Secluded Stonington, Maine cottage gem with Rockefeller view of Penobscot Bay

********* COTTAGE IS BOOKED FOR 2024 SEASON AS OF 12-12-23.
I WILL UPDATE THIS SPACE TO POST ANY VACANCIES THAT MAY OCCUR *******
Twin Boulders sits on a bluff with a panoramic, bold water view of the Deer Isle Thorofare meandering through islands (such as Isle au Haut, Mark Island, Andrews Island) dotting the landscape. Built in 1922 (renovated 2008) and owned by one family since 1936, the cottage is only 50 feet from the bay/ocean (!) and surrounded by 2.2 acres of spruce and pine forest. Driveway to cottage, Firelane 79, off Sand Beach Rd., is 1/2 mile long. Sitting on the deck and taking in the sounds (lobster boats, birds, fog horn, tide), smells (ocean, pines) and sights (skyline of ocean, islands, granite bluffs, schooners, Maine-blue sky, sunsets, dolphins, seals, eagles) is an awesome experience. The living room, dining room, and 2 (of 3) bedrooms each have sliding glass doors providing great views and easy access outside. Living room features large fireplace for warmth on cold summer nights. Sand Beach is within walking distance. Grocery store (Burnt Cove Market) and town of Stonington is nearby. The cottage itself is very comfortable and attractive.

How is Twin Boulders unique?: Named after the two huge boulders on its rocky shore, Twin Boulders is a unique and remarkable cottage both for its design (by architect William McHenry) and location (one of Maine’s most scenic coast-lines). Step outside on the wraparound deck and you'll be transported to the quintessential Maine experience. Facing south, you see Mark Island with its lighthouse and hear its fog horn. A little further south, marked by a ringing buoy is the ocean. Between these two markers is the Deer Island Thorofare, the main shipping lane (3-masted schooners sail by regularly) in the Penobscot Bay area connecting Camden and Bar Harbor through Stonington harbor. The cottage is right on the water, perched high on granite ledges. Sit on the deck or get even closer to the water’s edge and watch the tide pound the rocks, feel the wind, examine the sky's changing colors (so vibrant!), see the sea-faring birds (bald eagles, osprey, ducks, loons), porpoises, and seals.

The Maine coastline is mostly rocky but there are some beaches. One of them, Sand Beach, is a short distance from the cottage. (Some the the scenes in The Man without a Face, starring Mel Gibson, were filmed at this lovely cove.) A visit to the town is fun. There are shops, art galleries, a museum, restaurants, a performing arts center (The Opera House), and a busy harbor where you can watch lobster boats come in at the public dock. You can purchase lobsters at the lobster co-op. If you feel like hiking, there are trails at 12 nature preserves on the island. Visit the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, an international craft school. Off island, nearby towns to explore include Blue Hill, Brooklin and Castine.

Directions from town: When Main Street dead ends, turn right, and then make left at first stop sign. Go left. This is Sand Beach Rd. After about 2 miles look for turnoff for driveway on your left at Walker Point Rd. (also designated Firelane 79). Mailbox name is Dr. LeRoy Walker. Go on the driveway until it seems to end at a clearing where you will see a white house. This is not Twin Boulders. You have to turn right and follow the driveway (west) a little further to a fork. Bear left. A little sign on a tree is marked "46". You have arrived at our cottage.

Beautiful tranquility
Absolutely beautiful, peaceful and quiet. Just staring out at the water, listening to the lighthouse and lobster boats. Reading a good book, wonderful conversations and having fabulous seafood dinners - can it be any better????

Best part of our vacation was the house!
Deer isle was beautiful, and the best part of our stay was Twin Boulders cabin. On two different days we didn’t even leave the property, just enjoyed the view from the deck. The property is very private and convenient to Stonington village. Saw more from the deck and windows than we did from the boat tour we took! Deer, snowshoe hare, Mink diving for their breakfast and playing in the rocks, seals, giant schools of flashing fish jumping and swirling between the rocks, porpoise, not to mention observing lobster traps being checked and schooners and sailboats go by. Walked to sand beach almost every day, best beach on deer isle. And the house had everything we needed and more. The upstairs bedroom with second story balcony is absolutely beautiful, all the beds were very comfortable and clean. We baked muffins, boiled lobsters, and grilled steak on the propane grill. Five stars and more!!!! Might not want to stay here with a toddler, the deck is open to the rocks and ocean below, they would have to be watched very closely. Property manager was very helpful and responded quickly to all my emails.

The best 2 weeks of the summer
Again, Twin Boulders was everything we knew it to be: The quiet, the surroundings, the bay, the stars at night, the comfort and cozyness. It is so amazingly beautiful and peaceful

Wonderful Place!
We had another incredible stay here this year. The views are amazing, and the house was equipped with everything we needed. We had a hard time leaving the property during our stay because we enjoyed the views and house so much. We saw lobster boats in the morning, watched wildlife, spent time seeing the sunsets and moonrises, listened to the fog horn, and more. This property is a very special place.

Peaceful retreat
Just the perfect place to be during these difficult times. The sounds of the bay, the calming sound from the Lighthouse and the lobster boats all make this perfect .

Million-dollar views
This is a beautiful cabin/house right on the water, minutes from Stonington. Wonderful porch overlooking water. Lots of wildlife around. House has been tastefully remodeled relatively recently. Wonderful stay! Just what we wanted out of a Maine vacation.

Heaven on Earth
Stonington is one of the most incredible places in Maine; but what made our trip memorable was our stay at Twin Boulders. This cozy cottage has been remolded for modern comforts; but retains the charm of old world New England. The views are majestic; and the location is situated close to town and amenities. You see the moon rise and the sunset. The house is situated blocks from Sand Beach. This was one of the best vacations we ever had; and the Walker family were great hosts.

Truly a gem!
Twin Boulders is the perfect cottage on the coast of Maine! The cottage itself is accurately displayed in the pictures, is very comfortable, and has everything you need for a great vacation. The location is both private and close to the beach and town. The view is breathtaking! We have visited the area for over 20 years and never tire of the view. This year we saw eagles, loads of seals, loons, and porpoises... without leaving the deck. If you can tear yourself away from the cottage, there are some nice hikes on the island. We also took a boat trip out to Seal Island to see the puffins. Our favorite meals are at the cottage... be it lobster or grilling out... because you are assured the best seat on the island and you won’t miss the fabulous sunsets! I could go on and on. Twin Boulders is a dream... can’t wait to return.

Exceptional!
The cottage is clean, nicely furnished, and comfortable. The ocean views are stunning! A variety of islands near and far add to the interest. We passed time watching lobstermen, sailing vessels, and foraging seals that pass close by. If you forget for a moment that you are near the ocean, the foghorn on Marks Island will remind you!

A Quiet Peaceful Haven
One of the natural wonders of Maine - right out the front window. Been going here for many years and wouldn't want to go anywhere else! Good location away from it all - and you get 'free' lighthouse views complete with foghorn :-)

Paradise
Vacationing at Twin Boulders is a perfect "coast of Maine" experience. My husband and I recently enjoyed our 2nd visit in two years and look forward to returning next year. The cottage includes every detail stated in the description – the owners have done an exceptional job of capturing in photos the multiple assets of this cottage and its pristine location - but nothing beats being there. While we do visit both of the nearby small towns, Stonington and Deer Isle, and we often kayak various inlets, we find that invariably it is to the cottage we are eager to return. We never tire of all it provides - the views, the sea life, the home itself - and all with great peace and quiet. In our experience, as long-time Maine renters, Twin Boulders is unmatched and we feel quite fortunate to have found it.
