About this property

Charming single storey barn Dordogne/Charente border

Nestling on the hillside between the picturesque Roman villages of Bouteilles and St Paul de Lizonne, in a pretty and interesting corner of rural south west France, this former tobacco farm has been lovingly restored, retaining a traditional French country feel. Centred around a shaded courtyard, L’Erable is a charming conversion of one of the ancient single storey barns, sitting alongside the main farmhouse inhabited by ourselves.
L’Erable is an immaculately presented, light and airy house radiating warmth and a friendly atmosphere. The carefully designed interior centres around the extensively equipped farmhouse kitchen. Attractively furnished to compliment the many traditional country features inc. beams and mellow stone walls. French doors permit the sun and warmth to filter in from the courtyard, benefiting from two pretty terraces, back and front, both with comfortable furniture on which to enjoy the tranquil country surroundings.

BEACHES AND WATER PARK: River beaches: Aubeterre which is 8 miles away has a lovely river beach with grassed play area, cafe and restaurant. St Aulaye (14 miles) has the same, together with water slides! Water park: 40 mins away in Augouleme, Nautilis water park with 50m indoor pools, diving pools, outdoor and indoor slides, wave machines. Large lake for fishing & water sports

SAINT SEVERIN: Situated just 3km from Saint Severin, where you will find all the usual village shops, butchers and bakers, as well as grocers, bank, chemist, newsagents, Post Office, doctors etc - not forgetting 3 bars/cafés and small family hotel with restaurant.

A HIDDEN GEM
Tucked away in its own grounds along with the owners house, and hidden from the road, makes this a real hidden gem and so private it seems like the rest of the world doesn't exist. Nigel & Lisa couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful throughout, and kept the place spotless, and the welcome 'goodies' were delicious - the pool was amazing, with a 10ft (approx) deep end but sloping up to shallows well suitable for children. The house & especially the kitchen was so well equipped and by far the best property we have stayed at in France, (and this is the 20th time over 30 years we have self catered there). The region itself is tranquil and beautiful, with so many lovely towns and villages within easy reach, our favourite being Aubeterre (one of the top 100 beautiful towns in France) where lunch is a must. There is a great Bolangerie (and well equipped Spar shop) just up the road in St. Saverin, with Riberac just 15mins away for supermarkets and a brilliant Friday market. Many thanks to Nigel & Lisa making our holiday so special, and look forward to seeing you again.

Superb! A relaxing swimmers’ paradise
We had an amazing stay at Nigel and Lisa’s gîte. It had everything we needed and Nigel and Lisa were the perfect hosts. As a keen swimmer, the pool is the cleanest I’ve swam in and has a deep end for diving. It’s a very peaceful and relaxing environment and just a short drive to some pretty towns and river beaches. Our girls particularly enjoyed the beach at Lac Jamaye with its free kayak and paddle board activities. Coffee and milkshakes at the up cycling cafe in St Severin also went down a treat!! We holiday in France a lot and It’s the best property we have stayed in. Thank you!

Excellent stay in a peaceful property
Outstanding gite. Our family of five found only one 'problem' during our two-week stay. Was it the view? Nope. The view was lovely from the very peaceful terrace. Pool was large, warm, private and sheltered, with a great deep end, with also shaded areas to read and sunny areas to lounge on unbroken, comfy sun loungers and soak up the sun. Japanese garden quirky, with many other places outside to sit. Kitchen spacious and had everything we needed (save for one thing). Beds comfy and there was a range of pillows. The sitting room comfortably would fit six film watchers. The owners had just updated the TV and so we briefly seemed to lose satellite telly to watch the Women's Euros, but that problem was quickly remedied. But it would be best to ask Nigel about the tv/dvd situation. It was fine for us. We watched Netflix. Dining table comfortably fit six diners, as would the terrace area, which was well enough lit to play board games at night. There is enough area to play badminton and to kick a ball around. Local village of St Severin is 7 minutes by car and sells most things in a (very friendly) Spar shop, and has restaurants and bars (not tried). Riberac is 15 mins away for larger supermarkets and more restaurants and bars. Angouleme is 45 minutes away. Perigueux is also 45 mins away and prettier but slightly smaller than Angouleme. The market at Chalais on a Monday will set you up for cold meat and cheese, plus lots of cheap summer clothes, trinkets, English novels, good lunch. The owners of the gite are incredibly responsive, friendly and discreet. They dealt with all issues immediately (but the issues were not about anything wrong; there was never anything wrong). We and our three daughters (15, 17, 19) really enjoyed the very peaceful, roomy, friendly atmosphere and comfy gite. Wi-Fi good. Negatives? We've stayed in many French properties over the years and this was the best. It is more geared towards older teenagers than younger children. It didn't have as many outdoor games or indoor board games or books as some places, but we always come prepared anyway. The only criticism was the lack of cereal bowls. (They had pasta bowls but only one cereal bowl.) So, if it's a surfeit of cereal bowls you are after, try somewhere else. But if it is a very peaceful and comfortable gite representing excellent value for money with really good hosts that you would be genuinely tempted to return to again and again, try this place out.

