About this property

Ultimate Lassen House! Cedar Hot Tub! Private Trout Stream! 20 Acres of Woods!

Jackalope Acres, our family mountain/forest home, awaits you only 15 minutes from Mt. Lassen National Park in the heart of some the most gorgeous, unspoiled hiking and fishing country in California--or the world! Read our 5 Star Reviews!

Stunning 5-bedroom, 4-bath log house on 20 acres of forest and meadowland, in mountains near Mt. Lassen National Park--and multiple other amazing destinations.

The property is set at 4200 feet elevation with nearly a half mile of historic North Battle Creek running through the backyard, restored to sylvan condition and populated by brown and rainbow trout, some up to one pound.

Jackalope Acres isn't just a place to stay--it's a place to create memories! A family resort! Or a couples get away! With amenities available nowhere else in the area.

Our custom Alaskan cedar hot tub, sunken into the large wrap around deck, is the perfect place to start the day watching the song birds and hummingbirds at the feeders or end it with a cocktail or a glass of wine. We also have a large sunken firepit perfect for the cool evening weather.

North Battle Creek is an incredible fishing experience with curves, riffles, deep pools and a substantial trout population. Catch and release. Barbless hooks! Try a large green woolie bugger or match the hatch when the insects are coming up in the warm weather.

Jackalope Acres has extensive trails throughout the grounds for walking, (and in winter) snow shoeing, or cross country skiing. There are multiple evergreen species, black oak, plus meadows with native grasses and flowers.

You'll see deer, foxes, dove, quail, blue heron, hawks, and even wild turkeys. Bring a basket and enjoy a picnic at the tables by creek.

Use our canoe or our kayaks at no additional charge on nearby Lake McCumber, also known for it's bald eagles, and osprey. Fishing isn't the reason to go there, but if you do want to try go the area to try is the only deep part of the lake in front of the dam.

Play croquet, badminton ,or volley ball on the grass lawn. Throw horseshoes in the firepit. Or throw the footballs, frisbees, or play catch with our balls and gloves. We have all those for you. One man's and one woman's mountain bike--and miles of roads. World class indoor outdoor ping pong table!

In winter, we have 4 sets of snow shoes for use at the acres or for Mt Lassen Park. There is a sledding hill on the property kids love. Or take our sleds up to Eskimo Hill where the locals go! Or just watch the leaves and the snow fall from the hot tub! In addition, we are 90 minutes from Mt. Shasta winter downhill skiing and snowboarding!

We love dogs and are willing to accommodate them. There is an additional $100 fee per dog as well as some doggie house rules. If you decide to book that is all explained in the rental agreement. NO EXCEPTIONS on the dog rates!

Bedrooms include two master suites, one in main house and the second in a gorgeous open loft, each with individual attached baths. Main house has 2 additional upstairs bedrooms (one with additional loft bed) and shared bath. Downstairs bedroom has its own hall bath. Perfect for 5 individuals or 5 couples, but with additional futon sofas in master suites, the house can sleep 16.

Gorgeous, eclectic interior lighting and furnishings. Original art and photography throughout house.

Cook gourmet meals in our fully equipped kitchen with quartz counter tops and state-of-the-art appliances. Six-burner cast iron gas stove, conventional, convection and microwave ovens, Cusinart, blender, coffee maker, ice cream maker, and extra refrigerator and freezer in garage. We provide the spices, condiments, napkins, paper towels, etc!

Entertain in the open living room/dining area with state of art iphone and laptop compatible media stereo. Relax in the separate sitting area in front of the Vermont Castings fireplace. Spin the fireplace sofa around to create seating area for a larger group.
In summer, bring the outdoors in: living and dining area also open to deck through 2 sets of sliding doors, with outdoor dining tables and lounge chairs. Cook on the propane grill with a gorgeous custom made prep table.

There is a sunken firepit close to the house for evening camp fires, marshmallows and smores!

Enjoy your favorite sports events in the media room with 50' plasma flat screen, satellite TV package, including TennisChannel, Bose surround sound, Blue Ray DVD, game table and bar.
Wireless Internet throughout the house.

Fully automatic backup generator power for entire house and all appliances. Laundry room. Caretaker and cleaning service is available in the neighborhood.

This incredible, one of a kind estate is only 15 minutes from Mt. Lassen National Volcanic Park, an untrafficked jewel for both winter and summer.

Jackalope Acres is 11 miles from Shingletown, and 35 miles from Downtown Redding. It's 240 miles northeast San Francisco--a four hour drive--and only 35 minutes from Redding airport. Special, spectacular backroads driving directions available!

Jackolope Acres is also only 30 miles from world famous trout fishery Hat Creek.

