About this property

Charming Horse Farm Country Cottage on Rolling Hills

This guest house is at the center of our 30 acre Gentlemen's ranch, one mile south of Suttons Bay and 1/2 mile from the Bay. The address for our location is 1624 South West Bayshore Drive (which is M-22), Suttons Bay While there is not a water view unless you are on top one of our hills, the setting is an idyllic location with panoramic valley and hill views. This house has a warm natural all wood interior with beautiful artwork, yet all the modern amenities such as wifi and satellite TV with multiple movie channels.
The grounds are professionally landscaped and maintained by the Landscape Architect owner.
There is a large open area that includes a wrap-around leather couch and a loft with two beds along with a separate bedroom with a queen-size bed with an exceptional quality mattress. It is important to note that the only access to the loft is a straight up and down ladder. Because of this if you have kids younger than five or adults older than 40 or so (depending how spry you feel) the loft is probably not for you.
There is plenty of room to park any toys (campers, boats, trailers) right on the property. The owners have a 26 foot motorboat and other water toys, so arrangements could be made for their use. If there is a need to stall your horses, or if you want to ride a horse or two, those arrangements can be made as well.
On the property is a large barn, a small barn (both for horses) along with indoor and outdoor riding arenas. Attached to the indoor riding arena is a viewing area with a pool table, bathroom and laundry.
At night, there is a firepit area to warm up on the cold Northern Michigan nights and we are far enough away from any city so that the panoramic star views are incredible.
We are only 1/2 mile away from the Suttons Bay to Traverse City trail and you could ride bikes/horses snowshoe/hike/cross-country ski in any direction from here and see wonderful water vistas and orchard/hill/valley views.
We are 30 minutes away from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the Homestead Resort that has skiing with hills that border on Lake Michigan.

Early fall in northern Michigan
We had a great time at this location. It was easy to find, right on the main road along Grand Traverse Bay. The property is a working horse farm and landscape business, so there is equipment and plants around. Beautiful horses grazing in the fields is a plus. The guest house is a beautifully rustic northern Michigan retreat. Lots of wood in all rooms. The loft was somewhat difficult to get to, by way of a ladder, straight up the wall. My only complaint would be with the shower. It had low water pressure and was lukewarm. Overall, it is a great property and we will consider it as a place to stay on a future visit to the Leelanau area.

Clean, quiet and quaint
We had a restful stay at Debbie and Jeff’s place. I really enjoyed watching their horses. Their guesthouse is conveniently located close to wineries, hiking, Sutton’s Bay restaurants and shops and Traverse City. Looking forward to our next visit!

Great stay!
We loved this property. Very clean and peaceful and so close to everything we wanted to do on the Leelanau Peninsula. We were within easy biking distance of downtown Suttons Bay and several nearby wineries. It's also only a 15 minute drive from Traverse City so we had the best of both worlds.

Pretty property
The property was lovely. The patio with gas fireplace was a plus. The amenities in home were sufficient. The hosts were lovely to chat with. Unfortunately for we three ladies in our 60’s, we did not use the loft to sleep in. We didn’t feel comfortable using the ladder that goes into the loft as it is straight up the wall and having to use potty in middle if the night would have been difficult. Might be fun for children or younger adults. But it was a really cute lovely place!

Wonderful place to stay. We enjoyed the horses, the cats, and the owner's dog. The recommendations the owner made for food were perfect. The space is clean and cozy and has everything we needed. The property was close to everything we wanted to do, hiking, wineries, and hanging out in not only Traverse City but Sleeping Bear Dunes. We definitely recommend this place. We loved it!!

Great location and property!
The property was so wonderful, I wish we could have stayed longer! Unfortunately, there was a huge storm the night we were there and thousands of homes lost power around the state including the property. The owner came out right away to check on us and see what he could do to help! It was so nice feeling cared for despite an unexpected situation! And thankfully, the power came back relatively quickly! Super friendly and caring owners!

About the host

Hosted by Debbie Slocombe

Host profile image
Jeff and Debbie live on the property with their daughter Samara. Jeff is an attorney and Debbie is a Landscape Architect who designed the beautiful grounds and maintains them as well. They enjoy the life up North with the opportunity to raise, ride and show horses.

Why they chose this property

Jeff and Debbie have been coming to the Traverse City/Suttons Bay all of their lives for vacations and decided to move to the area in 1999. They love the location of Suttons Bay because it has all the activities of Traverse City, yet the idyllic lifestyle of a Village just a short distance away.

What makes this property unique

Our home is just a five minute walk to the beach or a one mile bike ride/hike to Suttons Bay. The TART trail (Rails to Trails Suttons Bay to Traverse City) makes it a 13 mile bike ride to Traverse City.
You can bring your own bikes or borrow some of ours to ride into the Village for a nice breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Because we are on 21 acres surrounded by much more open area, you will not be constricted to a small area.
