The Georgian resides in the exclusive 'Glacial Terrace' locals-only private enclave accessible only by Guests of The Georgian and family members of nearby estate cottages. The area is one of the most sought after amongst the affluent who enjoy the absolutely stunning sunsets and beautiful recreation activities of the North Channel. It is a 5 min drive into the heart of Tobermory village. Tobermory is a harbour village on the Bruce Peninsula in the province of Ontario. Just southeast, Bruce Peninsula National Park is known for the Bruce Trail footpath on the craggy Niagara Escarpment, and the Grotto, a wave-carved cave in Georgian Bay. The village lies next to Fathom Five National Marine Park, which is home to the Flowerpot Island sea stacks, 19th-century lighthouses and multiple shipwreck dive sites.

Native Land Acknowledgment
We acknowledge the traditional Territory of the Anishinabek Nation: The People of the Three Fires known as Ojibway Odawa and Pottawatomie Nations. And further give thanks to the Chippewas of Saugeen, and the Chippewas of Nawash, now known as the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, as the traditional keepers of this land.

Have you ever wondered about why the waters of Georgian Bay can appear to take on a beautiful aqua colour? It's a product of light refracting through calcite in the water.
Calcite comes from the dolostone that makes up the escarpment. Rainfall events (rain is naturally slightly acidic) or water agitating surrounding rocks can cause calcium carbonate to leech from the stone or other calcium-rich compounds, such as marl, and crystallize in the lake water, becoming calcite. These crystals double-refract the light (also called birefringence), creating the beautiful hue that our eyes see.
This is the second post of a series about the geology of the Niagara Escarpment.

"One of the most beautiful cottages I have ever stayed at. Just unreal." - Melanie B. 2022

The cottage is beautifully re-designed and is located on a picturesque view of the waterside. It is private & spacious and has the rustic, vintage feel of a traditional Canadian lodge, has a fully equipped kitchen with premium appliances, 4-bedrooms & 2 baths, and is just a short drive to great restaurants and shops in Tobermory. The area is also renowned for its natural "flowerpot" rock pillars, caves, historic light station and rare plants. Most of the visitors take cruise line boat tours from the town of Tobermory to spend quality time on the island hiking the trails, viewing the scenery, picnicking or swimming.

A vehicle is required to travel on inland roads.
A 10-15' max. sailboat can dock on the water's edge, or at the marina in Tobermory.

We had a perfectly fine time. Comfortable. Great view. Little breezy for the kayak but, hey, watcha gonna do. One small thing. Kids wanted to watch a movie but the dvd player was frozen shut. After ten minutes I gave up and the kids had another thing going on by then so nothing was lost. Still, its worth looking into. The hot tub was great for a cool evening but when the kids started playing with the buttons it would eventually get cranky and stop responding. Found the main power which set it up right again, but kids being kids they did it once more. Nonetheless we had a great time.

Pros/Cons

Pros: Great location on the peninsula. Beautiful sunsets, great kayaking, close to town. Cons: In desperate need of repair. Broken window cranks, broken or missing closet doors, holes in bathroom walls, sliding doors stuck/difficult to open. Unkept property. Construction debris in back yard, old outdoor cushions laying on ground, yard covered (and I do mean covered) in goose poop. Low quality and/or missing amenities. Thin and stained towels, only 1 garbage bag, soap dispensers that (I believe) were diluted with water, no dishcloths (just 1 tiny sponge). Unclean areas inside. Bugs in door tracks and window sills that could easily be vacuumed up, sticky floors, entire home in need of a good scrub down. With a little love, the property has the potential of being an absolute winner. As is, I’d rate it mediocre at best. Would not book again unless property is properly cared for.
