Country Livin' close to town

This was such a great spot - barely outside the south end of town but feeling like you are in the country. House was very well appointed, spacious, with a very updated feel. I would definitely stay there again!

Family weekend

This was our second visit to the farm house and it again was a great experience. It’s a beautiful and peaceful place for a family getaway. It’s so close to everything but in a quiet setting. They have thought of every detail.

Wonderful, charming place to stay!

This is such an adorable house and great place to stay. Host is quick to respond and eager to make your stay seamless. House is very clean and stocked with all the essentials plus many more things. We loved the coffee bar. Quiet surroundings allowing us to escape the college crowd but still be close to visit campus. Would love to stay here again.

Wonderful Visit

We had a great time at the homestead! We loved that we were very close to downtown Lawrence, but could also experience some quiet downtime on the lovely front porch. The coffee set up was really cute and the home had everything we needed.

Lawrence Country House

The beds were very comfortable, would have preferred a Barbeque grill instead of a smoker, managers responded very quickly with answers to our questions, high marks for the coffee/tea area off the kitchen, and a great place to be if you want to be in the country but close to town. We have stayed in a lot of VRBO houses and we give it an A++.

Nice house

The place is great. Plenty of room, nice and quiet, and beautiful land. It was an excellent house for us to rent with our friends as we dropped our sons off at college. We will try and stay there again.

A great retreat

A family get together for a couple of days. The property is easy to find. It was interesting to find out about this historic property. The house was renovated and yet they kept the old farmhouse flavor! Enjoyed sitting on the wide front porch. Close to Lawrence so it was easy to find places to eat

Historical home very convenient to the town of Lawrence.

Wonderful accommodations. House is 140+ years old and charming. Beautiful large front porch to sit and drink your coffee in the mornings. Walking distance to Baker Wetlands. House is within a minute’s drive to Lawrence so it is very convenient but feels like you are in the country.

Family weekend

This property is beautiful and had everything we needed for our family. We especially loved the extra touches, such as the coffee bar set up. We loved sitting in the front porch in the morning. The bedrooms were spacious with comfortable beds. The location was perfect since it was within a few minutes of our college daughter’s apartment but away from the business of town.Thank you so much. We will be back!

Thanksgiving Weekend

We arrived on Tuesday night and stayed through Sunday late afternoon. We had Thanksgiving dinner at the property with 7 adults and everything we needed was available. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils pots, pans, dishes, silverware, etc. The stove, oven and microwave are all in great condition and made the meal prep a breeze. The dining room is a great size and has plenty of table space and chairs for up to 8 people. The beds are memory foam and comfortable. The house was extremely clean with plenty of towels etc. While we were there it snowed pretty heavily and the owners came by without disruption and put salt on the walking paths for safety which was nice. The grounds of the home are well maintained and very cool, its like staying on an old farm. Our flight back home on Sunday kept getting pushed back, I asked the home owner Dani if it would be okay to stay past the normal 10am check out and how much it would be to do that if possible and she was so nice. She said since there was nobody coming in that day we could stay as long as necessary at no charge. I really appreciated her hospitality, it made our departure so much better! We really enjoyed our stay and will come back.

Amazing country home, just minutes from everything. Gotta see this rare find!!

The Meairs’ 2-story, newly renovated heritage home was perfect! Absolutely fabulous hosts with lightning response time to messages. The upstairs bathroom was HUGE and WAYYY better than any hotel accommodation! The large shower was a highlight and the soak tub was appreciated by our sore players. Coffee bar was amazing with a selection of several coffees to brew in the Ninja coffeemaker. There were lots of spices and a full kitchen wonderfully outfitted for cooking and enjoying our meals. We got permission to host the rest of our volleyball team a few hours during our long break and enjoyed both inside gaming on the huge smart TV and playing in the huge yard outside! We sat, talked, and enjoyed both the front porch and back patio areas. Air mattress was perfect in the upstairs office (which counted as one of the beds on the listing. Bunk beds would fit great in that room, actually.) Towels were plenty and plush and the mattresses and linens were all high quality. No one had any complaints! Attention was given to signage, labeling and just every small detail! Well water was nicely treated, and but Again there was no locks on the (only downstairs) bedroom. This home has no en-suite bathrooms. Downstairs bathroom (shower only) is in the enclosed back porch, but is nicely climate controlled. Considering all, including the easy 5-8 minute access to Walmart and many in-town amenities and restaurants, we will definitely wanna stay here again next year for our tournament.

About the host

Hosted by Danielle Flory

Host profile image
I am originally a Missouri girl, but moved here after meeting my husband 6 years ago. My favorite daily activity is spending time with my 2 year old, and helping my husband around his family’s farm. I have loved hosting this VRBO and hearing where our guests are from and what brought them to town.

Why they chose this property

We actually have farmed the land north of the Wakarusa River for years, and had the opportunity to purchase the home a couple of years ago. We bought the home from Billy Meairs, whose grandparents homesteaded the land in 1854. We decided the home and property had way too much charm and history to not jump on board with a short term rental. We loved the access to town, yet the fact that we were still in a more tucked away peaceful area.

What makes this property unique

Our property is unique in all the history that it holds. It was a part of Quantrill’s path during his raid in 1863. The original house was lit on fire, but not destroyed, but then in 1878 the original Meairs family built the home guests stay in now. The home has had few major changes since its start, making it so fun to learn about!
