About this property

Ash Cove Oceanfront Cottage with Spectacular Views

Spectacular views of Ash Cove, islands, and all the way out to the ocean from almost every room. Tall pines and fir trees whisper in the sea breeze.

Our 1905 renovated cottage is very private, 100 yards off the road and right on the water—the perfect setting for the ultimate vacation.

It’s all about the water in Harpswell. You can kayak from the front of the house--bring your own or use ours (with liability waiver) . There is a public boat launch just across the cove. Harpswell Sound and Casco Bay offer great water for fishing, sailing, motoring, or kayaking, and are easily accessed from Ash Cove.

The wrap-around porch is perfect for watching the sun rise and set, with a great view of wildlife: bald eagles, ospreys, herons, ducks, loons, cormorants, terns, harbor seals, and lobstermen. The yard is perfect for a game of badminton, horseshoes, corn hole (provided).

The house has an open floor plan. The family room has 180 degree views of the cove. The dining room is central to the house, between the family room and the kitchen, and also has water views. The kitchen is small, but we are avid cooks, so it is well-appointed. Close to the other living areas, you can cook and still be part of the conversation. Cozy living room is perfect for curling up in a big, comfy chair with a good book. Full bath and laundry are on the main floor.

Bedrooms are upstairs:
Master with king bed and full bath
Bedroom with queen bed
Bedroom with queen bed
Bedroom with single bed and twin mattress
Family bath with tub/shower.

The town of Harpswell is a set of fingerlike peninsulas stretching south from Brunswick. It has over 200 miles of shoreline with many miles of hiking trails administered by the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust.

Seafood restaurants abound around Harpswell. Family seafood restaurants and The Schoolhouse (more gourmet fare) are all a few minutes away. You’ll find a wider variety of cuisines in Brunswick. For local brew pubs try Flight Deck and Moderation Brewing, in Brunswick, and Sea Dog Brewing, in Topsham.

We want our house to be a real getaway, so there is no TV, only wi-fi for internet access. You can watch movies on your computer, and are welcome to bring your own TV and DVD player, if you wish. On rainy days, there is plenty of shopping in Brunswick, Topsham, and Freeport. Or visit the Maine Maritime Museum, in Bath, and two large multiplex cinemas--one in Brunswick and one in Topsham. All are 20 minutes away. And there is always something going on in Portland, less than an hour away: http://www.visitportland.com/calendar.aspx

Dogs (no more than 2) are welcome with permission of homeowners and a $100/dog non-refundable fee.

Please contact the owner before placing your reservation and initiating a payment online. Your rental fee will depend on the number of people in your party and whether or not you have a dog. We also have rental rules that need to be reviewed and signed prior to occupation.

Another Lovely Vacation in Harpswell
This is our third year vacationing in Harpswell and we had a really great time. The house’s location to hiking, kayaking and other activities is perfect for our interests. The house provides a very relaxing environment and is large enough for the entire family.

Great stay!
The home was so relaxing! We loved the amazing views and kayaking. The kitchen had everything we needed. The location was perfect for access to many hikes and nearby towns. The layout is perfect for a large family to assure everyone has their own space but also has tons of common space.

Gorgeous Ocean Views and Very Tranquil
The views of the cove cannot be beat. Hearing the lobstermen getting underway, cormorants, ospreys and bald eagles is very peaceful. One of the best stocked pantry and kitchen that we’ve ever seen. Great location for some of the best seafood restaurants. A must see is the Wild Oats Bakery in Brunswick. Everything we tried was fantastic. The windows were very clean for observing the cove. The beds were incredibly comfortable. If you cook, the gas stove is very powerful. A blender could be a lovely addition. Karen is a very responsive host. Hope to be back next year!

Great View and location
Lots of room and great view of the water. The Kayaks were also fun to use--but make sure you know how to handle the cold water if you should get in trouble. Beds were comfortable. No TV but there is Wifi. If you are looking for a place with a lot of polish, this is not it. Some aspects of the place are dated and not very well finished. If you want a good deal on a great location, you should come here!

Delightful Harpswell Haven
Very charming home right in Ash Point Cove on Casco Bay, with wonderful views from all areas of the house. Plenty of room to spread out in three main lower level rooms; dining area and two rooms for leisure activities. Plenty of sleeping space with Four bedrooms (including one spacious master w/ great sight lines of Bay) Great porch area to enjoy the Peace and quiet of the Cove and the area. Kayaks also were available for serene paddle around the cove. Very enjoyable stay with wonderful accommodations and location. Highly recommend this home and site.

