About this property

Harbour Island, Bahamas, Walk to Gorgeous Pink Sand Beach

This lovely spacious cedar cottage is located on a small, friendly island surrounded by one of the world's most beautiful pink sand beaches and turquoise waters. We built this cottage for our family, and love to share it with friends and beach-lovers. That's why we've made it one of the best lodging deals on Harbour Island.

The beach, only a short walk over the dunes and past a row of gorgeous plantation-style estates, is nearly three miles long. A five minute walk to the calm protected waters on the bay side leads to licensed water sports providers, fishing guides, and gorgeous sunsets to be seen nightly from gourmet restaurants and bars with a water and sky-view. It's also a great place to check out the incredible yachts that pull into the harbor.

Most locals get around in golf carts, and rentals are readily available for your stay.

While the restaurants are top-notch, the cottage has a full kitchen and a new propane grill for those who like to cook. Shop for fresh-caught fish or conch at the daily market. Relax and enjoy your morning coffee or afternoon tea on our deck shaded by century-old banyan trees or in the comfort of our spacious living room with fresh-baked goodies from the local bakery.

The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and attached bath (renovated as of March 2022). A bedroom (with queen bed) and a room with two twins share a bath (also renovated March 2022). A pull-out convertible sofa provides an additional queen bed.

We have a large, fenced yard for kids to play outdoors. The house is nestled between four large banyan trees that provide shade and keep all the rooms cool. There is a powerful AC unit in the living/dining area and a second one in the master bedroom. Ceiling fans are located in all of the bedrooms and the living room.

Please note: This is a NO SMOKING property.

If you like shopping, there are wonderful boutiques in town as well as excellent local shops that carry Bahamian-made goods. No foreign currency worries – the Bahamian dollar is on a par with the U.S. dollar. The local bank has a conveniently located ATM, and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Harbour Island is the best of the Caribbean – small, friendly, laid back, comfortable, warm, and fun. As former supermodel and world traveler Helena Christensen told the Wall Street Journal, Harbour Island is 'a wonderful little island with beautiful beaches, a great restaurant culture and friendly, welcoming atmosphere..'

Wonderful stay in all respects.
This cabin felt very private with the huge banyon trees that provided shade for the house and deck. We enjoyed coming back to the house after the beach and other outings. It met our expectations in all respects. There were some recent updates to the bathrooms. A couple issues remaining from the renovations were addressed quickly and efficiently by the property manager. We would definitely go back! Thank you for a great visit!

Great island-vibe home for family trip
This home worked perfectly for our family trip to Harbour Island. The house is situated conveniently near beaches and stores- very easy walk or golf-cart ride to both. In a great way the house feels like part of the island-vibe--it doesn't feel touristy and fancy, just totally comfortable and relaxing. It's a great base to come home to after a day out in the sun or out to restaurants. We didn't cook at the house so can't comment on the kitchen supplies. We traveled with 2 other families to H.I. and they stayed in other rental. properties. In comparison--our house was bigger and more private: one family's house had fancier decor but was a much smaller space; the other family's house had a bigger outdoor group area where we could all hang out and gather, but they also had an attached unit with other renter/shared space to their house which they didn't know about before renting. We were really happy with Back Banyans. Communications with the owner were really easy and the house manager on the island Alexis was great and responded quickly to any questions. Thanks for the great stay!

Accommodations could't be better!
We loved our stay at Back Banyan. The house was clean and in a great location, close to everything. It had everything we needed and was comfortable in all respects. It is not resort accommodations, but that was not what we were looking for. In fact, I would say it was even better. The house was quaint, great space and a rustic but our entire group would choose to return over any other resorts or places we saw on the Island. The property manager, Alexis was very friendly and immediately available to us whenever we needed her. Highly recommend Back Banyan!!!

HOME (almost)
OK, I had such a hard time with "the Title" line in this review as everything I came up with sounded so cliched. There is nothing clich'ed about Back Banyan House I'm not comfortable in places that feel separated from the culture I'm visiting and I've never liked "beachy": blond Floridian type of condos with way too many shells and generic seascape posters. This house was like living in our own house, with a front and backyard and white picket fence. It is a spacious cabin of well seasoned knotty pine interior and wood floors that would not look strange in The Adirondacks yet sits beautifully here. Some places feel, 'rented' and some not. this is the latter. Not fancy, extremely homey. 3 minute ride in a golf cart gets you the most amazing of beaches. The kitchen is really well suited for actual cooking, which we did quite a bit of as the Covid19 scare (no cases on the island) but restaurants had to close their doors halfway through our stay. Juanita, of Tingum Village , a small hotel across the street became our friend and sometimes provider of information and delicious local rum. Our plan was for a 'reading' vacation'. the comfort of the living area was made for this occupation. The "almost, in the title is that we almost didn't make it back to the States due to flight cancellations. This house was the ideal place to be marooned.

