About this property

Pajarito Casita; Cozy, Peaceful, West of the River

The casita is located where the desert meets the pecan orchards. Pecans have become synonymous with southern New Mexico, as Dona Ana County is one of the top pecan-producing regions in the US. There are 9 pecan trees on the property and a pecan farm across the street. The casita is suitable for one or two adults; no one under 21 accepted. Up to 2 dogs is ok. LGBT+ Friendly.

On the property, you will walk through a private gate to the entrance of the casita, which sits adjacent to the main house on two acres. You can enjoy some peace and quiet on the patio, surrounded by native desert plants such as cacti, mesquite and Palo Verde trees, yucca, palms, and agaves. Many of these are in colorful bloom March – October. In the evening, you can sit outside by the wood-burning chimenea (metal firebox), enjoying the end of the day.

Artfully arranged, this private and peaceful space seems much larger than its 300+ square feet. Rejuvenate after your adventures in the full-size bed, from which you can view the gardens. There is a bar with a microwave, single-burner stove, portable oven, mini refrigerator, utensils, and a sink. A Keurig is there for you to enjoy, along with complimentary coffee (Decaf and regular) and tea. An outdoor gas grill is also available for use.

Unwind with your favorite shows on the Roko TV, or listen to music on the portable CD player. There is free WiFi and access to a washer and drier. The washer and drier are in the garage; detergent is provided.

The casita is in a semi-rural location a half-mile from the Rio Grande. House-trained dogs are welcome. The property is gated, but small dogs can slip through the grates. At any given time, there is wildlife on or near the property. This often includes quail, rabbits, squirrels, fox, bobcat, roadrunners, coyote, and a variety of birds. For the protection of your pet—as well as the wildlife—supervision is encouraged. These animals are not aggressive and will not threaten you. They co-exist with us and us with them.

Garage or driveway parking is available during your stay.

About the host

Hosted by Christopher Alexander

Host profile image
Your hosts of Casa de Arte Las Cruces are Christopher Alexander and David Lyman. We have lived in Las Cruces for over 20 years. We bought this property in 2024, with the goal of establishing short-term rental space for visitors, as well as a studio for artists to produce and show their work. The grounds of the property are being transformed by David, who is obtaining certification as a Master Gardener. Christopher and David are avid art collectors. Therefore, the property showcases some of the collection, inside the rentals, but outside as well. Much of the art displayed is by established, blue-chip artists of the Southwest.

What makes this property unique

Welcome to our private and peaceful property, 3 miles from the historic Mesilla Plaza in Southern New Mexico. Our property is on a semi-rural, county-maintained road, less than a mile from the town of Mesilla. There are no street-lights, making for dark skies and stargazing at night. The two-acre, gated property is bordered by pecan orchards and is a haven for wildlife. The property includes a main home, a casita, and studio space, where local artists produce their craft. A garage for parking is available.

The property is ideal for artists, art lovers, birders, and those who want to experience peace and relaxation. It is suitable for retreats for artists, book clubs, writers' groups, etc. Furnished to a high standard---while retaining the true feel of New Mexico---the property has abundant wildlife. Especially at the beginning and end of the day, it is not uncommon to see quail, fox, squirrels, roadrunners, rabbits, bobcat, and a variety of regional birds.
