About this property

5 bdrm Victorian, built in 1881-With 21 rooms, on a hill on 4 VERY private acres

In the heart of the scenic Hudson Valley, on 4 VERY private acres, up on hill, lies this masterpiece of Victorian architecture… a grand “painted lady”, overlooking the majestic Hudson River. Built in 1881, this magnificent home was originally a wedding gift, and we are only the second family to reside here. Prior to the house being built, the land was a gift from the King of England. So this literally is a home for a King... or Queen!

Inside you are greeted by a 60’ main foyer. The exquisite decorative woodwork was custom hand carved in Scotland. Mmm… where next? The living/family room has a big TV, so you can enjoy sports or your favorite movie. Or perhaps the music room, with a perfect condition, baby grand piano from 1945. Want to read? The parquet floors in 2 libraries are accentuated by the crystal glass cabinets. And the sun room, is a wonderful place for morning meditation, or to get in your "zone on the treadmill. Each fireplace has hand painted tiles… ranging in Shakespearean scenes to animals and their young.

Hungry? Walk toward the back and the kitchen is electric with 2 ovens that are at a level where you don’t have to bend down to use them. The table and chairs are an example of 60’s décor, which are actually represented in the Smithsonian. If you need storage space during your stay, there are 2 rooms off of the kitchen, which contain a second refrigerator and full size freezer. The washer/dryer are also in a separate room off of the kitchen. Pass through the pantry, with its oversized sink, on your way to the formal dining room… which easily sits 12, and has a ceiling that is an embossed leather type material of fall leaves.

Upstairs are 5 bedrooms. The primary suite leads to a dressing room with vanity mirrors, and in the bathroom, is blue glass, not tile. There is full Wi-Fi and the office has 2 desks… if you must do work during your relaxing stay.

Enjoy afternoon tea or your favorite cocktail on the large front porch, which wraps around to a screened in porch. Or, only footsteps away, take in the scent of fresh pines, the charming, almost fairy like Gazebo.

Locally, there are multiple golf courses, wineries, hiking trails, art galleries including Storm King Art Center, shopping destinations, and outstanding eateries and entertainment, many of which are on the banks of the picturesque river. Explore our nation’s history… George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War, and West Point less than 14 miles away. Finally, only an hour north of NYC, you can take in a Broadway play and be back in the serene quiet of the country that same night.

PLEASE NOTE: There is some historic restoration being done on the outside, and so as not to have any noise intrude on guests, on this very serene and private property, the house will have limited availability during this period.

I grew up here and absolutely love the beautiful scenic Hudson Valley.

Why they chose this property

It's like being at a resort, but it's a private home with nature at its best.

What makes this property unique

So many special items... All the wood paneling was hand carved in Scotland. The fireplace tiles are all custom. The house is actually lined with brick , and the bricks were made on the property in a kiln buried in the ground. The same kitchen furniture is now in the Smithsonian, as representative of the time/style.
As they say, they just don't make them like they used to!
