations!

Anchor Cottage is AMAZING!

The cottage is cute, nicely furnished and clean. Listing photos are spot on. Gorgeous water views and sunsets can be seen from the living room and master bedroom windows. Walk around the corner of the main house for sunrise views. Having Anchor Beach directly across the street from the cottage is fantastic! Walking, biking, swimming, kayaking, people-watching, dinning at Scribner's are all right outside your door or around the corner. Lesley and Joseph are wonderful hosts; friendly, welcoming, and extremely helpful. Thank you for a terrific vacation. I'm looking forward to renting again next July.

About the host

Hosted by Joseph Hartman

Host profile image
I grew up in England and came to the US in High School then to Connecticut for Yale where I am now an Associate Fellow. I owned a 25 room Victorian Inn on the shore for 10 years, winning the Governor's Award for service. Hospitality is in my DNA! For the past 20 years I have owned Griswold Home Care and won the CT SBA Business of the Year award after being nominated by US Sen Richard Blumenthal. We have also received awards from the Alzheimer's and Parkinson 's Associations. My partner, Joseph, and I, are a quiet but sociable couple who have enjoyed many relationships with our compatible long-term tenants.

Why they chose this property

I'd lived in New Haven for decades before wanting a second home on the shore (without dealing with the Q Bridge!) Nothing in Connecticut beats the well-known spectacular views combined with the ocean-side walking and friendly Borough of Woodmont within Milford. Located on a point (where we own the land to high water tide) the views are sun up to sunset. Added to that small, good restaurants and a mini-mall are all within waking. Just park your cars and stay. I have an award winning garden on the front of the house with a fountain for dogs on the outside of the fieldstone wall.Outside the kitchen is a grilling deck that wraps around to the patio with seating for six. This is the first time we have made this sought-after 2-storey home available for the summer season.

What makes this property unique

It's the views from the living room and master bedroom that first draw people. The house maintains its original beadboard walls, narrow stairs to the second floor and the yellow leaf pine flooring from the 1880's but the high ceilings are newly sheetrocked with ceiling fans (as well as AC but you may not need it on the water). The kitchen is small but leads to the grilling deck and is fully equipped for year-round living. We even include basic condiments! You'll also enjoy the high quality linens and original artwork.
