About this property

Forget Shoes, Walk to Beach Barefoot with Kids and Grandkids

Our grandparents purchased this traditional beach cottage in 1952 from a family that lived in it year round. Subsequent improvements do not successfully hide these simple origins. No granite countertops, no TV, this is a refuge from the modern world. But the kitchen and smaller bathroom were completely renovated in 2013. The cottage is 75 yards from the bluff and path to the Surfside beach, the best beach on the Island. Water views from the deck, kitchen and living room. One bedroom has a queen bed, two have double beds and the fourth has two sets of bunk beds and a slew of children's' games and toys. There is a small playhouse for kids. One full bathroom and one half bath and a delightful outdoor shower. Endless hot water (not, of course, that you would fail to conserve water). Forced air heat warms you quickly on cool foggy days.

Great location dingy cottage
Hosts are very nice and property location is great, but condition of cottage is dingy at best. We arrive to find old and new cobwebs and spiders everywhere. Spent the better part of our first day cleaning so we could stay. Host did respond to our email right away by email and phone and did refund our cleaning fee. Furniture is stained and cottage needs a serious deep cleaning.

Great location!
We spent a fantastic and relaxing week here with our four adult children. The location is ideal. The home owner and property manager were instantly available for the very few minor things that came up in the beginning of our stay. We definitely plan on a return trip next year!

Birthday get-together
My family of 10 and 3 generations enjoyed our stay in Nantucket very much. The kids loved the yard and it was used every single day! The proximity to the beach and the short drive to town were also quite lovely. Thank you for sharing your home!

Perfect for Mom's 60th
We rented the house for our mom's 60th birthday. It is a perfect house for family to get together. The yard was an added bonus that we didn't anticipate. The house is full of charm that you won't find elsewhere. Would certainly come back.

Old school charm with plenty of comforts
When you walk into this charming cottage you immediately can tell that this is a much loved family vacation home with a long history from the old black and white photos and the collection of classic books on the shelves. No cheesy tchotchkes, or goofy fake nautical antiques adorning the walls. The house and location are perfect for so many reasons: the kids can walk back and forth to the beach without the hassle of having to pack everything for the day; the kitchen is well equipped; the yard perfect for playing and BBQs; furniture is comfortable and not precious - you can put your feet up without stressing about a bit of sand on them; the essential outdoor shower is what it is and unless you have peeping toms in your family, there's no lack of privacy; the beds are firm. We had a lot of rain during our visit but the kids loved playing games inside while the adults kicked back on the comfy sofas reading and napping. What more does anyone want on a vacation? I think it'd make a great film set location with so much nostalgic charm. It's exactly what we imagined Nantucket to be like.

Feel the tension melt away!
After years of beach vacations, my husband said our time at "The Mews" was the absolutely best and most relaxing vacation he's had. The house is like a step back in time in the best sense. It was cozy, nostalgic and sweet. With 3 kids, aged 10-15, and family joining us for much of the trip, we never felt overcrowded. Surfside is laid back and casual. The House is just west of the main Surfside beach so their was little to no traffic, and the beaches were uncrowded - even in August. Nice size yard for the kids with plenty of room. Only 3 houses from the beach path, it was close enough for the kids to walk back whenever they had had enough sun or needed a sandwich. The Wave into town was only a few houses away at Surfside beach. Great breeze off the ocean meant the house stayed very comfortable, though we occasionally needed blankets at night! -And we never needed bug spray -EVER! Loved the morning walks on the beach with the dog, and stargazing at night. The kitchen was new and well stocked. The owner, Frank, called to make sure everything was taken care of for us and was very helpful. Can't wait to go back!!

Great location, tired house
My family and I stayed in this house in July of 2013. This is the fifth house we've rented on Surfside beach in the last six years. The location of this house is great. It's a very short walk to the path that takes you to the less crowded part of Surfside beach. That being said, we had many issues with the house. I would liken the house to an old sneaker, I'm sure the owner loves it and finds it comfortable, but no one wants to wear someone else's old sneaker. 1) Cleanliness- This house did not meet our standards for cleanliness for a rental house. It had not been professionally cleaned prior to our arrival. The floors and other surfaces were very dirty, there was perishable food left in the refrigerator, the bathrooms were not adequately cleaned, there were dirty towels in the hamper, there were hairs on the bed linens, and there was lice shampoo in the shower. 2) Hot Water- the above description states there is endless hot water. In fact, there is endless lukewarm water. No matter how long you wait you cannot get water hot enough to properly wash dishes or laundry and it makes for an unpleasant shower. 3) Outdoor shower- the outdoor shower is not fully enclosed. It's enclosed on two sides by a bush that is somewhat see through, and the remaining side can be covered with a towel to create a door. There is a hot water valve, but the hot water has been disconnected. If you are comfortable with the lack of privacy it is nice inside the shower. 4) Kitchen- the kitchen is nicely updated but we found dirty dishes in the cabinet and the lack of hot water made us wary of the overall cleanliness. In addition, there was a persistent leak in the half bathroom coming from the sink or toilet. We notified the owner, but he wasn't concerned. We continued to use the bathroom because one bathroom wasnt enough for our group of five, but the floor was covered in water and smelled like urine. In addition, the deck is nice but has no dining table and does not have a water view as stated above.

Amazing Family Vacation......
My family of 5 were lucky enough to discover this jewel about 6 years ago, each summer we look forward to our week or weeks (if lucky enough) at Surfside. This house is perfect for a short walk to the best beach in the world, or a short walk to the bus stop if you want to go into town. The Deck has been home to some lovely evening cocktails with friends, watching the kids play wiffle ball in the yard. It's a classic Americana vacation and anyone that stays is lucky to have the chance. Oh, if it were only July now,I can see the stars and hear the surf. Great family house or friend house, my wife and her girl friends spent some time here and had a blast as well.

A Wonderful Summer Week in Nantucket
My girlfriend and I, plus another couple, stayed at this property in the late summer of 2010 for about a week. The home and its location made for an absolutely great week. Our days generally consisted of a group prepared breakfast in the eat-in kitchen; followed by a 2 minute walk to the beach for swimming, sun soaking and eventual lunch; an afternoon bike excursion to explore and pick up what we wanted for the day's dinner; a late afternoon cocktail on the front patio; and an evening of talking, cards, and games. The house is as described and pictured. The bedrooms and living areas are both comfortable and decorated with items from what looks like a long history on the island. There are two separate bathrooms, plus an outdoor shower that adds charm to the summer experience. As mentioned, there is a full kitchen which allowed us to prepare fresh fish bought from the local seafood shops. This house was also the location of my first lobster boil. We also used the gas grill for several meals. For our bike excursions, we rented bikes from a place just down the road. With them, we were able to pick up fresh pies (which we creatively tied to the back of our bikes), the fresh seafood, and other groceries. They also allowed us to ride "downtown" to Nantucket's main shopping and dining area. The highlight of everything was definitely the beach access. You can see the beach from the house and your feet are only a matter of steps from the beach's sand. We found that the particular location was directly in between two more popular beach entrances, which meant our beach plot was free of cars and shared by only a handful of others. If you want a busier section of the beach, you can just walk down the shore for about 5 minutes. (Final tip--take a flashlight and walk out to the beach at night. The sound of the tide and the stars are really nice.)
