Comfortable, no-frills but adequate. Nice to be able to hear the river. FYI, the entrance is challenging - steep driveway and steep steps to the door. This could be a problem for anyone with any mobility issues. We had an overhead light go out and the host/manager promptly sent someone to take care of it.
Location is two miles away (a short drive) from the Mt Mitchell trailhead. We were able to do the big hike to the summit as well as several smaller hikes to waterfalls and a swim in the river, all within easy driving distance. Little Switzerland was about 30 minutes away, and a nice afternoon diversion.
Our stay was great. The kitchen has all of the essentials and pretty nice cookware. The beds were comfy and we had WFI that worked perfectly. The driveway was super steep, lol! The dishwasher didn’t work and there was a blow dryer that didn’t work either. It was fine, however, we had the dishwasher fully loaded.
It was a great stay! I can’t wait to come back!
Sweet Spot was a perfect fall getaway for my husband and me. It is so close to so many hiking trails and the BRP. It's comfortable and our pooch enjoyed it too.
This house was wonderful. Being right next to the South Toe River was relaxing and the house itself was very comfy. Kitchen was nicely stocked and it was a great place to be.
This house is in a good location for reaching amazing scenic views and access to fishing, golf, and a variety of waterfall hikes. The city of Marion is about 30 minutes down the mountain with good selection of grocery stores and restaurants.
The driveway is a very steep walk up to the house and so are the stairs to enter, so loading and unloading can be a challenge. The house has good space and a well-stocked kitchen. We did have to do some cleaning when we arrived, including changing the bed sheets. The owner did respond to this issue in a very positive manner.
Sweet Spot was minutes from numerous hikes including the Mt Mitchell trail. The internet was among the best we’ve had which enabled us to work while away. We’d happily stay again.
This is the second time we stayed at this house. It is in a great location and I especially loved mornings on the deck, listening the river. We did some hiking and fishing, and of course went into Barnsville for the bbq at Pig & Grits, and shopping at Something Special and Monkey Business. We'll be back!
This place was almost ideal for our family of 6. I gave everything a 5, but I gave it a 4 overall, because:
1) Bathroom doors get stuck. A little bit of shaving the wood on the door frames should fix that.
2) Main door inside handle needs to be fixed. When we got there, it was taped on, but the tape came off. It needs to be fixed or replaced for good.
3) Driveway is slippery when wet. Car slipped when going down it in reverse. Also, shoes without good rubber soles will also slip. We had to take our shoes off and go up barefoot. Wooden steps up to the house also slippery. Solution: put a rubberized mat on one side of the driveway leading up to the house, and on the stairs.
Other than that, the house is nice and had everything we needed.

We had a great time staying here! The kitchen is well equipped and the beds were very comfortable (especially the master bedroom). The location is great- we walked down to Roaring Fork falls to the right of the property and to the campground down the gravel road to the left. For very ambitious hikers, you’re also at the base of the Mt. Mitchell trail (we’re not that motivated though lol!) The neighborhood is very safe and people were very friendly. Each evening we walked through the community right across the street, it’s lovely. The house is only 3 easy miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway which is the best way to access nearby parks, hiking trails, & towns (Little Switzerland, etc.) The property was great for us, especially during the summer, but for people with toddlers or physical limitations the driveway hill and steps up to the door may be challenging (I’d imagine especially so during months where icing may occur) but this is very typical for mountain homes and once you’re up and inside, everything is great! We appreciated the a/c during an especially hot day (works GREAT) The kitchen is well equipped and we cooked most meals in the home during our 10 day stay. Thank you for also being pet friendly, our little dog had a great time vacationing with us and it’s awesome to be able to take her with us!
Great Location For Exploring the Toe River and Black Mountains
For me it was the perfect home base to explore nearby waterfalls and to hike the high peaks of the Black Mountains. Clean and comfortable. Quiet and cool due to the higher elevation. It is a ways to the nearest grocery store so pack in your groceries. You have everything you need to prepare your own meals.
Really appreciated the location, nestled in Mt Pisgah National Forest. Excellent waterfall hikes nearby and the joy of the running river outside the cabin.
The property was very clean and had everything we needed for the weekend. Location was convenient to the Mt Mitchell Golf Course and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We hiked a couple trails that were nearby.
While the house overlooks the Toe River, the river is across the street, not in the backyard and the nearest access to the river is about 50 yards down the road (there are no trespassing signs at the path near the bridge).
The garage is not mentioned as an available space in the property description; however, it is shown in the photos, so it would be helpful to let renters know that they cannot use it.
Just steps away from everything the Pisgah forest has to offer! The south toe has easy access with tons of hiking and exploring! Roaring falls is right around the corner and a great, easy hike with the family (perfect for our 2 1/2 year old)
The property is secluded and has tons of privacy. Only downside that we found was there can tend to be a fair amount of traffic going in and out of to the forest and to black mountain campground. Luckily it’s generally slow and everyone is very respectful if you’re out for a walk.
Wouldn’t hesitate to stay again!
Everything we could have wanted from a VRBO rental was at this property. The sound of the river was wonderful and relaxing. Gary was very helpful and attentive.
