About this property

Secluded 1840's Log cabin Between Gettysburg, Lancaster, And Baltimore

Cozy log cabin on 65 acres with a large porch, two bedrooms (one with queen bed with sitting area, and one with two single beds) and a queen size futon in the living room. Nestled by a babbling brook, it is a quiet retreat for writing, knitting, star-gazing and bird watching. A home cleaned with environmentally friendly cleansers, with sheets and towels line dried, and a breakfast of farm fresh eggs, muffins and fruit will bring a sense of peace to all guests. We prefer 24 hour notice, but understand that travel does not always allow for this. We have a marked hiking trail and a full 18 hole Disc Golf course on site for guest use.

Wonderful place!
We enjoyed our quick weekend getaway that was close to home, yet so far away! Our daughter is leaving for her Spring semester in college in Texas so we wanted to have family time prior to her leaving. We were able to have fun, play games, venture/hike the property, go into town for pizza, and talked without distractions. The house is immaculate and comfortable. Highly recommend the cabin. The owners are also extremely nice and communicative. Lovely stay! The Vidrine’s

Quiet Fall Escape
Beautiful Historic home nestled down a quiet lane with nature all around. This is the perfect place to stay if you want to escape the fast paced and chaotic world we live in. This is a place to go to if you want to refresh and recharge your soul. The home is well kept, charming, cozy, and stocked with everything you would need. We felt at home and so comfortable. The hosts were attentive, gracious and helpful…and great with communication from first booking to the day we left. We appreciated the many special touches, from fresh fruit and wine left for us to enjoy, wild flowers picked just for us, and warm home baked muffins brought to us our first morning to enjoy with our coffee. We truly enjoyed the few days we spent in this home and could not think of a single complaint.

Cozy and Quiet
Home is just as charming as the hosts. David and Helen went out of their way to welcome me and checked in with me during my stay. I was able to work during the day thanks to a dependable internet connection and enjoy quiet and relaxing evenings with the sound of the small stream out front. Highly recommend!

Absolutely lovely!
My mom and I absolutely loved staying at the chicken coop! The house was VERY clean and cozy. David and Helen were amazing hosts- they very graciously left us cookies, wine, and strawberries to enjoy. They proactively checked on us to make sure we were comfortable, and promptly replied when we had any questions. The property was beautiful, with lots of space to explore the outdoors! I would highly recommend staying at this lovely rental.

Home Away from Home
My partner and I stayed on this beautiful property for two tranquil nights. It was quiet, beautiful, and now our new getaway! Eggs in the fridge, fresh cookies & fruit, and daily muffin deliveries are just the beginning of the amazing courtesies provided by the Tuten family. David and Helen were gracious, flexible hosts, delivering kindness and comfort. And I haven't even mentioned the on-property disc golf course...it's challenging, imaginative, and now one of our favorites we've ever played!

Perfect girls weekend getaway
Our group of 4 (me, my mom, my aunt, and my cousin) just spent a long weekend at the Chicken Coop and we LOVED it! Helen and David are fantastic hosts, easy to contact before and during the trip with any questions (especially helpful while traveling during Covid), with above and beyond hospitality. Yes there really are fresh muffins for breakfast and they are delicious! The house was very clean- and believe me we are picky with that, mom owns a cleaning business, the kitchen is very well stocked for cooking- they had everything we needed for cooking most of our meals there, and the beds were comfortable- i think we all agreed they were more comfortable than our own beds at home haha. Most importantly is the peace and quiet, scenery, and privacy this property offers, a true getaway from the busy-ness of life. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip back to this area, hopefully next fall!

Paradise Found
From the moment I first reached out to the owners, to the last drive out their private lane, it was perfect. Honestly, I’m afraid to say too much for fear we’ll never find a vacancy again at “1840 House”. The listing is very accurate and the owners will most certainly fill in any blanks. Their attention to details such as complimentary fresh eggs and homemade muffins or ample linens and kitchen staples, were greatly appreciated and above and beyond in the VRBO universe. My only complaint was not of their making, Verizon cell service is not supported in their valley, but the house WIFI works great! We will be back most certainly. If there’s a vacancy.

Great, relaxing get away
Helen and David's place was perfect for a nice secluded get away, especially during Covid. They provided fresh eggs and fruit and delivered fresh muffins in the morning. The outdoor and screened in porches provided nice places to relax in any weather. Would highly recommend for anyone trying to disconnect and relax for a few days.

About the host

Hosted by Helen and David Tuten

Host profile image
We have been married for almost 40. We raised our three children in this small farm house, treasuring every moment. The woods, the trails, the stream served as back drop to their home-schooled education. Healthy foods, lots of time outside and hours of reading on the porches filled our days. David is a retired high school math and science teacher and Helen is a retired pediatric physical therapist. Living just up the hill from the farm house, we are deeply rooted to the farm. We spend our time gardening, biking on a tandem, hiking, playing disc golf, knitting and reading. We love sharing the farm with our guests. It has been a joy to meet so many wonderful people from all around the world.

Why they chose this property

This farm house is the perfect place to be to re-connect with the sense of peace and tranquility we all crave. Nestled in the valley where no other houses can be seen, quiet can seep deeply. The woods beckon for walks, the stream can cool hot feet on a summers day, and the birds sing the day through. There are marked trails to follow and unmarked paths. There is a full 18 hole disc golf course with discs to share. We have bikes for the hike and bike trail (The NCR trail) that can be accessed 1.5 miles away.
With Glen Rock just over the hill, a locally sourced market, a local artisans' shoppe, a vibrant library, a lovely restaurant in a restored mill, pizza places, a shop with homemade ice cream, a florist, a beauty salon are all options.

What makes this property unique

Our home is close to the vibrant history of Gettysburg and the Amish in Lancaster but away from the traffic both of these towns share. Baltimore can be reached by car or light rail (the northern-most stop is about 25 min away in Northern Baltimore County) and offers all a large city can. And upon returning from these busier spots, the skies will darken, the stars will shine, the temperatures will cool and the noise will dissipate so that your day can quietly blend into the peaceful night.
