About this property

Charming Apartment -- Hike from your doorstep

Secluded, newly renovated apartment in a 100 year old stone garage. Walk/hike, mountain bike, or cross-country ski right from your door. Ground floor entry and eat-in kitchen with a living room/bedroom upstairs; the main house is 130' away.

The space is perfect for a couple or a couple with kids (maximum capacity is 2 adults and 2 children 14 or under). The kitchen is about 17' by 7', with lots of windows, all new stainless steel appliances (including a dishwasher), a new counter and sink, and redone cabinets. It's very well stocked with high end pots, pans and cooking gear. There's a table that seats four.

Upstairs the living and bedroom space is one long room, about 25' long. The floor is 17' wide, giving a good feeling of spaciousness, but given the roof pitch the walkable space is about 10 feet wide. There's a new queen bed and two 5 inch twin mattresses perfect for kids. There's a comfy living space with a love seat, a leather chair, and a large, new TV. The bathroom is small, with a shower, sink, and toilet and great views of the park.

Outside is a private area with a new table and four chairs, a Weber charcoal grill, and a chimnea with two Adirondack chairs.

The garage below the space is used for storage, not for parking our cars, and we will refrain from accessing it when we have weekend guests (we also have a shed for items we use more often).

We accept well-trained adult dogs for stays of one week or less.

We had a great stay at this comfortable cottage. Peter stayed in touch with us and was available if needed. The cottage was very clean. It is in a great location and we would love to return to go hiking. I highly recommend this cozy home.

The Best Host and Perfect Place To Stay
If you are in need of a perfect getaway or a place to stay near New York City, I recommend to give this perfect apartment a try. It was the perfect size for us two and our small dog, Tilly. The host, Peter, was very responsive and was one texted away. After a 13 hour drive Peter brought over bread, eggs, jam, milk, and butter. We were so thankful because we did not want to leave again. We had a scrambled eggs Sandwich and it was the best! We did not realize we would love the city so much. I asked Peter if he would let Tilly out a few times if we went back the next day and he eagerly agreed. This made our trip so much better by spending 2 days in the city. The apartment has a beautiful view and it’s very relaxing sitting outside. The description is 100% correct. The bathroom is small but it was great for us two. Peter thank you for making our stay wonderful! Ps.. sorry I forgot to clean out the refrigerator before we left! ;)

Refund
Owner needed to refund me my money due to many issues with the room. Clogged A/C filter and mold in unit. Dirty fan that I had to clean off myself to use. Multiple hairs, blood stain on the bed linens and a very late check in because his cleaning staff thought I was checking in the following day. Owners were very courteous and helpful refunding me all of my money. Don't seem like bad people just trusted the wrong people to maintain the property.

Hikers Dream
The cottage was exactly as described. We were more than comfortable staying here. Mostly we drove to Kakiat County Park (1.5 miles down the road) and hiked any one of the trails from there but there are so many options right out the door as well. Location is perfect for access to anywhere in Rockland Conty. Highly recommend

Our best VRBO experience to date!
Michael and I were in the area for clinical hypnotherapy so our days were long. It was such a delight to return to our little cottage every evening. We relished in the hiking and relaxing chats around the outdoor fire every night. It was quiet and quaint and we would stay again if ever we find ourselves in the outskirts of NYC. Thank you Peter and family for making it such a wonderful experience. Kindly, Dina and Michael

Comfortable, clean, helpful, friendly owner
Very nice listing. As stated in the title clean & comfortable with a great owner who went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The neighboring town of Suffern, is cute and safe (all be it a bit sleepy) and friendly latin community. So if you speak Spanish muy bein, that will open some doors for you. A lot of great Mexican food on the main drag. If you're heading into NYC good new news your only about 10min from the train station. To get to NYP (Penn station) will require you to take one connecting train and take about an hour each way. While not difficult for seasoned train commuters (we go into Chicago often via train) can be slightly inaccessible for non-residents in kind of ways. For example the commuter parking lot has a lot of tough talk about we'll ticket / toe your car but never really clearly explains on website, app or signage where to park to park and be safe. We came to the conclusion that any where was fine cause no one's checking it in actually. The adjesent town of Ramsey is cute and very accessible via car. Check out Ramapo Reservation great outdoor spot. Not to sound one note but Ramsey has a surprisingly prominent Italian community so if you speak Italian; molto bene. One final FYI if you're hiking as we were PLZ CHECK FOR TICKS REALLY CAREFULLY, they are getting really bad in the NE. 5 stars!

Beautiful stone cottage in the woods
The cottage is exactly as advertised and very comfortable for a couple or one person looking for some peaceful seclusion. The lovely hosts, Donna and Peter, are just a minute away but very respectful of their guests privacy. Any questions were quickly and kindly addressed. The cottage was clean, cute and well equipped. The bed was outstanding. Slept so well there! The bathroom is small (as advertised) but totally doable. The outdoor area with chimenea is perfect for fireside s’mores and stargazing. I would love to stay again sometime. Highly recommend.

Very secluded in the woods
Very cool old Stone garage redone. It's very private up in the woods. It's also very small. If you have larger family members it would be difficult to use the bathroom. Would recommend for a couple.

Better than expected!
I stayed with my two kids for a week while one of my kids had daily appointments in a nearby clinic. To be able to come back to this cottage and let them run around outside in a perfect outdoor space was amazing. The cottage was perfect for the three of us and the kitchen had everything we needed and more! The host was so friendly and responsive. This stay went above and beyond any expectations I had!

Pre memorial day trip
We adored the cabin! The location was ideal and easy to get around and the house itself felt like we were in a movie between the charm and the nature. While the owner was out of town when we were there it was very easy to get a hold of him and he was very friendly. Would absolutely stay there again!!

Exactly what we needed
This was my first time staying here with my partner. I’ve talked about it being one of my favorite places to visit for years and finally was able to share the experience. He loved the house and being able to walk out the door and hike the mountain as much as I hoped. Already thinking about when we can visit again. Thanks Peter!

About the host

Hosted by Peter Cain

Host profile image
Donna and I loved our old house, but thought that being right on Harriman State Park would be a game changer and it was. Whether it's a long hike or a quick 40 minutes with the dog, we get out into our beautiful part of Harriman daily.

We lived in NYC and Long Island, but have been Rockland based for many years now and love it.

Why they chose this property

The main house is a brick Georgian colonial built in the 1920s as the main house for a large family estate. Today the estate's stone barns are the nearby residences of our friends and neighbors and the Mahwah River runs through it all.

We loved the pretty stone garage (which predates the house) and decided to renovate the apartment as we really enjoyed sharing our other house - also historic -- with people who appreciate it as we do. We look forward to helping guests take full advantage of our amazing location.

What makes this property unique

The secluded location with a choice of more gentle paths or challenging hiking right out your door is pretty unique! And all just 30 minutes from the George Washington Bridge.
