About this property

Close to Surf and Yoga - 2 Hammocks Included

Nosara is like Hawaii as it was in 1940, but with high speed 'premium' DSL WiFi, and two hammocks. You are only 2 hours from the Liberia airport, and you can use a rental car, which you can pick up at the airport and drop in Nosara or we can send a van. This is a rustic surf town with dirt roads, friendly people, and lots of yoga and surfing going on. Your cottage is a 10 minute walk from the main surf beach, a five minute walk to the Yoga Institute, a two minute walk to the Spanish Language Institute, and "downtown." You are so close to downtown that, within a couple minutes walk, there is an ice cream shop, a mini-mart, a clinic, clothing stores, real estate offices, a bank, ATV and bike rentals, a lot of cafes and restaurants, and two surf shops, where you can rent boards and arrange for lessons. If you buy food at the nearby Cafe de Paris, you can swim in their pool. In the cottage, you have wireless high speed DSL internet, 24 hour on-call maintenence, local guides/maps, weekly housekeeping (daily housekeeping is optional), optional air conditioning (rarely needed), beach towels, ceiling fans, house linens are provided, a safe (will hold wallets, passports, 3 laptops), security (ornate ironwork on doors and windows), a blender, a juicer, a coffeemaker, a pressure cooker, a microwave, a refrigerator, a stove, a toaster, a rice cooker, optional personal laundry at $10 per load, a covered porch with two hammocks, off-road parking, outside shower, a large patio, patio furniture, and a beautiful yard. You are located above one of Nosara's many nature preserves and you will see a lot of wildlife. During the day the howler and spider monkeys play in the trees, pizotes wander through the yard (they love peanut butter), and tropical birds and butterflies fill the air around you. I walk to the beach twice a day to surf, and usually are not disappointed by what I find. Dawn and sunset surfing are the best if tides and winds are right. The locals are outstanding surfers, but they make room for visitors. In fact, I really can't say enough about the friendly, hospitable people of Nosara. They especially warm up to you when you try your Spanish on them. This is not just a rental house for income - I live here part of the year myself, and I have fixed it up to be cozy and complete. I don't scrimp on any of the amenities, because I like to fix things up nicely for myself as well. I bought this cottage after I had come to Nosara for years to surf and enjoy the food, scenery, monkeys, and local population. With the purchase of the cottage, I inherited a wonderful wife/husband team of managers, who are on the spot when anything needs attending to. They manage the gardens, the housekeeping, the laundry, the renter's needs, and renter scheduling. Several photos show surfboards, but they are not provided. We also tried to provide bikes to ride, but the salty air put a stop to that :)

Keywords: High speed DSL WiFi, surfing, bungalow, casita, private, monkeys visit, pizotes visit, A/C, fans, shopping, night life, safe for valuables (can fit 3 laptops, wallets, purses), secure (attractive ironwork is standard for Nosara), housekeeping service, laundry service, hammocks, off-road parking, covered and lighted patio, yoga institute nearby, yoga mat for your use, fishing, wildlife, nature preserve, waterfalls, zipline, beach, hiking.

Please be aware that when traveling in Central America, you may encounter water, electricity and internet outages. Service is slow. We do our best to keep everything working for you, but this is the situation.

Great little place in the jungle
Great little casita in the jungle barely 5min walk to Cafe de Paraiso and Organico grocery store. Not quite 10min walk to Bodhi Tree. Not too far from the beach either. Only issue we had was the town shutting off the water 4 of our 5 nights, due to drought conditions. Property manager was great to communicate with and brought jugs of water for us. All in all, it suited us well. Bit of road noise and yes, you'll see jungle bugs (mostly ants). Enjoyed being close to the shops and the Farmer's Market Tuesday morning. No vehicle needed; property manager arranged transportation to the casita and to the airport as well.

Great spot!
My partner and I loved our stay! The patio backs on to the jungle and onto trails which made walking around Nosara easy. The hammocks were a great touch as well we loved relaxing on them. This place was very clean, and we even had the housekeeper come once during our stay as it was over a week, and she was incredibly thorough. It was very nice to have a kitchen to use and a large fridge. We used the coffee maker and the blender a lot. There is a small organic grocery store within walking distance, and a fantastic bakery! While my partner and I loved our stay and will absolutely be booking this place again in the future it isn’t for everyone. If you are even a little freaky about bugs, this might not be your place. Because this unit backs onto the jungle as you can expect there are bugs, and at night time little ants and millipedes make their way in under the door. I would also like to state that these bugs are harmless and I never found one anywhere besides the floor. This is just a cautionary statement to anyone severely afraid of bugs. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

It was indeed a little paradise!
Jason and Claudia are super responsive and helpful throughout my stay. The place is conveniently located close to restaurants and shops, but just hidden away enough to shelter you from the road noise and weekend parties. You have to walk through a forested area for 3-4 minutes to get to the main road, which is fantastic for seeing and listening to the wildlife and giving you privacy. There is ongoing construction next door, but it didn't bother me at all. Overall, I really enjoyed staying and remote working from Jason's place. Thank you!