Hidden gem - photos don't do justice!
We stayed for 4 nights at this property. The photos truly do not do any justice to how wonderful this property truly is - we al lcommented sayign we would like to retire in this home!! We were a family of 3 adult siblings, 2 spouses and 2 young children. As soon as we entered the property, we were taken in by the open and airy set up. Plenty of couches, chairs, dining room area chairs, large kitchen - everything was convenient. The kitchen was fully stocked with plenty of pots and pans, utensils, coffee maker, dishware for at least a dozen easily. The unit also has a washer dryer right next to the kitchen. The bedrooms and their setup were perfect. Both bathrooms were arge - the ensuite bathroom was huge. The linen closet was stocked with plenty of extra towels and sheets etc. Onsite Manager, Alexis, was a gem and responded to all our requests in a timely manner, bringing us beach chairs and beach umbrella when asked. The entire island uses only bottled water and Alexis helped by delivering a 5 gallon can of water upon request. Expecting rental units in remote islands to have expensive spices for free is extremely unreasonable (previous reviewer's complaint). The restaurant across from this home. Tinghum Village, are excellent neighbors and took great care of us during power cuts. Renting a golf cart is a must if you have young kids. The beach is a quick 10 mins walk and is absolutely beautiful. Do come prepared with ear plugs as your friendly neighbor, Mr. Rooster, will sing for you starting at 4 AM. Overall, we could not have found a better place to suit our needs.

With a little TLC this place could be great
This house afforded us the opportunity to visit Harbour Island, which was fantastic; it is accurately described as a bargain for this expensive island. However, the house is in need of maintenance and is very minimally stocked for renters. If you're okay with rustic accommodations, this place will be a good fit, but our family left wishing we'd spent a little more to stay in a different house. If you are considering it, we would have benefitted from a stronger warning about the very loud roosters who start crowing in the middle of the night (bring earplugs and a white noise machine!), the lack of any fresh water in the home (the water filter was not functional, so you'll be buying any water to drink or cook with), the poorly stocked kitchen (bring basics like salt and spices), and the lack of grill and outdoor leisure space (there's no place to sit outside and the backyard is ankle deep with dead leaves).

Inexpensive house with a great property manager
This house is not for everyone. However it looks like the pics and it is clean. When all of the other options on the island are 2-3 times this price than if you are willing to forgo a nice and new property this one is a good value. If you need new and modern this simply is not the right property. The location is great and the property manager is very responsive. House is old but clean. Most importantly it has air and comfortable beds. We spent no time in the place and instead enjoyed the island so in our case it was perfect. Roosters wake you up 4-5 Am each day. Drink a lot the night before so you can sleep through them

Lovely central 3 BDR, 2 BA beach bungalow!
We stayed at Back Banyans with family, including 2 couples and a 2 year old. What a perfect setup for a family! The master bedroom and attached bath are quite large, while the other 2 bedrooms are small but comfortable. The great room with large kitchen is the hub of activity. There are lots of restaurants and take-out food places within a couple of blocks. We had a golf cart and it was well worth having in order to visit all the beaches, buy groceries and water and carry all of our baggage. Alexis, the on-island manager, was wonderful and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect weekend getaway!
The house was just right for my husband and me, with room for our children, who will hopefully come next time. Alexis was wonderful and arranged for us to use a charcoal grill so we could cook at the house a few nights. Conveniently located to all the best spots on the island!

Perfect accommodations for family stay!
We can't say enough about the Back Banyans Cottage and our stay on Harbour Island. The house is adorable and has everything you need for a wonderful stay. In particular, for our family, it was great for our one-year-old and five-year-old grandchildren as the interior and exterior allow for safe crawling and playing. We had a golf cart delivered from Michael's, groceries delivered from Bob's, a crib delivered via Alexis, the property manager, and we made arrangements for a babysitter every night through The Coral Sands resort. We will be back!

Wonderful time at the Banyan House
Thank you for a wonderful stay. The island is beautiful, the house well located. We did not rent a golf cart as nothing is more than 20 min walk away. The three bedrooms are of good size, though only the master and living area have AC. Alexis, the property manager was extremely responsive. Thank you!

Too much amazingness to summarize fully. The house is great, with everything you need: kitchen equipment, AC, fast WIFI, lots of bedrooms, good water pressure (esp. in one shower). The island is amazing. Pristine which beaches, friendly locals, friendly tourists. Totally charming. 100% recommend for anyone!

