About this property

Back in 2026! Beautiful 1800's Waterfront Farmhouse with Guesthouse and Barn

** We are doing some renovations this summer and will be back for next summer!

A beautiful 150-year old rustic saltwater farm surrounded by acres and acres of fields and woods with thousands of feet of shorefront on a tranquil cove.

The perfect setting to go kayaking and canoeing for an active day on the water, to go bicycling and explore the island or Vinalhaven town, to go hiking, or to go swimming in either the salt water or nearby fresh water granite quarries (one two miles away the other four miles distant). You may also want to swim in the warm (for coastal Maine) saltwater cove behind the house, pick berries, or explore the woods on the nearby trails.

Or else just relax on the back porch with a book and a view over the wildflowers and cove and watch the ospreys diving for fish.

There is a 5 BR main house with 3 baths, a guesthouse with 1 BR and a 6-bed bunkroom that kids love.

There is also large barn attached to the guesthouse that is a great setting for a rainy day kids activities such as ping-pong, painting, and there's a big swing hanging off the rafters.

The main house has a full kitchen with equipment for lobster, pies or anything else you might want to create from the delicious local seafood, produce and berries. A huge dining room has a table that expands to seat all of your extended family and gets great views of the cove and fields. A cozy living room is a great place to read or for a late night board game. A large deck off the main house overlooks the back lawn, fields, and cove. There is a hammock to put between two trees just off the back lawn.

There is a master bedroom with king size bed and bathroom downstairs. Upstairs features 2 full bathrooms with and 2 bedrooms with queen-sized beds, 1 room with twin singles, and 1 room with a single bed. A back staircase allows privacy between the 'North' and 'South' upstairs rooms.

The guesthouse features a spacious sitting/dining area with high ceilings with great views over the fields and cove. There's a full kitchen with great views over the fields and cove. There is 1 BR with a queen-sized bed and a great bunk-room with 3 double bunk beds.

The guesthouse also has a large deck with lovely views and an outdoor shower.

There are 2 kayaks, 1 paddle-board, 1 canoe and bicycles available for use by renters
A trail north, past the old apple trees and through the woods leads to nice views out winter harbor towards Deer Isle.

Starlink wifi.

Weekly rentals, Saturday to Saturday.

Perfect place for an organized retreat.

I ran a Yoga+Photo Retreat at Sparrow Farm and it was the ideal place for a large group. We were all strangers and still the accommodations were perfect. The location is beautiful and the host was easy to reach leading up to our stay. The caretaker checked in to make sure we had what we needed. And the house is very well stocked with what you'll need to during your stay.

Large family reunion dream location

We had such a wonderful time being all together in a very accommodating space for a large family. We had everything every age could want do: a swing, bicycles, kayaks and water tube and so much more.

Gorgeous!

This was our second time visiting vinalhaven, and first time in this house. It was better than we all thought! Watching my kids play in the yard as the sun was going down was amazing! Sitting while drinking our morning coffee while watching the osprey, bald eagles and loons fly around us. And listening to the sand

Family vacation

The property is beautiful with views and a lot of privacy. The facilities definitely sleep as many as stated. The barn offers entertainment options for all ages. Vinalhaven has a great, full service, grocery store. I mention this because dining out options are limited. Overall a great experience!

A wonderful week

8 adults. 2 children. One big, rustic farmhouse; a barn with bunk beds, a swing hung from the rafters and a ping-pong table; acres and acres of fields and woods and a tranquil cove. It was our kind of place. Our time was filled with solving a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle, collecting shoreline shells and other treasures, picking wild blueberries, reading, eating fresh caught lobsters, watching birds, improving our foraging skills, cheering for 4th-of-July-parade floats, riding bikes, and swimming in the cool, clear waters of abandoned quarries.

Beyond our expectations! Wonderful place to reconnect with family.

The photo does not capture the beauty of this location. The other side of the house looks out on an expansive meadow with sweeping unobstructed views to the water. Every room in the main house has its charm, views and comfort. The barn apartment has beautiful views and its own deck. We spent many happy family hours playing ping pong, whiffle ball and swinging in the barn with our grandchildren. The island offers diverse activities including great hiking trails, swimming in the quarry, biking, croquet and kayak and canoeing from the house. Our family with ages 8-74 were never bored. The kitchen was well equipped and the island grocery store was more than adequate. The house is well supplied with books and games. Bill, the caretaker, is a great resource and is willing to answer any questions. He is also the president of the local historical society and gave us a tour of the museum. The owners have done a wonderful job in preserving and protecting the integrity of the house and land. We had a great time and look forward to a return visit.

