About the host
Hosted by Tim Austin
My family moved from NW Tennessee to Paonia in 1970. Our family roots were firmly in agriculture for centuries, as far back as we can find. The TN family farm has been in the Austin family since the late 1700s.
I graduated from Paonia High School in 1980 and worked in one of the local coal mines paying my way through college. That coal mine happened to be the owner of the current Fort Austin property. Westmoreland Coal Company built a train loadout facility right across the highway and operated it until the massive coal silos were removed in the 1990s.
Fort Austin is likely my last major construction project. Throughout the 1990s I was a general contractor and custom home builder in Colorado Springs. I owned different companies in real estate services, construction, structural steel, heavy equipment refinishing and marketing. Truly, Fort Austin is my favorite project of all.
After 10 years of hard work, the construction is nearly completed. Now I get to concentrate on hosting guests in the cabins and deluxe suites and hosting events in the venue.
To some degree, guests get to choose how much interaction they have with the host. When I am around I enjoy smoking a cigar, sipping a beer, sitting around the fire and engaging in conversation with most guests. I have met incredible guests whose life stories are inspiring and interesting.
Come sit a spell. Kick up your feet. Relax and Enjoy. And just BE. At Fort Austin, you do you. Or just sit and BE. After all, we are human beings, not human doings.