Lovely stay
We had a lovely stay with Nigel and Lisa. Two kind people who are very helpful. The house was perfect for the four of us. Our little kids (4,5 and 1,5) had a blast, especially the pool was a big bonus. Very quiet surroundings. We would definitely recommand.

Gorgious holidays, wonderful host

Peaceful Bliss
After an horrendous journey we were so relieved to see L'Erable looked as pretty as it does it the pictures. Lovely welcome pack including some lovely white wine chilling nicely in the huge American style fridge, within 10 minutes we had forgotten all about the awful journey. As previous people have said the kitchen is so well equipped with every thing you could possibly need ! Lovely large pool which is not overlooked so nice and private. All in all a wonderful place to stay and we will be back :-) L & G - Surrey

Peace & Quiet
Have been coming to this area of France for the last 10 years and the last 3 years we have stayed at L'Erable! Can't say much more than has already been said, wonderfully equipped and great to have the 3 bathrooms. Probably the cleanest pool we have ever used and very private. As previous people have said, Linda and Nigel are on hand if needed but very discreet. Yes we will be coming back :-)

Lovely well equipped property.
This property provides you with everything needed to ensure a great stay. The kitchen is very well equipped with two ovens and a big fridge/freezer which is great when there are six people. It also provides cold filtered water and ice cubes which we made great use of. The pool area offers sun and shade which was great as the weather was hot. The surrounding towns offer nice days out if you want to leave the house and pool. We would love to go back, which we rarely want to do.

Do we really have to go home??
What a lovely surprise awaited us in France, this must be the nicest property we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in quite a few on our many trips to France. The Barn was absolutely beautiful, from the furnishings, the huge TV, lovely bedrooms and bathrooms, all we could have hoped for and then some. Linda and Nigel have thought of everything, some things we needn't have taken with us. The kitchen was more than well equipped for all of our meals, a fantastic fridge freezer so plenty of cold water and ice on hand. Linda and Nigel were around whenever we needed to ask a question but never invaded our space. The pool was brilliant, warm and clean with plenty of sun-loungers for that serious order of the day - sun bathing! They also provided a really lovely welcome pack for us with wine, butter, fruit and jam, totally unexpected but very welcome indeed :-) A real home from home and a place which we would highly recommend and somewhere we hope to return to. Thank you again Linda and Nigel for making our holiday so enjoyable. Jan and Rob Page

Perfection!
We stayed here for two weeks but would have quite happily stayed much longer. This immaculate house is in a lovely, peaceful location with Nigel and Linda on hand next door should anything be needed. However, they are totally discreet and will not intrude. They have managed to provide a beautiful holiday home with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. They really have thought of everything! We have stayed in various holiday homes in France and they were all lovely but this is exceptional! Should we stay in this area again we wouldn't hesitate to re-book.

Super holiday house - highly recommended
The other reviews of L'Erable convinced us to book the house for our holiday this year and we were not disappointed. We can certainly confirm that L'Erable's facilities are as good as advertised and we were not disappointed in any way (except for the unseasonable cool weather, sadly). An extra facility that we discovered was the recently installed wi-fi which kept my ipad-using daughters happy. Nigel and Linda were great hosts providing advice about the local area (and a v. interesting look at Nigel's studio). Highly recommended - we tend to move around when booking holidays but if we decided to come back to this area, L'Erable would certainly be our first choice.

