About this property

Take a Ferry to the Island of Your Dreams.

Welcome to your vacation home - a barn style summer home on Broad Cove near the ferry. Imagine yourself relaxing on the deck at the end of a busy day while your kids entertain themselves on the lawn and in the field leading to the cove. On the shore is a rocky beach and deep water anchorage (w/heavy mooring). The waterfront includes the use of a dinghy and a float. Or, on cooler days, curl up in front of the fireplace with a good book (well stocked library) while you look out through the french doors.

On the first floor, you will enjoy an open living room w/fireplace, dining room, kitchen. which is well supplied and includes the basic food needs: salt, pepper, flour, sugar, lobster pot, etc. Or, move your meals outdoors for al fresco dining on the deck. There is a half bath on the first floor.

On the second floor, the master bedroom includes a queen sized bed with down comforter, the second has twin beds and and the third has bunk beds. A full bath, well supplied with linens(including swimming towels), has full amenties including a washer and dryer. The playroom includes VCR, DVD player and plenty of tapes and discs. No TV reception, sorry! The loft has a ladder and a wonderful hang-out for the kids or air mattress for sleeping.

Getting to Islesboro is part of the enchantment of this island - you arrive by car ferry which leaves frequently from Lincolnville Beach. This is definitely a summer cottage with a get-away-from-the-world feeling. You will find the comforts of home without the hassle of the work-a-day world. However, you will have connection with wifi and phone.

Islesboro is ten miles long and a mile wide. It offers two grocery stores(w/liquor), a library, bookstore, gift/paper/lunch store and the snack shack at the ferry. You will also find a golf club, public tennis courts and also a kids sailing program. Biking is great - especially to the snack shack which is only 1/4 mile from the house and offering the best sunsets in Maine!

A day trip to Camden, Fort Knox in Bucksport or even antiquing along Rte. 1 will round out your vacation in Maine.

Magical Islesboro Barn
Spent an incredible week here - the pictures of the views and grounds don't do it justice. The barn has all the character of a well loved family vacation home with a fully stocked kitchen, comfortable beds and cozy working fireplace. Felt very private and the private beach was just beyond the field. The island was very quiet and serene in the off season - there was a coffee shop that had fall hours with delicious baked goods and yummy coffee. Cannot recommend the barn enough if you are looking for a magical, slow paced and cozy break.

Absolutely lovely
What an amazing place! Islesboro is a gem of an island offering all the magic of Maine without the crowds. The Barn was a perfect place to stay on our first trip to the island. It was clean and well appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed (and more). As someone who loves to cook, this was a wonderful bonus. The beds were comfortable and inviting. The sheets were 100% cotton, which seems a rarity in vacation rentals these days. There were puzzles and games for rainy days and cozy couches for reading or staring out at the water. The Barn sits on a wonderful property. We loved sipping coffee on the back porch each morning. It is quiet and feels like a world away from everything. We were only there for a week, but we did take the opportunity to walk many of the trails on the island. Roger marked some of the best walks and we made sure to hit them all. He also suggested hitting up the ice cream store in Dark Harbor. We did so early on and ended up there almost every afternoon. We also loved The Fen bakery, the farmer’s market (goats, fresh veggies, and a local mycologist), and the Island Market (they have take away pizza). I’m glad to have found this place and will definitely keep it in mind when we next visit Maine. Thanks, Roger and Maddie for sharing your beautiful barn and for being such wonderful hosts!

Perfect Peaceful Getaway
My family (me, my wife, our four daughters, my parents, and our Siberian Husky) couldn't have asked for a more peaceful place to recharge for a week. Roger and Maddie were extremely gracious hosts who made themselves available to answer questions, advise on attractions, and provide amenities. The island was beautiful and secluded, and we loved every minute of it. Five Stars.

Great open concept waterfront home
Really a lovely space to be in, all together in one big open plan. Big french doors on the water side, nice deck, nice big backyard leading down to a quiet cove near the ferry on islesboro. We had our two dogs with us and the neighbors were far enough away, so we didn't feel too worried about her running to their houses and bothering them. The place feels very private and comfortable. Well furnished kitchen too, nice fireplace, basically everything you need for good family vacation time. Roger and Maddie were really kind and welcoming, offering tips on exploring the island and personal connections. Couldn't ask for more!

Islesboro Island Retreat
This was our first time on Islesboro and booked with little knowledge of the area, just dreams of getting away with our family. Our stay at the barn was everything we wanted and needed. Roger and Maddie were exceptional and informative hosts. It was a treat to get to know them and their story. The accommodations were well kept and fully stocked. We explored several trails on the island collecting treasures and foraging for berries. A custom cruise with quicksilver to explore some remote islands was a highlight of the trip. The island is home to 2 well stocked markets and of course our fill of ice cream at Dark Harbor which we visited most days. Thank you Roger and Maddie (and Lucy) for the love you've poured into your home and property and the love you showed our family while we were fortunate enough to experience your little slice of heaven.

Peaceful spot
The Barn is an amazing place to stay. we are a family of 7 and we where more than comfortable in the house. House is fully equipped. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck, sitting by the water and having fire pits at night. We where a little disappointed that there was no boat or bikes.. but we had a great time with out paddle board. I will recommend this place without doubt

Everything we hoped!
This was our 3rd trip to Maine. Each time we stayed in a different area to explore everything the state has to offer. Islesboro and the Barn did not disappoint! The hosts were AMAZING. Loved hearing their story and the story of the Barn. Plenty of space, all the amenities we needed, all on a beautiful property. We had the fireplace going every night. Keep in mind you're in Maine, on an island, surrounded by the woods, so it has that vibe, but the stars, the full moon, all wonderful. The material the hosts sent beforehand was very helpful. We scheduled the ferry as they suggested and had no issues going back and forth to the mainland, although we spent as most of our time on the island itself. They have 2 well-stocked stores on the island, just be mindful that they close early. Plenty of hiking trials, and the beach on the southern end of the island was a favorite of the family (and the dog). We were at the end of the season so some of the Dark Harbor shops were closed, but we expected that so it wasn't an issue. Overall, it was a great trip and a great experience!

