Contemporary farmhouse on a 650 hectare private land
Hraundalur is a contemporary farmhouse located on a 650 hectare private land 1,5 hour drive from Reykjavik on the way to the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This is as secluded a place as you can find - the nearest house is 2,5 kilometres away. A river runs through the property, and two small lakes are home to a variety of birds.

About the host
Your host

We are a family of four who returned to Iceland after many years living in London. We live in Reykjavik, and bought this land 10 years ago to build a house that would function as a family retreat, where we spend time together with our kids who are now in their late teens and early twenties, and where our kids spend time with their friends. We keep our horses here and ride around the area in summer and early autumn.
Why they chose this property
The drive from Reykjavik is about an hour and a half, so it is close enough to go for even just for the day, but it feels a world away from everywhere. The Snæfellsnes peninsula is within easy reach with all its stunning nature, as is the whole area of Borgarfjörður with geothermal baths and endless opportunities for hiking and sightseeing.
What makes this property unique
Our house is designed by David Pitt Architects on a private 650 hectare property. The nearest house is 2,5km away, and we are surrounded by beautiful nature, but still close enough to the nearest town (1/2 hour drive) to be able to go to the store, use the swimming pool and necessary services. We love nothing more than going in the sauna and then bathing in the ice-cold stream that runs past our house.