Gorgeous Location
Lovely home in a very quiet setting. Well appointed, charming older home with spectacular views at any time of day. Well suited for quiet relaxation. Does require some planning as most services and attractions are miles away - but that's also part of the charm!

Peaceful Family Vacation
We just returned from a week at this idyllic home. The views and peaceful setting were wonderful - no speed boat, or jet ski noise. Our grandchildren (ages 12 and 9) loved going down to the shore at low tide to see what they could find. The house was a wonderful accommodation for the six of us with plenty of space. When we had a rainy day we were still able to be outside on the lovely porch overlooking the harbor of lobster boats. A short walk down the road and we were able to purchase fresh lobster on the dock right after a lobster boat returned with it's catch. We highly recommend this beautiful place.

Awesome relaxing vacation
This is the 2nd time we stayed at this property and I hope to go again next year. The house has a lot of space and great wifi to accommodate some of us who were spending a little time working remotely. The location could not be better with views from nearly every room. There were a few restaurants in the area that we tried, all of which were excellent: The Dolphin, Cook's Lobster and School House 1913. We went on the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust website and did a lot of the hikes in the area. We followed the owner's suggestion and got lobsters from Charlie down the street at the docks which were delicious. The owner was very responsive and it was great that the house had a lot of kitchen staples you could use for cooking if you forgot anything. I highly recommend this house if you are looking for the ultimate, relaxing Maine vacation on the water.

The Perfect Escape
Enjoyed a wonderful week at Ash Cove with family. Perfect fall weather for multiple local hikes, birding, and kayaking. The porch rockers were the favored seating for coffee at sunrise, cocktails at sunset, and for conversation and contemplation in between. The views are spectacular of the bay, and the house spacious, comfortable, and well equipped. Hope to visit again in another season to explore even more.

Wonderful place for a true getaway
My wife and I stayed here for a week getaway without the kids. We brought our dog and had a wonderful time! The home is warm and stocked with everything you need. The location is outstanding - beautiful water for boating, kayaking, relaxing, and about 10 minutes away from just about anything you need. Lobster shacks are within walking distance and big box retailers are less than 20 minutes away. The owners were amazing to deal with and we'd absolutely recommend the home to anyone looking to get away and relax in typical Maine fashion.

Spacious and Comfortable with Panoramic Ocean Views
This house is perfect for two families or one multi-generational family. We especially liked having two seating areas so that children/teenagers could have a separate area of their own. The four wonderful bedrooms all have views of Harpswell sound and access to ocean breezes. While the picture of one of the bedrooms on VRBO shows bunk beds, these have been replaced by a queen and a single, which we were happy about. The kitchen is well equipped and functional, and even has a coffee grinder, which was very useful. when my husband mistakenly bought whole bean coffee instead of ground. The view is great, and we spent many hours just sitting on the deck, enjoying the peace of the setting.

Maine Coastal Paradise
Seven days of sunshine, warm water, cool nights and laughter with friends and family. This was exactly what we were looking for. Lots of space, comfortable bedrooms, great yard for games, and direct access for paddling, swimming, or just floating. The porch! Anytime of day, morning coffee, lunch, happy hour, to star gazing. Five stars! We will be back! Thanks for everything!

Harpswell House on the Water
Our family of 5 loved staying at this house, which had everything we needed and plenty of space to enjoy the beautiful water views. We especially loved sitting in a rocking chair on the porch and kayaking in the ocean, which is steps away. Highly recommend this house for a getaway with plenty to do, but also great if you do nothing too!

Mesmerizing View
For a first trip to Maine, I think we picked a great house in a great community. Ash Cove Cottage has jutting out almost over the cove, with glass on three sides (master bedroom has the same view). You can watch spectacular sunrises, and the comings and goings of the lobstermen (actually there was a woman or two also). I'm so glad we picked a working harbor because there is alway activity. The house is a little rustic feeling on the inside, but in a charming way you'd expect a Maine cottage to be. The kitchen is really well equipped for people who want to cook. The covered porch is perfect for lazing the day away. We didn't use the kayaks ( a little windy/chilly for Southerners) but appreciated access. It was a couple days into our stay when we realized there were no TV's and didn't miss them a bit. Harpswell is a great community of different peninsulas and islands, full of great hikes, dramatic coastal scenery, and a handful of good restaurants. You'll be close to Brunswick which is a charming college town with a diverse selection of good restaurants. Don't miss the Bowdoin College Art Museum. If you are into hiking at any level, download the guide from the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust...you'll have your choice of about 15 trails.

