About this property

History in Motion relax in a unique and spacious 1890 period restored Apartment

There has been a new development or use of the first-floor occupant. Funkit Coffee and Thrift is now hosting Non Alcoholic dance parties every last Thursday of the month from 5-9. The sound is quite loud in the apartment. In consideration of the inconvenience, Funkit is issuing my guests a 100.00 dollar gift card to “Downtown Missoula.” This card can be used in many merchant locations in Downtown Missoula.

Make yourself at home in this unique one-of-a-kind 3-bedroom Missoula Apartment. Located in a nationally registered Historic Railroad District. This adorable 1890-period restored apartment features 1 queen bed and 2 full beds, perfect for a cozy stay. With amenities like heating, WiFi, a washing machine, and a dryer, guests can relax and unwind. The 2 bathrooms offer a bathtub shower and hairdryer, towels, soap, and shampoo for added convenience. Fall in love with Missoula and enjoy the magic it has to offer. Lots of art from around the world is on display as well as house plants and High-speed WI-FI. Easy access to all Missoula has to offer there is even a coffee house/thrift store below the apartment. (Funki-it Coffee and Thrift LLC) Nearby convenience store Chinese restaurant and the Soup Farm also Trailhead access to Waterworks Hill. Only one mile from the U of M.

Missoula History & Nature
Lodging in an historic Missoula added to the charm of our visit. Historic details abound in this 2nd floor residence. There was plenty if room to spend time together or alone. The location is good for walking to many dining options. Hiking options nearby are plentiful as well as other entertainment choices.

Beautifully Restored!
This must be the most unique VRBO in Missoula. The building is incredible and it was such a a fun place to stay. There are three nicely furnished bedrooms, a well stocked kitchen, two full bathrooms as well as a TV room and front room with a second dining table. The space is huge with tall ceilings and beautiful skylights. It was convenient to be able to walk down to the coffee shop just downstairs in the mornings for coffee although there were many options for coffee in the apartment also. It was easy to walk downtown for the farmers market and to the restaurants and shops. Overall we loved this stay and wouldn't hesitate to return. I highly recommend this for anyone staying in Missoula!

About the host

Host profile image
I've lived in Missoula for 24 years and personally restored the building listed here along with another large 1890 apartment building in the neighborhood. I strive to offer a unique and one-of-a-kind living space. I want as many people as I can to share in this building's charm. The Montana Preservation Alliance has presented me with an "Outstanding Commercial Rehabilitation" award. My work has been featured in Missoula Magazine in 2008. I host Open Mics and am an accomplished singer-songwriter. I would like to meet my guests if they would please. I am a community activist. I travel the world and enjoy fine dining and road trips snow skiing hiking and site seeing.

Why they chose this property

Opportunity. The neighborhood offers the best of Missoula with a wonderful mix of diverse people and opportunities to explore Missoula's past. My luck would have it that I rented a small bungalow behind the building I've restored, the previous owner offered me an amazing opportunity to produce one of the city's most revered buildings. This parcel was 3 months away from being raised. I felt that in time reviving this building would revive a neighborhood that had been in decline for many years as has been the case, my bet paid off! The building is across the street from an active railyard which at times can be noisy due to coupling operations I hope to have success in a relocation effort of the railyard to obtain a better quality of live for our community.

What makes this property unique

The "Keim Building" aka the "Stensrud Building" is unique in charter being one of the last remaining facades of the 1890 building boom due to the railroad coming to Missoula in 1883. This parcel has been meticulously restored over the past 24 years. The Northside Railroad National Historic District area once thrived in the 1890s and early turn of the century as Hotel brothels, and warehouses were in abundance. The building is a time capsule. Art adorns the apartment with elegant lamps and tribal area rugs. A relaxing ambient air is present here. The apartment has lighting features that offers a very romantic ambiance. Fine art is on display from local artists. Having a Coffeehouse/thrift store below the apartment is just grand! It allows my guest to meet the locals.
