Soon after the establishment of the park the Great Northern Railway constructed a number of hotels and chalets and a total of 350 locations are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1932 the Going To The Sun Road was completed and later designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark providing accessibility for automobiles into the heart of the park. Hiking is popular in the park. Over half of the visitors to the park report taking a hike on the park's nearly 700 miles (1,127 km) of trails.