Beautiful location and great family cottage
This property was just perfect for our family which included myself and husband my mom, my daughter and husband and their 3 year old daughter. The sunrises where breathtaking. Loved to sit on the porch overlooking the bay watching the boat activities while having morning coffee or an evening adult beverage. We used the kayaks several times to explore the bay and islands. There were a few great restaurants within a short distance but stock up on provisions for the house in Brunswick before you arrive. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking, dining area and living spaces accommodated our family with fantastic views. The beds were all very comfy. From this mid coast location we easily traveled to Portland for the mailboat ride, to Wiscasett & Damariscotta, and to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. Thanks for the great vacation location!

Peaceful and lobsterful !
What a great place to relax and watch the the sunrise over the morning glassy waters of the bay. Were up for a graduation so only 4 nights. Wish it were more for sure at this location. Whether it’s fresh lobster straight from the dock a stones throw up the street or a few minutes drive to great restaurants you can’t go wrong.

Spectacular water front views
Stayed here with my wife, two year old daughter, and in-laws in mid October 2018. The views from the relatively new addition are truely wonderful. The foliage was at peak color that week, and made for particularly nice traveling in the area. The house had plenty of space for 5 people, was pretty safe for a toddler, and the property around the house was very pretty. The older part of the house does feel dated, having been built in 1905. The floors creaked, and made moving around difficult while our daughter was napping. The kitchen is dated too, but well stocked, and we were able to prepare a number of nice dinners there. The restaurant Dolphin is only 10 minutes away, sits right on the water, and has very good food. There’s not a lot to do in Harpswell, save for a few walking trails, but it’s a great place if you just want to sit back and relax. Overall, an excellent Vacation rental.

Beautiful home in a relaxed waterfront setting
Our family of six, including four millenials, enjoyed the week of 4th of July at Ash Cove. There was plenty of room in the comfortable living room that faced the Cove on 3 sides, on the wrap-around porch that was our go-to in the morning and evenings, and at the dinner table. Beds and sleeping arrangements were great, although older guests will have to draw straws as to who sleeps in the 2 bunk beds! The setting could not be more beautiful--quiet, peaceful and right on the water. We brought our own kayaks and used the house kayaks as well, and walked to Potts Harbor down the road to get lobsters. Harpswell is a warm and vibrant community, with lectures/speakers, community band, jazz orchestra and woodwind group concerts in the summer. Near by, walkable ice cream and lobster roll venues made this just the right spot for our vacation. A lovely venue!

We loved the charm and location of you beautiful cottage. Sunsets were breathtaking.
Many memories were made on our vacation at Ash Cove. We experienced a “blood red” full moon, fireworks on the water and had our first family cornhole championship competition. So much fun. Your cottage was well stocked with all the necessities and it was very clean. Loved morning coffee on the front porch watching the lobster boats prepare for their day’s catch. We all were sad to leave!

About the host

Hosted by Karen Conniff

Host profile image
Dick and Karen grew up in New Jersey, and have lived in Connecticut for the past 36 years. Dick is a writer and Karen is a realtor.

Why they chose this property

Karen had summered in South Harpswell as a teenager across the cove, at the Auburn Colony. She introduced Dick to the area, and he, too, fell in love with it. They decided to find a house, here, for family get-togethers and quiet time away from busy lives.
We found our house after a year of searching. The proximity to the water and ability to moor a boat in deep water in front of the house attracted us. But the views are what sold us--incredible! Anyone who walks into the house says, "Wow! What a spot!" Sitting in the family room or in the master bedroom, you feel like you are on the prow of a boat, overlooking the cove.

What makes this property unique

The wrap-around porch is the one thing all our guests fall in love with. You can sit with your morning brew and watch the sun rise and the eagles, ospreys and herons fishing, or lounge all day watching the wildlife and reading a good book. As the days grow shorter in the late summer, the sunrises and sunsets get more colorful.