Great location, nice casita, too bad there’s loud noise from construction next door
The casita is great! The location is awesome. As a female solo traveller I didn’t feel super safe at night as the casita is off the jungle trail / looks at the jungle and there’s no security gate from the trail to the front door or from the road onto the driveway… so it feels a bit exposed. And with the construction next door, the crew lives on site in the yard (which is what the patio of the casita looks toward) so it doesn’t feel super private for eating dinner outside etc. The casita is super cute and clean, and a great location to walk to the beach / shops. The downside is construction next door - it is really loud. Bring ear plugs if you want to sleep in as construction starts at 5:45am and ends at 5pm. If you’re a couple / planning to surf this property is awesome! If you’re a female solo traveller, you might want to look elsewhere. The property owner + manager are great! :)

I loved the place. Lazy hammock time watching the jungle. Nice layout for a single or a couple. Central to lots of restaurants, stores and market. Good air conditioning and strong internet. Property manager was attentive and pleasant. I’m a host myself and would recommend this cabin.

Overall good
The property management people were great. Communication excellent. The description was accurate by saying there is construction nexr door. True, 6am to 5pm. I was out of the house from 8am til 6pm so it didnt bother me much. Especially good fit for 1 or 2 adults that want to be walking distance to restaurants and shops.

Quaint and perfect
We loved Pequeño Paradaiso. It was the perfect size for two of us. We had immediate access to a trail system behind the apt as well as a local, organic grocery store. There were plenty of linens, towels, dishes, and anything one might need to prepare a small meal. We were given permission to leave behind any food not consumed for the staff so we did not feel bad about wasting the fresh food we didn’t have time to consume. Lastly, communication with the property management folks was quite easy and they were very responsive. We would stay here again if we ever travel back to Nosara.

Insecticide and No Internet!!
Heavy insecticide odor upon arrival at property. We were informed that the internet was down and would be up later that afternoon or early the next morning. After texting the owners representative five times about the internet we were informed it would be unlikely that the internet would be working for the 3 days...possibly the entire stay. In addition we had significant issues with the front security door, on several occasions it took in excess of five minutes to unlock. No bicycle available. Due to the issues we had we decided to vacate the property after one nights stay. The owner had refused to refund any monies as a show of good gesture. There are much better locations. We were told that the beach was two blocks away. Not true. Security bars on all windows and door due to crime. Not sure its a safe location. I would not recommend staying at this property. We ended up at a better property and much better location. I understand that there are significant issues with bugs in this area, but to breath in the insecticide for 12 hours gave me a terrible headache, and then the owner blamed it on my girl friend. Do yourself a favor and don't rent this place. Cheers

Quiet and Relaxing
This vacation rental met all our needs for 2 people. It was perfect for a nice getaway to surf on the beach. The hostess was kind and answered all our questions. This gave us a nice quiet place in the shade to stay. We had a wonderful time exploring Playa Guiones and it was nice to have a trail right to the town and beach. We will definitely stay here again!

Close to everything
Stayed for a month, October 2018. There is a construction site next door so noise was an issue. The internet and phone were unusable for two weeks because the phone company was called instead of checking that a cable was not plugged in correctly. Absent these two, it’s a nice place and close to everything.

Overpriced
This place is overpriced. Very small, there was a construction site next door which started working at 6 am every single day. I was not told about this. The house also has the loudest refrigerator you can possibly imagine. Sometimes I thought it was preparing for take off.

Never wanted to leave!!!
Let me start by saying we absolutely LOVED our stay! If you are looking for a resort type stay, this is not where you want to be. If you are looking for the friendliest people, sun, surf and just kicking back this is the place for you. The vibe is very laid back and rustic. Here’s a few pointers: 1. Bring a flashlight. It gets very dark at night and sometimes the electric goes out for a few seconds to a few minutes you will not be able to see you hand in front of your face it’s so dark. It’s also good to have if you go out at night. 2. Buy some water when you get there. They turn the water off around 6 pm and turn it back on around 8am during the dry season. This only happened twice in the week we were there. You will need water to flush the toilet. Just a minor inconvenience in my opinion. 3. Everyone goes to the beach at night to watch the sunset. We didn’t discover this till our last two nights. Some of the restaurants offer live music in the evening so Make reservations to have dinner and enjoy the music. The main shops close at 5, the tiny convenience store at 8 and everything else around 10. The only issue we encountered in our rental is the shower has no pressure. The outside shower does but not the inside. Our last day it was literally a trickle I had to use a pot and fill it up and dump it over my body. I informed Virginie of the issue. Also, there isn’t a washer it is broken so you have to wash your clothes by hand, go to the laundromat or pay someone to do it for you.