Another amazing stay at the Barn!
Once again, we had a wonderful stay at the Barn! Roger and Maddie are such lovely people and perfect hosts. The whole family enjoyed our conversations and sharing our beach finds with them. The grounds are so well kept and the views are spectacular. We rarely left the property. We didn't need to! We absolutely love it there. Thanks Roger and Maddie!

Beautiful Stay
We had a wonderful vacation at The barn! The location was very convenient to the ferry. The barn was perfect for our family. The beds were comfortable- we all slept great! There was a great view from the deck and a short walk to the shore where we spent mornings and afternoons searching for treasures. We loved exploring hiking trails and beaches of Islesboro. We can’t wait to return!

Quintessential Maine Cottage (with all of the modern comforts)
This is a truly special vacation rental. The Barn was built it in the style of a traditional Maine summer cottage/barn (rustic with exposed beams and rough hewn wood) but it is a newer building that is rock solid, thoughtfully designed, fully insulated, and very comfortable and homey. At this property you feel like you are visiting friends and family. There are plenty of linens, and towels, (including beach towels), soap and shampoo, cooking oil and spices, books, games and puzzles, throw blankets, etc. The barn is very private and has a lovely view of an inlet. The property has water access (though no real beach), and a fire pit down by the shore. Our wonderful hosts Roger and Maddie pointed us to several great beaches and hikes and we did a bit of bike riding. We enjoyed ice cream at the Dark Harbor shop and pastries by Laura of Blue water Bakery. (Call her direct to order). We had “Tuesday night pizza” from On the Rock cafe, as well as Friday night taco bowls. Our family of 4 (kids aged 16 and 12) stayed at the Barn August 7-14, 2021. It was our first to Islesboro. A trip highlight was chartering the quicksilver with Ben for a tour of the area by boat. Magical.

Fantastic Time
We were looking for a place that was remote, but yet having things to do around us. This was the perfect place. The island is beautiful and very welcoming. We took hikes, went to the beach, and did some fishing. The property was perfect for our very well behaved dog. She loved it. Our Property owner Roger and his wife were amazing. They communicated with us as when we had any questions, but other than that, we never heard them. In fact, when I asked about lobsters for dinner, Roger saw that he got very large one for us. So very kind. They are such wonderful people. We look forward to heading back their one day soon. Thank you for letting us stay in your barn.

An outstanding birthday weekend
This property is amazing. The barn has an incredible rustic design and feel. It was just the two of us on this trip, but plenty of comfortable beds, towels, etc for a large family. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook dinner all 3 nights. The large fireplace in the open living room crated the perfect spot to read and relax in the evenings. The beautiful back deck, yard, and deserted beach were ideal for morning and afternoon walks with the dogs. Far and away the best part of the home are its lovely owners Roger and Maddie. Their hospitality was unprecedented. From making sure we were settled in and comfortable, to providing maps and tips about the island, to taking us to pick up lobsters at the dock on seal harbor...amazing hosts and amazing people. We look forward to seeing them again soon on a return trip (with our kids next time, perhaps!) Of note, this was our first trip to Islesboro and it did not disappoint. We loved the hiking trails, two small grocery stores, shops, and community center...be sure to check out the work by the local artists!!!

Perfect
This property lived up to all of our expectations in a way that far exceeded our actual expectations... It really was perfect in a way that couldn't have been expected. The layout of the barn was great (and the architecture of it impressive). While it was just two of us and a dog, it was cozy, and it still had several bedrooms that went untouched. Everything was in great condition and it made for a nice, comfortable stay. It was also so well-equipped that we were able to make some big meals and have fun hanging out inside occasionally. The property it is on was also great for us. The barn isn't far from the main house, but it still felt almost totally secluded. There was plenty of space to be outside walking around, playing with our dog, throwing horseshoes, sitting by the fire, etc. While not ideal for swimming when we were there (temperature and seaweed), the water access was incredible. We were also greeted one evening by a deer right in the back, which was surprising and fun. This was our first time on Islesboro and we really fell in love with it. It had a really interesting vibe, beautiful scenery, nice little hikes/nature walks, and so on. While amenities on the island were limited we still found everything we needed between stores on the mainland, the small groceries on island, and some free produce at the community center. The time it took to line up for the ferry was a bit of a surprise, but it ended up just being part of the experience and a chance to look through pictures, read, etc. This was exactly the vacation we needed, and we would love to go back to Roger and Maddie's barn to do it again!

About the host

Hosted by Roger Burke

Host profile image
We are from Ipswich, MA and have been coming to Maine for many years. Roger first came with his parents when he was ten and didn't return for fifteen years when he brought his wife. Later they returned with their three children.
We are now semi-retired. Roger, a Brown graduate, was a contractor and now does preservation consulting, most recently at Old South Church in Boston. Maddie, a graduate of Montserrat College of Art, is a printmaker and fiber artist.
We both think this island and surrounding Penobscot Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It's a place where the biggest going-ons are the Art Shows at the Historical Society. And, no malls.