Dozens of other world class rivers, streams, lakes, and state parks are all within 1 hour or less. World class private fishing booking are available through Fly Shop in Redding.

The house is also only 1/2 hour from the Manton Valley winery district with small wineries, a wide range of varietals and friendly, vintner staffed tasting rooms.

Great local burgers and a good deli are also available nearby.

The area is unspoiled, uncrowded, and free from the traffic and people jams of so many other California “outdoor” destinations such as Yosemite or Lake Tahoe.

Sun Oaks Racquet Club which is 35 minutes away allows day passes for tennis, swimming, and/or to use their complete fitness facility. More detailed, custom activity suggestions in owner created guidebook at house.

Truly a place to get away, relax, explore, and entertain. Great in all four seasons. Warm summer temperatures with cool nights and gorgeous, moderate winter snows.

Great place for weekend getaway!
We had great time at this cabin. House is quite large, clean and well maintained. We enjoyed privacy of 20 acres. It snowed heavily on Saturday and turned property into winter wonderland! Would gladly return next year!

Wonderful New Years cozy stay for 10 people
My sister and I brought our husbands and 6 teenagers (ages 16-20) for a wonderful stay at this gorgeous house. Our kids were very impressed at the size and amenities, and my sister and I enjoyed the cozy ease of entertaining. There were some issues with the heating which the owners took care of quickly. This is a very well appointed house - we hope to return!

Wonderful property!
Three generations stayed over a long weekend at this property and had a wonderful time! The owner and property managers were very accessible. There was plenty of space inside the home for everyone. Our kids fished in the stream, made s'mores in the fire pit, and just ran around the grounds exploring. The kitchen is exceptionally well stocked. We will definitely keep this property in mind for future travels! Thank you, Jon, for opening your home to us so we could spend time making memories.

Family gathering
We had a wonderful time at Jackalope Acres. The place is awesome. Everything is wood. Families had a very relaxing community time. It was like in a different time and space. Management was very helpful in greeting and explaining features. A bit a a drive from Redding but worth it once your there. We went into Redding every day for Wedding activities. Cabin life is the best. Activities included Kayaking, canoe, biking, hot tub and fire pit.

Excellent Stay at Lassen
Our family of 6 thoroughly enjoyed our time at this house. Our host, Erik was knowledgeable and accommodating and oriented us very nicely upon our arrival. This house was fully stocked with no need to bring toiletries or kitchen spices, etc. The welcome booklet, although long, was very informative. We enjoyed our days at Lassen Nat'l Park and our evenings lounging at the house, on the deck, at the creek, or in the hot tub. There was a ton of room and plenty to do. We would have spent a little more time outside if there hadn't been many bees. Erik warned us well about the yellow jackets around the property so we were careful and a little timid. There were a few on the deck (4-6), especially when we were cooking, but I imagine this is to be expected. No way to eat outside, though, we enjoyed after dinner drinks on the deck.

Annual Family Retreat
For a number of years we have taken our kids and grandkids to interesting places for a family retreat. This was the best. It was great that the kids could just run down to the creek, or ride their bikes around, or play ball on the grass. Some major creek restoration is planned for this fall that will make the creek even more inviting. We made good use of the well appointed kitchen. Homemade ice cream-yum, although we burned our brownies in an unfamiliar oven. S'mores at the fire pit was fun. One minor downside was the lack of kitchen cabinet space for storing our own food items. Appreciated the wifi--we are a plugged in family. We discovered it can't handle Netflix streaming video, but works well for normal browsing and email. Loved hiking in Lassen and the surrounding area. Three of us summited Lassen peak. We all enjoyed the kayaks and canoe at McCumber reservoir, although it would be nicer if PGE would clear it of all the aquatic weeds that seem to be taking over. I expect a request from the family to return at some future time.

Enjoyed our stay very much.
Erik , the property manager, was very personable and helpful. He answered our texts promptly. We loved the house and property. Our teens played ping pong all the time and the adults enjoyed lounging on the deck and wandering the property. We opened the windows at night and closed up the house during the day. Even though the temps were 85 - 90 early July, 2018, we did not need air-conditioning. There are lots of games suitable for family play. If it weren't for the World Cup, we probably wouldn't have even turned on the TV. We loaded one of the kayaks into our Honda minivan and used the house canoe to paddle around lake McCumber one day. I was disappointed in the fishing. The lake is shallow and was full of vegetation. The only place to fish was at the dam floating power bait about 4ft off the bottom. I had better luck in Lassen park at lake Manzanita. While the family hiked, son and I fished. Got a couple hits on a gold panther martin then switched to the smallest black dry fly I had. Landed 2 nice fish (catch and release are the rules and only single barbless hook). We were visited by a ranger who checked for licenses and proper hooks. Over all had a great time.