September 2010
My family and I stayed for two weeks in September 2010, we had the most amazing holiday, the house was beautiful and had everything that we could have needed and more. The scenery and location are stunning and everyone in the surrounding villages and shops were polite and helpful. It was a pleasure to meet Nigel and Linda who were very accomodating and informative but yet respected our privacy at all times. I have already recommended L'Erable to many of my friends and will be returning very soon for another relaxing holiday.

Our holiday
We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful house. Perfect by Linda and Nigel reception. We got a nice tour and a chilled bottle of wine. Perfectly maintained home. The beautiful swimming pool maintenance and beautiful garden with terraces were added for the children and ourselves. Nigel Thank you for the nice tips for excursions in the region. A beautiful holiday home. Sincerely Peter and Heidi

Superb holiday!
We stayed in this property for 2 weeks and loved every minute of it. The house is the best that we have stayed in and far exceeded all of our expectations. It is superbly equipped, comfortable, spacious and clean. The pool is fantastic and very private. We cannot recommend this property highly enough, in fact we have already booked to go again for 2 weeks next year!

Fabulous Dordogne Holiday, Highly Recommended
We are a family of five, with three energectic teenagers, and spent a fabulous week at l'Erable in August. Linda and Nigel, the owners, made us feel very welcome and at ease there. The house, garden, pool and location are all absolutely stunning. The house is beautifully restored and all furniture, fittings and equipment provided are of the highest quality. It was especially good to have the use of such a great kitchen, unlike some we have experienced in the past, and the bathrooms too were all superb - very clean and a pleasure to use. The garden and pool furniture was all of a good quality too, with a very nice dining area outside and plenty of sun loungers and parasols to go round. We would definitely recommend L'Erable to friends and family, and wish we had had two weeks there instead of one! Thank you, Linda and Nigel for providing such a great holiday for us!

Two week holiday July/August 2010
Choosing accommodation on the basis of website information can be a bit of a lucky dip; sometimes the reality is far different from the grand description! In the case of L'Erable high quality accommodation was described and was more than delivered. Rest assured that if like us, you look for great specification then you will not be disappointed. We particularly enjoyed the setting. Although the owners' house is on site, the barn is in no way overlooked and since Linda and Nigel take great care to keep a low key presence, you get the impression of having the whole place to yourself. The outdoor space is expansive. The large and sunny patio to the rear was a great place to relax in the evening and played host to many a barbeque. The large swimming pool is sited to get the best of the sunshine throughout the day and evening and importantly, is completely secluded. L'Erable is well situated for access to the many beautiful villages and towns in the area, none of which are more than 45 minutes drive away. We enjoyed visits to Perigeux and Brantome and canoed down the Dronne from the fantastic village of Aubeterre. Even given the poor exchange rate, dining out was at reasonable cost and the local food was excellent. As a family we can recommend this holiday experience without reservation. The owners are friendly, helpful and informative, the setting is very quiet, access to the area is good and most of all the accommodation is first rate.

A wonderful week
The moment we walked into Linda and Nigel's charming barn, we knew we were in for a treat. Everything was just as we hoped it would be. And more. The house is beautifully and tastefully designed. The kitchen comes straight out of an Ikea catalogue - gleaming white, top quality appliances and every utensil you could think of waiting to be discovered in the drawers. The sitting room/lounge is wonderful. There is a library of books and a CD collection guaranteed to relax and soothe the soul. The bedrooms were lovely and cool, the furniture was of an excellent standard and the bathrooms were of 5 star quality. The pool was gorgeous. Large umbrellas shaded the comfy, cushioned lounge chairs which surrounded the pool. The area around the pool was beautifully manicured. The countryside around the house was fabulous. We were surrounded by sunflowers, hay fields and scenic walks. Saint Severin, a village nearby, held such delights as warm croissants and cafe au lait. Aubeterre sur dronne has a lovely lake beach, and we spent many a happy hour relaxing by the water. Linda and Nigel were extremely helpful - always available for advice but never intrusive. Lovely lovely people. They made us feel very welcome. We will definitely return to this beautiful house, and would recommend this beautiful property without hesitation.
