About this property

Historic retreat on two grassy acres water views

Summary:
A stunning home, the 1890 Farmhouse is a tranquil retreat. Set on two grassy acres with Corrotoman River views, it offers a dreamlike haven where you can relax with friends or reclaim family time. Carefully furnished, colorful and playful roodms. Enjoy the shared dock and riverside firepit. Launch kayaks or float in tubes. And when you feel like exploring, the charming coastal towns of Irvington, White Stone, and Kilmarnock are within minutes and promise unforgettable Northern Neck adventures.

The Space:
Rituals of "the long weekend" are a thing of family folklore. We poach eggs, visit farmer's stands, and enjoy every lunch as a picnic. We take country walks, start an ambitious puzzle, tether together for sunset floats, and end the day on the screened porch with the perfect G+T to cap our day.

For those cozy moments of laidback living, 1890 farmhouse's light-filled living room is impossible to resist. A soothing space with country views, it promises pure comfort and your choice of two cozy couches where you can immerse in the pages of your latest read or gather for cocktails and conversation. For even more comfort is a large armchair, while for added entertainment, a wall-mounted Smart TV offers ample choice for movie nights at home.

A recently refreshed kitchen lends itself perfectly to preparing delicious meals and memories, whether it’s making them yourself or letting others make them happen for you. Dressed in soft grey and featuring white marble countertops and open shelves, it imbues a timeless country cottage-feel refined with modern details and accouterments. For dreamy morning rituals or afternoon pick-me-ups, you can also find a Nespresso coffee machine.

One bedroom resides on the first floor and features a King bed with a mattress our guests rave about, dressed in the softest sheets. For privacy, this bedroom also benefits from its own ensuite bathroom with shower and separate outside entrance plus small sun patio.

A second King bedroom rests upstairs and enjoys beautiful, vibrant colors. A large chest of drawers provides space for stowing belongings, while windows frame captivating countryside vistas beyond.
For refreshing mornings and bubble-topped soaks after days on the river, the family bathroom is shared by the second floor rooms.

Down the corridor is a most charming Twin room with a “princess and the pea” style mattress. Don’t miss the stocked puzzles - games - crafts - books closet on the way.

A fourth, Full + Twin bedroom is also upstairs. Perfect for a small family or late night girlfriend chats. Can you find the secret reading nook ready for your family bookworm?

Step outside to uncover a pretty rolling lawn set on two acres. At the rear of the home awaits both a screened porch and sun patio, with the addition of an outdoor BBQ. Relax on the manicured lawn with a picnic spread, gather around the outdoor dining table for seafood feasting, or challenge someone to a game of horseshoes or corn hole. Then venture beyond to explore the riverfront shared facilities. A vintage shed hosts an array of kid and adult kayaks, floats that snap together, an anchor and more. Pile the watercraft and toys into the car for a short drive over to the dock.

River Access
In less than 60 seconds, take the shortest drive up to the shared shoreline of the Corrotoman where you can play, swim, float, and kayak in shallow waters. There is a pier-to-water ladder for easy entrance and exit (no diving please, feet first always). Enjoy the Adirondacks by the oversized fire pit and truly the best sunsets in the Northern Neck. This area is dedicated for homeowners and their guests only.

Be sure to ask about our private chef, and the great experiences with which we have partnered for discounts for our guests! Sailing cruises, power boat charters, in-home massage, sound baths, and aerial and mat yoga classes.

The 1890 Farmhouse offers the best of both worlds – a countryside and a riverside vacation less than two hours from Richmond or three hours from Washington, DC. Lovely in every season, we are happy to craft a perfect itinerary for family, friends, or couples alike. Timeless charm just moments from the water’s edge. Welcome to the 1890 Farmhouse. Save to your favorites now!

Guest Access:
Guests enjoy access to the entire property as well as the community waterfront, dock, and fire pit.

The Neighborhood:
Virginia’s Northern Neck is a peninsula surrounded by unique and beautiful marshes, creeks, the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay, so water views are all around you. When the weather is fair, you’ll find lots of opportunities to get out on the water. Rent a kayak at a local PaddleOn kiosk or a canoe or kayak at one of the state parks to explore smaller marshes and creeks. Arrange a fishing charter or a scenic river cruise on the Rappahannock, or cruise across the bay to remote Tangier Island for fresh blue crabs and a look at the watermen’s life. We love to walk along the Bay at Hughlett Point Nature Preserve in Kilmarnock. Dine on Carter’s Creek at the fancy Tides Inn restaurant Salt and Meadow or relax at their casual creekside Oyster bar The Fish Hawk.

OYSTERS: Virginia is the largest producer of fresh-wild catch and farm-raised oysters in the country. Oysters are farmed year-round, and they actively filter the water they are grown in. Each region produces oysters with distinct flavors, from briny to sweet, and they all pair well with the native Virginia wines you can find at Northern Neck wineries. Want fresh local oysters in the shells delivered to the refrigerator? We partner with the Steamboat Wharf Oyster Company, a family-owned business dedicated to growing a damn good oyster. They take pride in offering high-quality, sustainably sourced Top Shelf oysters. More information on this special service in our Welcome Guide when you book!

WINERIES Several local wineries are on the Chesapeake Wine Trail. Try the estate grown wines at Good Luck Cellars in Kilmarnock (we love the white variety Baleen Beauty). The veranda is a lovely place to sit and listen to music on the weekends. There is a corn hole game on the lower lawn. Don't miss Friday night line dancing, and maybe you will see some of the winery dogs around. They protect the vines. We also like Triple V Farm in Heathsville (They also produce vinegar and vodka!).

ART: Fancy some culture not of the aqua variety? Visit the Rappahannock Art League in Kilmarnock, Allure Art Center in White Stone, or take in a show at the Lancaster Playhouse. We even have an orchestra in these parts.

ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX: For rainy days (or any day!), head over to Compass Entertainment in nearby Irvington. This amusement center has indoor arcade games, putt-putt, a climbing wall, a movie theater, a bar, a restaurant, and more. Kids of all ages love it!

IRVINGTON:

TRAILS:

You may also enjoy exploring the Northern Neck's many designated "Trails," such as the Oyster Trail, the Wine Trail, the Water Trail, the Artisan Trail and, not to be outdone, the Coastal Waterfowl Trail.

Getting Around:
A car is necessary. Bring bikes if you wish! Book a sailing charter to see the area from the water. We love Sail and Surf Adventures. Discount available after booking.
