You can relax on the couch next to a crackling fire reading one of the many books about the area or take in a movie that was shot nearby. We have several to choose from. The view from the living area is serene, taking in Roan Mountain and Bald Knob.
The Japanese soaking tub faces is the epitome of relaxation! Take in long range views of Roan mountain while soaking deep in the tub listening to nature.
You’ll have almost anything you need to cook for a crowd including All Clad cookware, JA Henckels knives, stand mixer, dual fuel range with convection, blender, food processor, cookbooks, & lots of coffee options and an on-demand hot water dispenser!

About this property

Artful Self Restoration! Japanese Tub & Fast WiFi

Perched on a hill above the N. Toe River at the end of the road you’ll find Dougs Way, a modern cabin with huge picture windows that frame long range mountain views as if it were art. Surrounded by old oaks and loblolly pines, the property is quiet and never cookie cutter. You’ll love the Japanese soaking tub, two-sided fireplace, gourmet kitchen, robust coffee/tea setup, and the true craftsmanship found in the artwork and handmade details like the bent cherrywood “cloud” above the dining table!

We live off-site and are very responsive by phone, text, and email. If you need recommendations on what to do in the area, directions, or have a question about the property, we are always more than happy to help. While we do not live close-by, we do have many local resources to help out should onsite assistance be needed. We will do everything we can to make sure you enjoy every minute of your getaway.

Most of the homes in the immediate neighborhood were also built by Doug Sigler. Several of our neighbors are crafts people or second home owners. The area is rural, safe, and generally quiet.

Guests have access to the house, except for locked areas, the garage using the door opener, and the yard.

GPS is not correct. Directions and access instructions will be emailed to you prior to arrival.

ROAD & DRIVEWAY:
The gravel road leading to the driveway can be steep at the top for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as Mini Coopers or sports cars, or light vehicles, such as Prius or small trucks. Using a lower gear can be helpful. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no trouble getting up the road or driveway.

Four/All wheel drive is not typically required, but if you are renting a vehicle, this option might be a good choice for the mountains - especially in winter.

Chains for tires are a good option if you are visiting in the winter and do not have 4-wheel drive and you are concerned about getting around.

DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS
Getting a good running start in steep passes is always a good idea and be sure not to stop in steep sections or you may need to go back down and try again.

WHAT IS THE ROAD LIKE? IS 4-WHEEL DRIVE NECESSARY?
4-Wheel/All Wheel drive is not necessary. We visited the region for years in a Honda sedan without issue. Rear wheel drive vehicles with really low ground clearance (like some hatchbacks and mini-vans), as well as light vehicles (Prius and small 2-wheel drive trucks), are not ideal and take the most experience to drive in the mountains of NC. The way to the cabin is almost entirely on paved roads. The last 1-2 minutes is on a gravel road with one steep spot just before you turn onto our lane which is flat.

FALL FOLIAGE: Typically fall foliage begins October 1 and, barring an early frost, ends the first week of November. It usually peaks around the 20th through late October.

PHONE SERVICE:
Verizon is the primary mobile carrier for the area. Other mobile users are encouraged to check their carrier's coverage in the region. For added peace of mind, we also offer a house phone can be used to make calls to locations in the continental US for free. The phone is registered with E911 service.
