The Charming 'Windy Gables' on Hollywood Beach: Dream Get-Away

Known to locals & historians as The Windy Gables. (Clark Gable is known to have lived here.)

Our enchanted property is steeped in both charm & comfort. This 2 story home right on the beach offers direct access to a wide, white stretch of sand and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

Hollywood Beach is a safe, quiet community of 'locals' & regular renters. There's plenty of room on the sand for family fun, long walks, romantic dinners or star-gazing after some of the best sunsets on the California coast. Our two-story summer house can be your writer's retreat or—with beds for up to 8, plus a few comfy couches—can be your family's favorite year-round get-away.

The warm living room and family room feature cozy fireplaces. The formal dining area & breakfast nook open right onto the deck for beach/ocean views at every meal. Our newly updated kitchen is located just off the family room for spectacular views (& an eye on the kids) while cooking. Hardwood & marble floors, cable TV & Wi-fi throughout. A master suite with ocean-facing balcony on the 2nd floor will let you sleep to the sound and fresh breeze off the Pacific Ocean.

Walking: Only a couple of blocks to Mrs. Olsen's for breakfast or lunch, shops in the Harbor Village, paddle boarding & kayaking, and a local Farmers' Market every Sunday. A short drive to charter boats & tours of the Channel Islands (known as 'the Galapagos of the California Coast').

Activities include kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, surfing, mountain biking & hiking on the islands, beach cruising our tiny town or along the beach paths, or just sitting by the hotel pool (up the coast a short distance) with a chilled drink in hand.

Once you're here, get great sushi, fish n' chips, pizza or BBQ within 1-2 miles; other restaurants, stores, and amenities of Oxnard & Victoria; shop the outlet malls of Camarillo; enjoy the movies, tacos & sports bars in communities nearby.

Less than an hour: The restaurants & shopping & beaches of Malibu, Santa Monica & Santa Barbara. You can be back in Los Angeles in an hour.

Had a wonderful time!

Pros: Great location, very close to the beach Plenty of towels Lots of spaces to sit and relax Falling asleep to the ocean waves was amazing! Showers are large Cons: The home really needs a detailed deep clean, including the furniture Sliding screens were difficult to open and close, due to the sand not being cleaned out We were unable to get some of the TV’s to work, even with instructions provided Overall, we had a great time at the beach and at this house. It was cloudy when we went, but we still managed to have fun. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. You need water shoes at this beach, the rocks are painful without them. Bring your own beach towels. There are no coffee filters provided, so don’t forget to pick some up. The beds are really comfortable and my daughter loved the little tiny bedroom with a small bathroom all to herself.

Windy Gables is great!

We stayed at Windy Gables with family and friends and it’s such a great place to stay. Right on the sand and in a perfect location to take advantage of everything the area has to offer. We will definitely be back!

Golf Trip stay

Great place to stay! Comfortable and overall clean place. Sliding screen doors were hard to open because of all the sand in the tracks. Exterior needs a hosing off. Overall really liked the location and our stay was comfortable with 7 +50 year old men! Within 40 minutes of several great golf courses, which was the purpose of our trip! Would stay again!

Cozy home on beach

House was clean and kitchen was well stocked with all the supplies we needed to make a nice dinner. Home was located in a lovely neighborhood in walking distance to the harbor shops and restaurants. Would love to stay again.

Quaint Cottage

The cottage is spacious with nicely upgraded kitchen and bathrooms. The access to the beach was great and the large patio enjoyable to sit on.

Very warm and comfortable

The house is very charming. A great location and walkable restaurants. the house is very well appointed with everything we needed. We enjoyed sleeping with the doors open and listening to the waves break. None of us wanted to leave.

Toes in the sand beach house

Perfect beach house to enjoy surf and sand with family. We only left the house one evening for fish and chips during our four night trip - the rest of the time we simply relaxed on the back deck taking in all that Hollywood beach had to offer.

Lovely welcome by the host - Wine and fresh flowers. Place was clean and welcoming. Furniture is comfortable and beach and baby friendly. Great location. Highly recommend for a family stay.

