Camp Driftwood Asheville is a rustic riverside retreat, just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. Our family-owned and operated vacation hideaway spans a third of a mile directly on the banks of The French Broad River, rumored to be the third oldest river in the world!
Built around the ruins of an old Grist Mill, Camp Driftwood Asheville honors that time in history by maintaining the stone wall fragments that used to encompass the storehouse. Clarks Driftwood Cottage is actually built over the 'mill race' that was used to divert the river into the mill. The place used to be a popular stop on the Buncombe County Turnpike-which was part of the Drovers Road, which is now Old Marshall Highway. "The turnpike was finished in 1827 and was the main thoroughfare from the state line, through the Saluda Gap, by way of Flat Rock and Hendersonville, across the Asheville plateau to the Buncombe County Courthouse in Asheville, down the gorge of the French Broad River to Warm Springs(now Hot Springs), and just north at Paint Rock where it joined the Tennessee Road. The entire road was seventy-five miles in length. It was considered one of the finest roads in the East."
This site was a popular stop on the Turnpike because of its proximity to Asheville and its easy access to the River. Weary travelers would spend the night enjoying the sounds of the rapids, while they waited for their products to process.
Camp Driftwood carries on the tradition of providing riverside respite and currently offers travelers a variety of vacation options. We have; 8 primitive riverside tent sites, 3 Glamping Cottages, and 3 Vacation Homes. Whichever you choose you will have direct access to the river, a fire ring, a picnic table, and space to relax next to the water. We can sleep a total of 19 people in beds, with tons of space for tent camping. Inquire about events!
All guests are welcome to stroll the length of the property and enjoy the Community Areas, including; the Swimming Beach, a Fishing Beach, the Tree Swing, the Rapids, and the large Community Fire Pit.
Our Riverside Retreat offers our Tiny Bathhouse for tent campers and visitors to our Glamping Cottages. We have a single-serve one-stall Bathhouse, right in the middle of the Camp. You will find a vanity & sink with a mirror in the first section, past a partition is the toilet area, and thru a closing door, there is a shower stall. New on-demand Hot Water heater! Doors on both sides are locked from the inside when in use.
We offer a passive campground experience, more geared toward adults, as there are no fences or safety measures in place along the river. We don't have a camp store, there is no office-no playground surrounded by mulch. But..we do have direct access to an incredible ancient river, the best kind of playground!
Camp Driftwood Asheville is located on Old Marshall Highway-AKA River Rd.