Review of 2 Surfboards
We liked the property and it was very close to the town, within walking distance, less than a 5 minute walk. We stayed for two weeks and spent a lot of time on the porch swinging in the hammock. If you are looking for convenience to the town, where you would not need a car, this is the place for you. There were some issues with the property that need to be addressed: 1. They added two more spots for surfboards if you brought your own. The unfortunate part of that was it interfered with getting into the bed. We hit our back/head a few times trying to get into bed. 2. The internet was pretty much non existent. They were working on the road to pave the main road so maybe that had something to do with it. 3. We did have some issues with the refrigerator, toilet that we needed to call maintenance. They were responsive but having the maintenance crew come while we were there was a bit inconvenient. 4. The inside shower pressure was very low. Because no one was renting next to us, we ended up using the outside shower which had great pressure. 5. Another hammock on the porch, one was not enough. We loved the town of Guiones! There were a few good restaurants in walking distance and if needed, there was the TUK TUK (spelling??) to get you to the restaurants a bit farther away. I would highly recommend La Luna and El Chivo! There was also a great "pub" to get wonderful burgers and beer, Burgers and Brew. For juices, I would recommend Go Juice. Great juices and smoothies.

Magical Place
After having a rough year, I took a solo trip down to Nosara to scout out the town for a father-son surfing trip. The owner, Jason was incredibly warm and helpful leading up to the trip - so much so we moved our conversation to private email. The place is pristine, tucked away in nature but a very short walk, like 3 minutes, from the shops and restaurants of South Guiones on one side and the Bodhi Tree resort on the other. His porch lends itself to naps and quiet reflection amongst the flora and animal residents of the area. The interior is calming and clean. I can't think of one thing that could have been better - his warmth and helpfulness as a host, the location, and the place itself. I will most definitely be returning.

Perfect for Two
We loved our stay at this house. We were able to walk to the beach (even with large surfboards) as well as walk to various stores and restaurants. Great location. The jungle view off of the back porch was amazing and we saw a lot of monkeys and iguanas right from there. The hammock and boards were a nice touch. The kitchen had everything we needed. Everything was very secure and the owner and managers of the house were all very helpful. If we ever make it back to Costa Rica we would definitely stay here again.

About the host

Hosted by Jason Greenlee

Host profile image
I'm 68 and retired from fire fighting. I've been a surfer all my life, and spent my retirement savings on this place down in Costa Rica. To support my aquatic habits, I run three pet-friendly vacation rentals in San Antonio, Texas. I live with my two Vizslas, Jack and Jill, in a cottage behind one of my rentals. This 400 square foot bachelor/dog pad is the ultimate down-sizing. If we can't cram it into our little cottages in Nosara and San Antonio, we don't need it. Three of my places are solar-powered, by the way.

Why they chose this property

I chose to split my time between Costa Rica and San Antonio because they bring together the yin and the yang of my life. I love splitting my time between San Antonio Mexican restaurants, Starbucks, and USA Today, on the one hand, and hanging out in the lineup off the big palm tree in Nosara on the other hand. My dogs feel that I need to find a girlfriend (maybe someone that can cook their favorite meals?), but I keep telling them that finding someone that will put up with us is going to be a challenge!

What makes this property unique

You can hear the sound of the surf from my patio. Watching the surf cam (google Nosara Surf Live Webcam) and listening to the volume of the waves tips us off if it's time to wax up. This property sits just east of a large national reserve, so the patio looks out onto jungle that will be there for generations to come. Our neighbors are renters, so the faces change, people come and go, and I meet many interesting people who are all here for the same reasons I'm here - surfing and yoga. My favorite things to do here include going to the health food store and buying gluten-free brownies, walking around on the many dirt roads in the area, and going down to the beach for the daily sunset party. A lot of the locals show up and just mingle while watching the sunset, and, sometimes, people stay and light a bonfire. There's a nice, several hour, walk up the beach all the way to Ostional, the turtle beach (or you can drive).