Magical beach house

This house was magical. The location was right on a beach that was not busy. The beach itself was sandy and beautiful without any trash. The master bedroom looked out at the ocean with a balcony to sit and enjoy the view. The rest of the house was also very nice and comfortable. We had a great time, and would definitely recommend this place to others!

Awesome Private Beach Destination

The house was great, the location awesome, the beach, although public is basically private. It's really tucked away on Hollywood Beach walking distance to restaurants and bars. Check out Rudder Room!

Please Avoid this VRBO (so I can have it to myself)

So my wife and I can come back, again and again, and again. I WISH it wasn't on the most vacant beach in Southern California. I WISH there wasn't a piece of trash for miles. I WISH the THREE fireplaces weren't so warm and inviting, I WISH the whole house didn't grab you by the lapels and yell RELAX, you FOOL every time you stepped into the place, because then OTHER PEOPLE wouldn't want to come here and reconnect with the stars and each other as my wife and I did this last weekend. (did I mention walking-distance restaurants?) Damn, I wish this place weren't so great.

Very Relaxing

We were having our yearly fly-in somewhere and have a visit. Sisters, aunt and niece. Very beachy vibe to the house. The pictures don’t do it justice. It is a lot roomier than it looks, with different areas to break out to for conversations. Nice and neat neighborhood. We could hear the ocean oil derrick pumping platform at night with the window cracked. Not sure if that is all the time. Not terrible, just something to know. Super convenient location. Easy drives to Ojai, Ventura, Santa Barbara.

Cozy, comfortable holiday stay!

Perfect little getaway on the beach! We didn’t have the best weather but loved sitting by the fire and being together. The location is fantastic and we walked to restaurants/coffee/marina almost daily. Very comfortable beds and the house had a very cool, old charm to it. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Charming property, but needs work.

We had a lovely stay on this property. It definitely needs some attention though. We had to clean sand out of the home and off the patio upon our arrival. The patio was completely covered, so was unable to use until we cleaned. None of the remotes for tvs, fireplaces, etc worked. Trash cans were full when we arrived, so had to take our trash somewhere else. Ant problem in the dining room. These were not game changers, but very disappointing given the expense of our stay.

Family celebration

First I must say that my out of town family members who stayed at your property had a fabulous time and of course being right on the beach is the best part! That being said, there were a few things that I felt were not up to par.... 1. The television never worked properly. It went on and off by itself, whenever it felt like it! 2. there were at least 4 outdoor chairs that were broken and not usable! 3. There were 2 bbqs on property, but the grills on them were rusted out and not usable! 4. One of my family said that the pillows and comforters did not smell clean! 5. Lastly, the outdoor spaces weren't very appealing, no landscaping, flowers, nothing! Not very appealing, just dirty tables and chairs! Love where it is, just needs some updates.

Darling bungalow by seaside

Three old girlfriends together again at the seaside. This charming, sweet older updated beach house suits our needs perfectly. We enjoyed relaxing under patio umbrellas with a glass of wine, taking walks on the sand and always with the breaking waves and ebbing tide as harmonious accompaniment... enchanting.

Our family has worked in the film industry for generations and our jobs require us to travel a lot. We've seen a lot of great sets in stunning locations around the world, but Hollywood Beach, for us, is our own little sanctuary.

We love to bring our kids out for a mini-vacation or long weekend -- they play and explore while we just relax. We like cooking dinner as the sun goes down; the kids play on our wide, safe stretch of beach.

We're usually sipping wine on the deck while the sun sets -- and it sure beats round trip flights to Hawaii for the very same views!

Why they chose this property

We found this house when looking for a place 'near enough' to LA to enjoy often, but 'far enough' from our busy lives to allow our families to really enjoy 'getting away.' Hollywood Beach is the perfect spot.

Imagine our surprise when we found that our great-grandmother's 'little get-away' from the Hollywood scene of the 1920's was this very same beach! (She was an actress & dancer when silent films were transitioning to sound.)

Hollywood Beach was the vacation spot of the celebrities from that era. And, while it's now only 45 minutes to LA, Malibu or Santa Barbera, this tiny ocean community is still quiet and remote enough to seem like our own private beach.
