About this property

Charming & Classic LAKEFRONT Chalet: Vintage 3BR, 1BA and beautifully furnished

Due to local COVID-19 ordinance banning short-term stays until further notice, contact ONLY if you are interested in a long-term (30 days or more) booking for people who are 1) healthcare worker or first responder, 2) in vulnerable population (e.g., victim of domestic violence), 3) CT resident who is self-isolating or subject to quarantine, or 4) individuals receiving long-term medical care.

Dubbed "Bunting House" in honor of the family who occupied this home for 60 years, this house is nestled in the woods with Candlewood Lake right outside the front door and expansive tree-lined water views from kitchen, living room, and master bedroom. A stay at Bunting House provides sanctuary from the noise and chaos of a busy world, and offers a nostalgic memories for those who summered at an old lake house in the past.

The "gemutlich" ambiance of an original 30s vaulted-ceiling lake house with its rugged Adirondack siding, pine shiplap paneling, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace (complete with original 1930s moose head!), scullery with chopping block, cooking kitchen with dining area, and period antiques in every room, is what makes this house so charming. Flooded with natural light--especially with a "wall of windows" on three sides of the kitchen--and with lake or lush green forest seen from every room, this is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the feeling of home.

Charming lake cottage

We had a great time staying at the bunting house. We stayed 3 nights/4days and enjoyed every minute. If you have a boat the dock is perfect. Power outlet right at end of dock for charging. I recommend to anyone looking for a quaint, cozy, comfortable, relaxing place to stay.

LOVE!

Casey gave us the warmest welcome with fresh flowers! That was just the beginning of our wonderful stay. The place is fabulous, clean, charming and SO COZY. We all commented on how comfortable the beds were. The location and view of the water is perfecto. I would go back in a second, and will. Lovely getaway weekend. Rosemary

About the host

Hosted by Casey Jordan

Host profile image
Attorney, professor, avid snowboarder, trekker, scuba-diver and adventure seeker. I may need to traverse the side lawn to access my boat at the dock, so I really appreciate guests who are friendly and laid-back. Relax in an Adirondack chair, swim off the dock, enjoy our kayaks, or consider renting a boat from Gerard's Marina a mile away. I am big on communication and personal responsibility; Bunting House is one of three homes in our Juniper Lane family compound and not a primary rental property per se, so I seek guests who are also responsible, mature, and would treat this home as they would want people to treat their own home.

Why they chose this property

LAKEFRONT ! Updated in the last few years with all new "entertaining kitchen" and tiled bathroom , modernized lighting fixtures, etc. , this home features "old world" charm of a cabin-in-the-woods lakehouse and a comfortable "Ralph Lauren" style of rich textiles, tile, stone, architectural details, antique furniture, and leather seating. While the house is located in a secluded, almost rural area of New Milford, it offers modern convenience in that there is plenty of shopping just a few miles away on Route 7 : Walmart, Home Goods, Hope Depot, TJ Maxx, Staples, Peach Wave, etc.). Your best grocery stores are Stop & Shop, Big Y, and Aldi, and you can seek out your favorite libation at Classic Liquors or Nejame package store.

If you want to hike, you are near the Appalachian Trail entrance in Bull's Bridge and Kent, and there's great hiking at several state parks: Lover's Leap, Kent Falls, Mt. Tom, and Macedonia are the closest and most convenient. The local park is Harrybrook, and just down Candlewood Lake Road South is a small park called Dykes Point which gives you a lovely path along the lake.

Things to do outside the community:

~ Farmer's Market in New Milford on Saturday mornings in the warmer months.

~ Many hikes in the area (Naromi Land Trust trails [(website hidden)], access to the Appalachian Trail + more.)

~ Pratt Nature Center, biking on Lake Waramaug, Hopkins Inn, Hopkins Vineyard, White Silo Vineyard, DeGrazia Vinyard, Elephant's Trunk Flea Market, Bank Street Theater, and brunch at American Pie!
~ Like to ski? The house is centrally located close to several ski slopes:
* Thunder Ridge: a family oriented starter slope is about 40 minutes away across the NYS border in Patterson, NY
* Woodbury Ski Area a family resort, has winter tubing and other fun activities...45 minutes from the house
* Butternut in Great Barrington, MA is 1.5 hours away...a great family ski resort
* Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall, CT is closest, at only 30 minutes away

What makes this property unique

Only 1.5 hours from Manhattan, this is the perfect country retreat , weekender, or vacation home for busy professionals seeking solitude and "rustication," whether it is summers, weekends, or year-round (with skiing only a half hour away!).

Though the house is located in a private lake community, this house is NOT a member of that community, so guests cannot utilize the Community beach, clubhouse, or tennis courts. With immediate access to Candlewood Lake righit from the house and deck (and your own private lakefront chairs, dock, swimming, etc.), this is the perfect home for people who enjoy their privacy and don't wish to share a beach with 75 other families! Do note that the host and their family or guests may also enjoy the lakefront during your stay (i.e., just hang out in the chairs along the lake by accessing the lakefront by a path on the side of the house) but will not intrude on your personal space. Bring a friendly and neighborly attitude; you don't need to chat with others, and you may never even see others on the lakefront, but please be amenable to sharing the lake and dock with other occupants of the family compound if requested.