A perfect Christmas 2015
We absolutely loved The Banyan Cottage! We were looking for an affordable house on HI and we loved this cedar, no frills cottage! My husband, 2 college aged daughters, and I couldn't have picked a better place for the price. Alexis, the house manager, answered all of our questions. The internet stopped working and she came over with a new router. Harbour Island is beautiful and the sand is actually pink. The first night we went to Ramora Bay and listened to calypso music and then ate at Aquapazza. It was so good and a beautiful setting! We ate at The Rock House for dinner one night and it was delicious. We also ate at Valentines which has an excellent view of the sunset and more affordable. We ate at Ma Ruby's twice and enjoyed meeting Dr. Lee and Ma Ruby! We also enjoyed the Cheeseburger in Paradise! Tiki Hut was fun if you like loud music. We had lunch at Sip Sip and The Blue Bar and it was expensive, but good. The Lobster Quesadilla at Sip Sip is excellent & basically fed all of us! We also ate down on Bay Street near the docks several times. Loved The Queen Conch- the conch salad is awesome as well as fried conch and fried lobster! The night life was pretty dismal Christmas week, but we heard the week after Christmas is hopping! We rented bikes, golf cart, and a boat one day from Michael's and we were very happy! Michael greeted us the day we arrived and escorted us to our cottage! One thing to know, the cottage did not have chairs, umbrella, or snorkeling gear. We were lucky because we had family that rented another house on the island that had plenty of chairs and their beach was right next to The Dunmore. Everything on Harbour Island, for the most part, is expensive. When you're packing, throw in coffee, cereal & snacks- you'll be glad you did! A case of beer is 50 bucks. Liquor is not bad- we found a liquor store on Bay Street that had great prices on wine! We had an excellent week in Harbour Island!

Affordable for Family of 4
This was a great place for our family to stay while enjoying Harbour Island. It is centrally located on the island which makes everything very easy to get to. There is plenty of shade around the place so it never got to hot inside for us. The place had everything you could need in a vacation property!

Wonderful place to spend Christmas
Harbour Island is a charming place and Back Banyans Cottage was perfect for our family. We were able to walk and enjoy the beautiful beach, or walk in the other direction to the little town. Melissa and her husband, took care of any requests we had (more wineglasses, questions about the island, etc) and were very promp and professional.

Perfect and Affordable Cottage
Our party of six adults and two toddlers stayed at Back Banyan over Thanksgiving, and we were delighted with the property. Very reasonably priced, it's only a few minutes walk from a gorgeous pink sand beach that feels private, it is so secluded. The cottage is clean, very well stocked and safe for curious babies. It's an easy walk to groceries and restaurants. The property manager was helpful throughout the process of confirming our reservation. We all had a fantastic time and hope to come back again soon!

The Harbour Island paradise life is pricey. But Sam and i were saved by Back Banyans. The reasonable rent reflects the simplicity of the owner's northeastern taste. The island life is spent outside of your house! Although we spent 4 weeks during the winter months on the island, I have discovered that even a summer stay is breezy and beautiful. Back Banyans is shady and secluded, and yet just minutes away from the waterfront village, great restaurants, and the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. (you have to love that!) Best of all is the crest of the pink beach dunes just up the road. Half the travel fun is renting your own gulf cart vehicle to explore the island stem to stern. I did that and completed many plein air watercolor paintings. To stop and then take a late afternoon walk on the wide, firm beach gives you a chance to reflect on the day and breathe in the ocean air. We ended up walking miles, more each day! Coming home to this cozy cottage is a good feeling. Meals can be made in a well supplied kitchen that is all part of the main living space, a great spot to congregate and toast everyone's joyful experiences.

Perfect low key get away
My husband and I used this property as a get away from big city stress--it is the perfect place to unwind--lots of sun and beach--great for quiet walks at sunset, but also enough "night life" if one wants to go out for a drink at a friendly bar. House is set up for lounging or working--we did both. Plenty of places to shop for food on island to cook in the well stocked kitchen, or go across the street for great local specialities. As shown in the photos included in the listing, the property itself is attractive and well maintained, with attention to details such as jigsaw puzzles and a small library of thrillers. House is centrally located within an easy walk to beach, shops, and restaurants. Owners are helpful and ready to answer questions. We would go back to stay and would certainly recommend the property to friends and family.

My 3rd escape to Harbour Island/Back Banyans Cottage
Every few years, I get burnt out so I escape to this cottage on Harbour Island around Chrismas time. It's a short flight from Miami. Everybody on the island is friendly and the weather is always great. The food is excellent and napping on the pink sands beach is my favorite hobby. Yes, the sand actually looks pink and the water is perfectly clear. Occasionally, you will see people riding horses bare back on the beach. The cottage is quiet, clean, and it has a tropical feel with the wooden cedar floors and furniture. It has a yard and across the street is Ma Ruby's restaurant. The living room, full kitchen, and a bath are in the front of the cottage and the bedrooms and second bath are in the rear. The traveler's log book at the cottage has many stories from previous guests. Everybody who knows me has heard about my stays at this cottage on Harbour Island. Enjoy...

Our family began coming to Harbour Island for long vacations in 1956. We have owned several houses on the island and, in 1992, we built a very special cottage for family vacations and get-togethers.

Why they chose this property

Harbour Island is a wonderful place for beach lovers, runners and walkers, swimmers, surfers, snorkelers, boating enthusiasts, and fishermen. It is a low-key place that has no large hotels, no theme parks, and no crowds.

What makes this property unique

On Harbour Island, you are not only treated to one of the world's most peaceful pink sand beaches, but you also get the opportunity to experience a friendly island culture with a sense of its fascinating history. Only three miles long, the island has first-class restaurants as well as stalls and takeout places selling conch and other delicious local specialties.