We absolutely loved the place. Beautiful sunsets on back deck. The barn was fun to play ping pong in. Had everything we needed, except the internet never worked.

Perfect Maine getaway

Pleasant River Farm is absolutely magical in every way, from the private cove, to the kayaks/canoe/SUP, to the winding trail through the spruce and fir woodlands that extend the property — not to mention the preserves and quarries that dot the island for even more hiking/swimming/idyllic landscapes. Add to that bikes and ping-pong and croquet, and you will remember this vacation for years to come. Vinalhaven is a very special island. Our family of four could have stayed the whole summer.

Wonderful family vacation!

Our group of 14 including two young kids had a wonderful time visiting Vinalhaven and the Sparrow Farm! The views from the property were breathtaking. The pictures do not do it justice. The property had plenty of space for everyone, everything we needed, and a wonderful caretaker, Randy. The barn was a big hit for both the kids and adults. We loved the kayaks, canoe, and paddleboard. Some of the highlights were swimming and exploring the tidal cove and quarries, biking around the island, renting a boat for a day trip to Stonington, and golfing in North Haven. We will cherish our memories from this trip. Thank you for sharing this wonderful property with us!

Beautiful stay for large groups with kids

The house is rustic but so spacious. We had everything we needed for our daily life. We had to look around a little for something, but it's fine for a traveler who isn't looking for concierge service. Any housing quirks are completely cancelled out by this idyllic location on the water. The sense of privacy and natural beauty greeted us all day. There was plenty of room to play soccer matches and lounge around in the afternoon reading, eating and playing in the sun. It's a little bit windy, but very welcome in summertime. We biked, ran, and walked. There were multiple quarries to swim in on the island, and many secluded coves to explore. Thank you for some amazing memorries!!

Magical Location

We loved our time at the Sparrow farm enjoying all of the great sights and experiences of Vinalhaven. The house and barn were very accommodating of our two families with seven children each and they are filled with personal touches and Maine charm. We loved having the use of kayaks and the canoe for exploring Vinal Cove and saw seals, bald eagles and other water fowl. The farm has expansive and private grounds.

beautiful place to stay if you have ferry reservations!

this is a great property and so serene and our family had a great time and very relaxing. the house is outfitted well and the island is easy to get around. The problem is not getting on the island, its getting off the island. the locals have a system where they can buy line numbers and the vacationers are left to fend for them selves. took us most of the day to get off. If you are not renting peak season no problem, but we had five cars to get off the island and it was a real hassle. Its probably the reason its so quiet! but it was worth it despite the problem.

Unique Vinalhaven Farmhouse

Our extended family of 12 thoroughly enjoyed this gorgeous place! We appreciated traveling off the beaten path; it requires some planning and legwork to learn the ferry system (the Rockland ferry office workers were very helpful and getting reservations in advance worked well). We loved relaxing together, exploring Vinalhaven, eating lobster, birdwatching, and enjoying the beautiful view of the water and land. The caretaker was extremely kind and helpful during our stay. The house is comfortable with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms and has incredible history, character, and beauty! The barn was fun for playing ping pong and swinging. We were sad to leave! Thank you so much for sharing your family's incredible place on this neat island.

Perfect for family gathering

This last June, my wife and I, our children and our children’s children, all 20 of us, spent a delightful June week at Pleasant River Farm on Vinalhaven Island, Maine. The property consisted of a large two story farmhouse decorated with numerous wonderful watercolors by the owner. Added to this was an even bigger open barn with swings, ping pong, picnic tables and plenty of space to just play in. At the back of the barn was another living space with a second kitchen, and 2 bedrooms that could sleep eight. Both buildings had large decks to enjoy. We were well taken care of by the amazing caretaker who answered our every question, took us to see fireworks, and helped us get lobster. There was a huge lawn to play games on and a short walk to water for using the available kayak and canoe. We just loved this indoor and outdoor space. Vinalhaven Island itself had numerous hikes to enjoy, an interesting town just two miles from our farmhouse, quarries to swim in and as much lobster as you could ever eat. We’d recommend this stay to anyone and are seriously considering returning for a second visit.

Amazing place

One of the pure gems of the island. Private, lots of surrounding woods and coves to explore. Great swimming. 2 miles to town. Often sunny here when foggy on the ocean coasts. Just come here to experience total relaxation. I've been coming here for years.
