About this property

A stone lodge set in the grounds of an old farmhouse in the Charente countryside

L'oume Lodge is a beautiful retreat in 12 acres of orchards and meadows, surrounded by the picturesque countryside. The Lodge is situated on the grounds of a 200-year-old Charentaise farmhouse and boasts a private terrace, garden, and BBQ area for guests to enjoy, as well as a private gated entrance and parking area for multiple cars.

The highlight of the Lodge is the 12x6m heated swimming pool with a summer kitchen, built-in BBQ and wisteria-covered eating area. The depth is 1.25m throughout and there is a shallow side pool perfect for toddlers. The pool is shared with one other gite on the property, but there are plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas around the pool and the surrounding garden for guests to have their own space. The expansive garden and meadow offer a peaceful sanctuary where guests can relax and enjoy the breathtaking views and natural wildlife.

PLEASE NOTE: This year the pool is exclusive to L'oume Lodge as we are currently getting another gite ready for next year.

The lodge features an open-plan living room, dining area, and kitchen equipped with various coffee-making facilities and all the cooking equipment and utensils you may need, and comprises two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a bunk bed and a single bed, as well as a double sofa bed in the living area. There's a spacious bathroom with a jack-and-jill style layout, featuring a bathtub and a shower, and a separate toilet located in the hallway.

The property is on the edge of a small village, located 30 minutes north of Angouleme. The town of Mansle, with all the facilities, is only a seven-minute drive away and there is a local bar/tabac in the village selling some basics.

There's plenty of space for guests to store their bikes or kayaks and we have 2 Schwinn cruisers that guests are welcome to use to explore the local area. There will also be binoculars and a guide of local birds in the lodge for your use as well as a guide to all the local bric a bracs and brocantes on in the local area this year.

About the host

Hosted by Natalie

Host profile image
We are a family of 4 from Oxford in the UK. We recently moved to the Charente and bought a traditional Charentaise farmhouse with nearly 12 acres to renovate and turn into a gite business.

The gites consist of a 2 bedroom lodge which we have already completed and a larger gite which is situated in the barns attached to the main house. This space has already been converted into offices but we plan to convert them into a comfortable gite which can host two families.

I'm a printed textile designer and I love interior design so this is a very exciting venture for me! I also love cooking, painting and gardening. The gardens at Les Champ's De L'oume already have many fruit and truffle trees as well as an abundance of honeysuckle, jasmine and hibiscus but we plan to add much more as well as a vegetable garden and, at some point, chickens and possibly some goats for guests to enjoy!

Why they chose this property

The Charente offers great weather, beautiful countryside filled with sunflowers and maize, picturesque villages with historical chateau and churches and the Charetne river offers some great kayaking, canoing and paddle boarding as well as some safe swiming spots.

There's a small tabac/bar in the village and a van that comes around during the summer season selling basics and Mansle, the nearest town with all the facilities, is only a 7 minute drive away.

Many kayak and paddleboard centres are nearby, which is a great way to explore the Charente River and there are many weekly markets and bric a brac and brocantes on in the surrounding area throughout the year.

We are situated 30 minutes away from Angouleme, the capital of the Charente, with its illustrated buildings and links to the world of comic books, its beautiful views over the river and valley below and the old town with its indoor market and lively bars and restaurants.

Some lovely spots on the river have a beach and lifeguard which is perfect for the kids and La Vallée Des Singes (the Valley of the Monkeys) is a 45-minute drive.

You can also take a trip to Cognac with it's vineyard and distilleries, which hosts many festivals during the summer months and is well known for its blues passion festival in July.

What makes this property unique

Our property is at the edge of a small village overlooking the countryside and is set in nearly 12 acres of orchard and meadow. With many fruit trees and perfumed flowers, there's an abundance of wildlife to enjoy as well as the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.

The large swimming pool is ideally positioned to take in these views and has all the facilities you need to relax and unwind including a newly decoated pool house/summer kitchen with a sink, fridge, toilet and changing room as well as a large table just outside for dining with a wisteria covered pergola.

The stylishly decorated stone lodge, formally the piggery, benefits from lots of natural light and feels spacious and open but also cosy and comfortable. It's positioned across the courtyard from the main house through a gated arch and benefits from having it's own terrace, garden, car park and seperate gated entrance. it's the perfect base for a relaxing holiday and exploring the surrounding area!
