About this property

Country School House at Solidago Farm Unique, cozy small farm experience!

A piece of historic charm in picturesque Chester county, first records dating back to c. 1869 and giving Ground Hog College its name. Previously 1 of 5 public schools serving the rural community, located on a quiet road with beautiful forests to explore and a working farm with fresh organic produce, milk & eggs. You'll experience a romantic and cozy stay that is close to Longwood Gardens, Cheslyn nature preserve, and local wineries.
The school house is directly attached to a full time residence of 2 farmers, one little farmhand & 2 friendly dogs that you are most likely to meet upon arrival. This is a working residence complete with a lively yard full of free range chickens, ducks and family of goats. Everyone is friendly but please be mindful of the electric fence that keeps our livestock contained. Directly across the street, you'll see our cows and sheep grazing lazily at dusk and always enjoy ear scratches. Along the property is almost 50 acres of forested land with cleared paths for your enjoyment. The forest borders our 2 acre organic food production that you are also welcome to visit. You might hear us going to and fro as we are a working farm. This property was acquired by our family and the schoolhouse has been completely renovated in 2023. We are so excited to welcome guests to enjoy our little piece of history. The area is full of activities that is guaranteed to suite everyone's interest. We are down the road from ChesLen preserve and Northbrook canoe company, both places you can spend the day on the water or immersed in nature or a moments drive from downtown West Chester, where you can grab a drink and do some shopping. We are surrounded by delicious food and only an hour from the city life of Philly, truly the perfect balance of city and rural life.
Guest access
You have full access to the school house which is complete with full kitchen, bathroom, sun room and cellar that contains a washer/drier. The patio out front has a bbq, tables and chairs. There is also a firepit for your enjoyment.

The attached stone house, garage and barn are private.

A Farmhouse Dream

Words will be difficult to describe how wonderful our stay here was. This was our very first time using a rental service vs. staying at a B & B. From the moment you step inside you get a feeling of peace. So much so, that you won't want to leave. The building itself has been restored in such a beautiful way showcasing some very talented craftsmanship. The hosts have thought of everything you could possibly need during your stay. A full service kitchen with an assortment of Kurigs and teas, all kitchen supplies if you would like to cook, everything so tastefully decorated. When you step into your bedroom/living area, it's simply breath taking. Being able to have a fire during our stay made it very comfortable and cozy. We even dined by the fire one night. The shades come down over the windows so you're able to sleep in the morning atop a fluffy, cozy bed with ample pillows. The shower is heavenly, and the bathroom has everything you need. Also inside the room is a wardrobe to hang your clothes and storage space under the bed for your bags. I loved sitting on the porch with a blanket in the morning when the sun came up. The cows across the street would lay by the fence. My favorite part was that there are sheep and cows on the property. They are the sweetest animals. We cannot wait to come back to this tranquil place in our favorite area. Donna even made my husband's birthday special by having some balloons there when we arrived. Thank you for such a great time!

Incredible Holiday Stay!

Our stay at Ground Hog College was for an extended time during the holidays. From the moment we walked through the door, until the day we drove away (with a tear in my eye, I might add), we felt like we were living out a classic holiday movie. The hosts made sure to make us feel at home by decorating the living quarters in true Christmas fashion. Magical. The historical nature of the former country schoolhouse has been preserved while still providing all the modern amenities one could possibly need. The hosts' attention to detail in design, decor, and the provided amenities was impeccable. The accommodations were not only visually impressive, the ambience was cozy and comfortable. Everything we needed was amply provided for, and when the odd occasion popped up where we needed something, the hosts were prompt in responding to ensure our needs were met. We absolutely loved the sounds of the working farm all around us. Each morning as we grabbed our first cup of coffee, we were greeted with the morning calls of roosters, cows, sheep, goats and geese. We would spend our mornings with a cup of coffee in the front sitting room, watching the sun creep up into the sky and the farm animals happily roam across the pastures. The accommodations were the perfect size for the two of us, but ample enough that we were able to have guests visit us for occasional get-togethers.We will always treasure our stay at Ground Hog College!

My husband and I got married here and it could not have been more perfect! We absolutely loved the charm of the farm setting and how intimate and unique that made our wedding day. The hosts went above and beyond to ensure we had the best experience possible and were very accommodating and incredibly kind! We are so grateful to them for everything! Each of our guests were in awe of the schoolhouse and how beautifully renovated it was. If you are looking for a place to just enjoy the cozy countryside in West Chester or are searching for a special venue for your event, don’t hesitate to book this wonderful spot.

Beautiful property

The location and accommodations are beautiful. Out in the country but minutes from Longwood Gardens, Brandywine River Museum, and Winterthur. There was a plumbing issue and the hosts did everything they could to resolve it, and were very forthcoming and accommodating. It was disappointing but based on the property and the professionalism of the hosts I would definitely stay in the future.

Quiet and remote

The remote location aside, this VRBO was quite comfortable. All the amenities of a modern condo with the old-world charm of a farmhouse.

Lovely spot near Longwood Gardens

The school house is immaculately restored and furnished. Everything we needed! From the fire pit to breakfast recommendations to television and privacy shades, we could not have asked for more. We plan to return for our next Longwood visit.

Escape to the School House!

If you are looking for a stay that is first class, well-appointed, relaxing, peaceful, and a bit out-of-the-ordinary, check out this place! The hosts have done such a great job on the remodel! This property is situated on a quiet country road but is only 6 miles from places to get food and shop. We loved hearing the chickens, ducks, pigs, and goats! Any hotel could not compare.
