About this property

Chianti estate with farmhouse/tower, guesthouse and pool near Florence

The 9 acre (3.6 hectare) estate includes landscaped gardens, an orchard, olive and oak groves, and two houses which sit on a natural terrace facing Castello di Verrazzano to the South and Castello di Vicchiomaggio to the West. Passing through the vineyards, you arrive at an iron gate, which opens onto a cypress-lined drive taking you first to the sunlit, airy Guesthouse nestled in front of the olive grove -and then to the main Tower/Farmhouse, perched over the oak forest. Both houses are spacious and exquisitely furnished.

Behind the main house, in a stunning panoramic setting, is the NEW pool (10 meters by 4, with a depth of 1.4 meters) with pergola and stunning view of the castle from the chaise longues. (Pictures in June) Guests are kindly requested to abide by a set of posted Rules for the use of the pool which include, amongst others, a prohibition of diving, running around, and the use by unaccompanied children (below age 16).

The property has a total of six bedrooms (five double ones and one single) and five full bathrooms, sleeps 11-14 and is ideal for a large group of family or friends; it has private living quarters for a couple or a small family in the guesthouse. We are about 20 km (12.5 miles) south of Florence--a beautiful drive or bus ride on the Via Chiantigiana. Greve, with its lively piazza, shops and restaurants, is less than 3 miles away. Further afield, we are surrounded by medieval hill-towns, monasteries, wineries and restaurants. For golf lovers, the world-famous Ugolino Golf Club is a fifteen-minute drive away. The area also offers outstanding opportunities for hiking, biking and horse-back riding. E-bikes and vespas are readily available for rent.

The area abounds with amazing restaurants--from rustic to Michelin-starred.
Eating-in is equally pleasurable and made easy by the freshest fare offered in town by the storied butchers, bread ovens, cheese, fruit and vegetable markets. Federica, the House Manager, can arrange cooking classes in the expansive kitchen or you can buy "una bistecca alla fiorentina" and grill outdoors or over the fireplace in the kitchen.

The location is magical from dawn to moonlit nights and across the seasons. Pictures do not capture the magic of this place and the views of the castles and tcypress trees emerging from the morning mist and framed by your bedroom windows when you awake. You must experience it yourselves.

About the host

Hosted by Federica Magnanini

Host profile image
The owners - he Italian, she American -bought the property in 2022, thereafter lovingly renovating and furnishing it with art and antiques passed on through the generations within their family. They named it "La Torretta" after their family home in Bologna. They asked their friend of many years, Federica Magnanini, who lives nearby in Tavarnuzze, to be the Property Manager. Among her many qualities, Federica speaks excellent English, having lived several years with us in Washington DC.

I am Fede, 49 years old, Milanese by birth but Tuscany is my adopted home and I consider the owners my extended family. I love animals, the mountains and hiking. I have two daughters and a long term partner who this year will become my husband! I work at a nearby historic villa/estate, organizing special events and would be happy to organize a wine tasting there for your party.

It was love at first sight when I saw this beautiful property, and agreed to manage it with the vision of sharing its historic sites, events, activities, cooking and bounty with our guests. I will greet you upon arrival and am only a chat away if you need help booking a restaurant or other services such as hair salon or bike rentals. In advance of your visit, I am happy to arrange an in-house chef, babysitting, in-house massage, extra cleaning services, cooking classes, wine tasting or a tour of the famed Impruneta terracotta works.

Why they chose this property

We chose this part of Chianti because of its beauty, weather, culinary traditions, convenience and history. The Castles of Vicchiomaggio and Verrazzano, built in the Eighth Century and later converted to Renaissance villas, are amongst the oldest in Tuscany. Vicchiomaggio played host to Leonardo da Vinci and Verrazzano was the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, a XVI Century captain who discovered New York Bay . Nearby Montefioralle gave birth to another celebrated explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, after whom America was named. The art cities of Florence and Siena are a short drive away, as are Badia a Passignano, Panzano, Radda, Castellina, Brolio, Badia a Coltibuono and the hilltop villages, which make Chianti unique. Also within easy reach for a day trip are Pisa, Volterra, Lucca, Arezzo, Cortona and the Val d’Orcia, as well as the beach towns of Castiglioncello, Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi. The Cinque Terre are not far away.
.
We are next to Greve--a lively market town with every convenience. In the morning, the freshly made brioche are still warm. Find your favorite butcher who will prepare custom dishes from their own livestock. After a day's activities, we often have an apertif or enjoy dinner on a terrace overlooking the famous main square watching the children playing in the square.. The open air market is Saturday morning in Greve and Sunday morning in nearby Panzano.

Regular bus service to Florence is available, with a stop less than a mile from the property. For those who prefer to drive, a scenic ride of about 30 minutes brings you to Porta Romana on the Florentine Oltrarno, where daily parking is available. Here you will find Renaissance churches with celebrated paintings, lively piazzas, great restaurants and sweeping views of the city. Cross one of Florences historic bridges and you are in the centro with one of the greatest concentrations of artistic works in the world.

What makes this property unique

It feels as if you've stepped into a Renaissance painting. There is a special light. The photos do not do it justice. The light shining in the house. The giant oak shading the dining terrace. The peacefulness of the olive grove. The views from the pool. And the surprise when a fox, hare, pheasant or even wild boar crosses your path.

The property is commodious and sleeps a large group but offers many comfortable corners and niches in the house and garden for reading, writing, yoga, listening to music or a massage. Many of the furnishings and paintings come from the owners' family and have been passed on through the generations.

Importantly, the location is extraordinarily convenient for touring not only Tuscany but also traveling to other Italian cities. We are close to both the high speed trains that connect Florence to Rome (1.5 hours), Bologna ( 30 minutes), Milan (1hr 40 minutes) and near the main expressway--the A1--that connects Rome-Florence-Bologna-Milan. The area is well served by airports at Florence, Bologna-with direct train from the airport to the train station and Pisa. Thus you may be in the heart of Chianti and the Renaissance but are not far by train from ancient Rome or medieval Bologna.
