Upon arrival we smelled a gas leak. The owner shut off the gas to solve that problem, but then the gas grill, gas fire pit and gas fireplaces could not be used.
Next we discovered that the refrigerator and dishwasher did not work. The owner brought a cooler and ice, but we lost much of the food we purchased, we had to drive out to purchase ice each day, we drained coolers each day, we hand-washed dishes and bought paperware and ate more at restaurants.
The toaster and coffee maker worked poorly, and while the owner said he would bring replacements, he did not. We borrowed a toaster and coffee maker from a friend who lives relatively nearby.
There was black mold on two bathroom ceilings. The owner suspected it was mildew and said he would send a worker with a ladder to clean the problem, but he did not do so.
We encountered a terrible odor, like that of a dead animal, in the kitchen. The owner sent a worker who taped-up gaps under the cooktop, and said sheetrock would need to be removed later to access what he thought was a dead squirrel or mouse (he assured us it was not a rat).
After we returned from our trip I requested a partial refund of the money we paid for this premium rental. The owner was hostile to that request. He tried to blame me for the problems. At one point he said the refrigerator did not work because we placed too much food in it. He said that my family should have tried to fix the refrigerator but turning it off for a day and then turning it on again (but we were using the refrigerator by adding ice and treating it as an additional cooler). He said the dead animal smell must be from an animal we allowed in by leaving a door open.
He actually told me that compared complaining to him about the broken refrigerator and dishwasher was like complaining to him about bad weather.
The house we rented was in a beautiful location. There were many details about the house that were excellent. My family made the most of our week’s vacation and we had a good time. Still, when paying for a week at a premium 4-bedroom house, my family should expect a working refrigerator and dishwasher, and we should expect some reasonable refund in light of these problems.
