Casa del Pastor is nestled in the north pasture of a 137 year-old Central Texas ranch. Built entirely of adobe and decorated in New Mexico style, this spacious 1,000 sq foot cabin is encircled by a porch where guests may watch the sun travel, the moon rise and observe the abundant birds and wildlife of Central Texas. Our flock of Rambouillet sheep and herd of cattle and family of donkeys might even meander by. Hikers are welcome to wander to their hearts' content during daylight hours. This secluded hideaway allows visitors to enjoy plenty of blue skies by day and bright Texas stars at night -- far from the light pollution of the city and perfect for stargazers. As dusk falls on the adobe, guests might hear the gurgling song of wild turkeys or the faraway yip of coyotes, while later a raccoon, an opossum or a family of skunks might pay a nocturnal visit. Privacy and relaxation are the hallmarks of our ranch cabin getaway.

Casa del Pastor is the perfect hideaway for a couple's weekend, a family vacation or a girls' weekend. Along with hiking and enjoying the quiet seclusion and abundant wildlife, guests may visit nearby communities and attractions, such as the Colorado River, Colorado Bend State Park, historic San Saba and Lampasas. Both San Saba and Lampasas boast wineries and ample shopping. Enchanted Rock and Longhorn Cavern are also nearby, and Llano, just west of San Saba, is worth the trip for history buffs and shoppers -- or for those who would like to kayak the Llano River.

Casa del Pastor features a fully-equipped kitchen, a queen size bed, a comfortable standard-sized futon, an antique claw-foot tub with shower and an old ranch lavatory. We also provide a laundry room with a washer and dryer. A satellite TV is available for those who need a reality check, but we have no Wifi connection. Although the tap water is safe to drink, we provide bottled water, also coffee and tea. Visitors should remember that our location is 15 miles from the nearest grocery store, so picking up groceries, especially for the first night, is recommended. We provide granola bars and nuts in case you need a snack. Your hosts live on the property, about a mile from the cabin, and are available to help in any way.

If you are interested in enjoying the great outdoors at the leisurely pace of this charming and picturesque part of the Hill Country, Casa del Pastor is definitely for you!

A gem of a place!

Lovely cabin, lovely hosts, remote location on a gorgeous ranch, convenient to Colorado Bend State Park and other places. This place needs to be made more visible by VRBO, it did not show up in several of our searches.

Relaxing Getaway

My husband and I picked this house because it was so near to Colorado Bend State Park, San Saba and Fiesta Winery. Great place to relax without TV, there were alot of DVDs to choose from and watched a couple of old Westerns. The bed is very comfortable and snacks and coffee were provided. A great place. We enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here to hike at Colorado Bend for a few days. We wanted somewhere quiet and off the beaten path and that’s exactly what we got. If you are looking for a weekend to unplug I would highly recommend!

A Tranquil Retreat

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the charming Casa del Pastor, an adobe cabin nestled on a ranch in Lometa, Texas. Our experience was nothing short of wonderful and relaxing, a true testament to the warm hospitality provided by our hosts, Rebecca and Carlton. Their attention to detail and dedication to ensuring our comfort made our getaway memorable. We are immensely thankful for the serene retreat they have created and cannot wait to return to this slice of Texan paradise.

Excellent, peaceful retreat.

The casa is a fine spot to escape and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Added bonus was a meteor shower the first night across the clear sky. Very welcoming hosts. Easy to find.

Just what we needed

My boyfriend and I needed a quiet place to unwind for a few days and this was perfect. The cabin is very isolated and quiet and an excellent location for visiting nearby Colorado Bend State Park. The cabin has everything you need, is clean and quiet, and was reasonably priced. We were very happy with this spot.

Wonderful, Restful Stay

A most enjoyable stay at a very nice rustic cabin with modern conveniences. Very much away from everything on a working ranch. We really enjoyed our visit. First-rate hosts. (FYI: despite being in a very rural setting we had pretty good 5G T-Mobile coverage inside the cabin.)

About the host

Hosted by Carlton & Rebecca Britton

Host profile image
We are educators and lived in Lubbock for 33 years before retiring on the family ranch. Rebecca was a high school English teacher, and Carlton was a professor at Texas Tech University with a specialty in range management. We were both raised on sheep ranches, and sheep continue to be one of favorite avocations.

Why they chose this property

Our adobe cabin is nestled into the north pasture of a family ranch that was settled by Rebecca's great grandfather, William Mark Wittenburg, in 1879. William sailed to the Germany in 1854 with nothing but the clothes on his back and a shepherd's license. He eventually settled in Lampasas County and is credited with being among the first to bring fine wool sheep to Texas. The property and tradition of raising sheep was passed down to his children, grandchildren, and now great grandchildren.
We started building Casa del Pastor in 2002 with the help of friends and the Olivarez family of Lampasas, and it took about nine years to complete.

What makes this property unique

Growing up in New Mexico, Carlton lived in an adobe and was very much influenced by adobe architecture, so he wanted to bring a little taste of New Mexico to our Texas ranch. Casa del Pastor, built and decorated in Territorial New Mexico style, is constructed completely of adobe bricks; door and window casings are made of three- inch timbers. An eight-foot porch encircles the entire adobe, providing ample space to relax and enjoy nature's beauty. Inside guests will find a fully-equiped kitchen, laundry room and a spacious living room, bedroom and bathroom. The claw-foot bathtub (with retro-fitted shower) is a family heirloom, and the old bathroom sink is from a West Texas ranch.