Fully Equipped In Every Way - Private Accommodations For Our Group of 12
Our group takes a yearly trip to a destination within a days drive of our Reno home. Our experience this year at Jackalope Acres was as good or better than recent trips to Zion, Yosemite, Mendocino, Mammoth Lakes, and Bend, OR. John is a friendly, enthusiastic, responsive, helpful host both before, during, and after our stay. His manager Erik provides an informative tour as you check in. We hiked Lassen Peak and Cinder Cone. I recommend both. Lasting experience and memories. And our 20 mile drive to Manton Valley for some wine tasting was an incredible experience! If you go take the time to arrange a visit to Mount Tehama Winery. The owner Alain will provide wine, cheese, and entertainment. You're tasting wine from barrels and vats and any purchases made are bottled as you wait and watch. During our five day stay I'm so glad we had one "free day". I encourage you to walk around the property. You will probably encounter several deer. And the trout stream has been restored to it's aesthetic beauty and a perfect habitat for the many trout. We played croquet on the huge lawn, had two cornhole games going on the huge wrap around deck, and enjoyed the hot tub. That night we had a fire in the firepit and of course had s'mores. Just bring your fixins, the wood, igniter, and marshmellow roasting sticks are all provided. That's a perfect example of how well equipped the property is anticipating all your needs. There are five bedrooms - one with two singles which nicely accommodated a father and daughter. One BR has a little loft with a bed and two have a futon or two to offer more options. One single guy in our group slept in the Media Room. That worked out very well. He had plenty of privacy. The two master suites both have a master bath plus there are two more baths with showers. Very convenient for our large group of 12. The dining room table extended to seat all 12 of us! Rarely can we all eat at one table. You won't be disappointed! In fact your expectations will be exceeded in many ways!

Our stay was like a dream!
What a wonderful house! First off, it feels huge, there's a lot of square footage. There was plenty of room for the 18 of us. The kitchen was large and had a prep area which came in handy, and as suggested by Doreen who greeted us, we used the shelving in the kitchen hallway for our dry foods and snacks. There are so many wonderful aspects about the house, our favorite was "the meadow" area (we called it) where we set up a volleyball net (which they provided) and played bat mitten (which they also provided) and beach volleyball (we brought the beach ball & they had a volleyball). There are a couple benches out there for those who just wanted to watch. THE FIREPIT! The fire pit was clutch. There was wood for burning and there were metal skewers we used for cooking sausages and hotdogs (& SMORES!). There are little stumps around the fire pit to sit on too! We spent our time here singing freely around the fire under the stars while some of us played banjos and guitars. We loved the creek, so cold & clear! Some of us waded through it, it's not very wide, and about 4 feet deep in the deepest parts. There are also picnic tables and benches along the path so you can stop and just sit for a while and listen. :) Some other comments and likes: Plenty of towels! tons of condiments and spices fireplace was a nice touch and did get used even though our visit was during the summer (August) great open living area for large group hang outs the house is even better looking than the pictures Cons: There really aren't any, I'm searching here for one... the only thing I can think of was that my husband and I had a hard time figuring out how to work the kitchen appliances (a little more high-tech than the average dishwasher, oven, and microwave) Tips: Make sure you bring food, you won't want to do food runs very often, the town is not close by. There is plenty of room in the kitchen, indoor and outdoor fridge for food and beverage. Bring bug spray! Lots of land = lots of bugs! It can be hard to find and service is patchy, so talk to the owner a few days before your trip and they'll give you the lowdown on how to get there beforehand. It was hot during the day and chilly at night so bring warm clothes for night. Thank you for our wonderful stay!

Wonderful House
This is a great house with a wonderful (freezing) creek on the property. The nearby lake is a little murky so we drove over to lake Manzanita in Lassen Park a couple of times to go swimming and walk around the lake. It's a 25 minute drive.

About the host

Host profile image
We are urban San Franciscans who always dreamed of having a property where we could get back to nature. We grew up fishing, hiking and exploring, and we can truly say we have found the perfect escape from our busy life in the city. It is a great pleasure to share our home with friends, family and guests.

Why they chose this property

Shingletown is a quaint community, just a few miles from Lassen National Park and surrounded by pristine lakes, streams and abundant hiking. We fell in love with the property's 20 acres which are home to deer, jack rabbits and countless species of birds. Even in summer, Shingletown is never crowded. It feels remote, but it is only 45 minutes away from the town of Redding which has all the resources you might want and a great historic steakhouse named Jack's.

What makes this property unique

Looking at the skies from the backyard, you will be amazed to see so many stars!!!!
