This newly renovated cottage is located atop a hill overlooking the Wild and Scenic Westfield River surrounded by state forest and protected land. Wildlife abounds and we are a birder's haven. Many a morning you can watch mist arising from the river. Walk out the door to hike, mountain bike, snowshoe, or ski in the woods. Groomed cross country ski trails are nearby. Notchview Reservation, 20 minutes away has in my opinion the best XC skiing in Western Massachusetts. We are located midway between The Berkshires with its many cultural activities and the Pioneer Valley, home to the Five Colleges: U Mass, Smith, Amherst, Mt Holyoke, and Hampshire College. The cottage sleeps four (1 BR for 2, 2 built-in twins by the wood stove). The kitchen is fully equipped. We have installed an ethernet cable which brings the broadband service directly to the Cottage. The Connection is flawless. The owner lives on the property in the main home near to the cottage.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful home! It had everything we needed including a quiet, peaceful, private, beautiful location, comfortable bed, great books!!, and a well equipped kitchen. We are very grateful you had availability for our Thanksgiving visit with family. Thank you!!
We had a most peaceful long weekend at The Clearing. There was a small nearby market that had just about everything we needed to cook the meals we planned to make. A crisp, warm fall weekend allowed for a lovely hike at the Gorge, many wonderful meals in a quaint, modern kitchen, and just lots of QUIET! We heard a coyote or wolf howl one night! The best feature was definitely the wood stove for the cooler nights. I loved that!!
What a beautiful weekend at a remarkable, remote spot. There is a full in ground pool - so I think a summer visit is up next. The host was amazing! Communicative and very personable. We loved our stay!
It was a treat being in the country where it was quiet and restful. It was a bit to get used to driving on Mt roads , especially at night. A new challenge for these low country folks. We loved the cottage. Perfect size.
Such a lovely and peaceful property! Very comfortable living space with a lovely pool and a long view of the sunrise over the hills of western MA. The hosts, who live next door were very kind. I highly recommend this place.
As advertised, it's a quiet and peaceful property well off the beaten track. Loved the birds in the morning, the pool, the view. The hosts were generous and thoughtful and a big help when we had an issue with our car! Loved it.
I think this was my seventh time staying at The Clearing. That tells you all you need to know! John and Joyce and this special property never disappoint.
John’s place is wonderful. The cottage is very clean and has all the necessities. Access to the pool was a big plus for my family, and we got to pick wild blackberries on the property. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming. We highly recommend this place!
This place is so incredibly quiet and peaceful we didn’t want to leave. The quaint house has everything you need to relax and unwind.
Lots of small villages and parks to visit nearby with good places to eat and a convenient little market just minutes away. Don’t miss the drive to the gorge just 2 miles away, breathtaking!
John and Joyce are great hosts, loved learning a little history about the farm.
Tucked away and yet convenient to all the Berkshires have to offer. Rustic, well-appointed. No TV - which proved an unexpected plus! Friendly host. Perfect for a few people for a few days.
Beautiful location! So relaxing, peaceful and quiet. We had exciting visits during our stay. Around property we saw porcupine, a black bear in the distance, deers and a coyote. Adorable chipmunks sprinted by and sounds of echoing birds. Would love to visit again and know where to stay.
This is by far the best place I have stayed in all of my app rentals.
The house is clean and cosy and spacious. The grounds are so peaceful. I was in the area to work so was only able to enjoy the evenings and early mornings but I plan to book again and bring my husband. Honestly I may see what it’s like in all seasons.
I had warm evenings and was able to enjoy a dip in the pool to cool off. It’s paradise! The hosts, John and his wife, are very kind and happy to answer questions and provide recommendations in the area.
If you are looking for a fantastic getaway and enjoy the sound of birds and the breeze this is it.
If you’re looking for the perfect balance of solitude and easy access to the abundant beauty of Western Mass, The Clearing is as close to perfection as I can imagine. Hosts John and Joyce were lovely and very helpful. The cottage itself was not too big, not too small and equipped with idyllic rural accents…a wood stove, a rocking chair, and a screened porch from which one can observe the sun rising and setting on a distant, forested mountain. Will return. Often.
The Clearing is clean and comfortable. It has a lovely location in a clearing in the woods. From the screened in porch you can hear waterfalls and smell the fresh air. We slept well in comfort and quiet. Thank you to our hosts!
We could not have asked for a more peaceful weekend experience. Joyce and John are incredibly gracious hosts. It's amazing that they are willing to share this gorgeous property with the rest of the world. Fresh air, night skies, nature, and silence. You'll leave energised for sure!
