About this property

TheManteoHouse-Downtown Social District&Waterfront

About this space
The Manteo House, locally referred to as the Evans Family Homeplace, boasts a unique blend of original 1871 elements such as wooden flooring, doors, window frames, and transoms, complemented by custom Honduran mahogany in its extended wings. Upon entering the main foyer, visitors are greeted with a harmonious fusion of antique charm and modern flair, featuring marble flooring, imported mahogany baseboards and ceiling trim, and a prized mid-1800s tiger oak entryway hutch.
The space
The Manteo House, approximately 5000 sqft of interior space, including 6 bedrooms, a den, parlor, formal dining room, breakfast nook, second-floor lounge, and 4 covered porches, one of which is screened. Situated on an acre of land surrounded by a white picket fence, the property is ideal for events or full-house rentals. BONUS - spacious gourmet kitchen!

The House was initially constructed for John Wesley Evans and his wife, Rosa Brinkley Evans; the property remained in the family for 150 years and was host to many Roanoke Island legacies. The 1st island school house, numerous weddings, church engagements, the business community and political events, to name a few. In the early 1900s, Asa Vincent Evans and his parents relocated from the original Tranquil House to this property where he grew up and was later appointed Postmaster General by President Franklin D Roosevelt. With so many local legacies and stories, we are working on the “History of” portal to be available soon! There are many spaces to relax in private, like the parlor, den, or expansive porches. Grab a rocking chair and enjoy the grounds or walk the town.

The Manteo House is known for expressing a very comfortable and calm “feel” regardless of where you are on the property. This makes it a perfectly picturesque location for private events, a relaxing place to stay whiten, or even an ideal destination for corporate retreats and team-building excursions.
Guest access
You will have access to all three levels of The Manteo House with the exception of locked owners closets, pantry of kitchen, & Evans Room at ground level.

*Special Discount for our guests on beach rental supplies & set up between Duck to South Nags Head! Any Questions - please ask your host!

Other things to note
Should you find your self needing additional space for two more adults, there is a studio located above the garage, Sir Walter Hideaway. This space can be found by going to your Host, Gia's Profile.

The Parlor - located at ground level in the West Wing 1871 portion of the home - is a popular location to host artists, musicians, comedians etc. During your stay you may be able to take advantage and purchase tickets for such an event happening next door or at the very least walk a few more steps to The Pioneer Theater for a varied line-up of events and happenings!

Stay among the stars...here are some of the special guests we have hosted at The Manteo House: Ashley Chevalier, Pressley Barker, Caroline Owens, Hawthorne Heights Band, Huntley ('23 winner of The Voice), Bill Baronkay (Comedian), Kevin Farley (Comedian), The Wildwoods Trio, The LandSharks Band, Rhonda Vincent's Band, Diamonds and Whiskey Band, Terrence Simien Band!

Why they chose this property

Manteo, the heart of Roanoke Island, is the center of visitor activity. To call this small coastal town on the protected Shallowbag Bay picturesque doesn’t do it justice. The marina and waterfront, the replica Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, and the slow, quiet residential streets surrounding the community’s core are beautiful enough to persuade more than a few visitors to move here. Incorporated in 1899 and named for Chief Manteo of the Croatan Native American Tribe – Chief Manteo, along with his counterpart, Chief Wanchese, toured England after English explorers arrived and friendly relations were established – it’s a town with a history tied to The Lost Colony of Roanoke and to the bounty of the waters around.

Families here fished and farmed for a living, a story more fully told at Island Farm and at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum where you can get a look at some of the boats designed and built especially for these waters.

Wherever you stay, you’ll be a short walk to the waterfront, where it’s possible to board a sailboat, catamaran, or pleasure cruiser for a sunset tour, a dolphin watch, or a little bit of both with some local legends and lore threw in for good measure. You can also find a fishing charter that’ll pick you up here. Still, most of those depart out of the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, Pirate’s Cove Marina, and other area marinas in the neighboring village of Wanchese; still, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Across the bay from the Manteo waterfront is Roanoke Island Festival Park, home to several festivals and gatherings each year, plus a museum, costumed interpreters showing what the early colonists had to contend with when establishing their lives here, and the Elizabeth II, a full-scale replica of the ships that brought those colonists to our shores. Climb aboard, get a look at the accommodations these men and women lived in for their journey west from England, and marvel at their mettle.
