Magical Place - loved the pond!

There's something undeniably magical about property starting from the private, wooded road to the charming antique house (1790) with its hidden staircases (3!) and beautiful original architectural details. The rooms are spread out enough that everyone had somewhere they could hang out, either together or on their own. My favorite bedroom is what appears to be a recent attic conversion with its own private large bathroom. Very charmingly done! The kitchen is small but has had some updating, very functional, but we found a max of two people in the kitchen at once was most comfortable. We enjoyed the outdoor shower after our many trips to the pond. Speaking of the pond... it's a huge wow. Very serene, hardly any people, crystal clear, warm like a bathtub in August. I think we spent most of the week just floating around out there and hanging out on the dock. Kids had a great time with the kayaks and paddle boards. They even tried doing a little fishing. We definitely made some incredible memories on Ryder pond. Overall, the house is great for at least 2 families to share. It could definitely use more air conditioning units, specifically in the dining/kitchen area. Most of the bedrooms have window units which kept the sleeping areas cool and comfortable. The smaller rooms were a little more challenging, but fans helped. What people need to know is this is a very old house and while it has had a lot of updating (dishwasher, washer and dryer among many other modern conveniences) it has steep staircases that might be challenging for older folks. The house is full of antiques and had has an entire small pantry room full of bowls, platters, pots and pans. I happen to love old houses and this one was a treasure. We definitely plan on returning to this magical place.

Idyllic spot

This is a lovely antique farmhouse with all its charms in an idyllic wooded setting, just off route 6 but seems a world away. We loved the outdoor fireplace where we could gather for dinner and roasting s’mores. The short walk through the woods to the pond was lovely, and our kids liked nothing better than paddling around the pond and swimming to the raft. A peaceful escape!

Labor Day Lazin'

This is an old New England house, with plenty of room, and lovely rambling plantings. Our activities focused on the pond, accessed by a classy new staircase, and the terrace/fireplace area. We know the area, and would definitely stay here again. There is good internet access.

Beautiful historic home with private pond access

We had a fabulous week at Katherine and Mike’s house in the National Seashore on the Wellfleet/Truro border. The house is a historic 1800s home with lots of nooks and crannies that was perfect for a set of 2 grandparents, 4 adults and one grand baby. Lots of outdoor space and a path to Ryder pond with a dock, canoe, paddle oars, kayak and rowboat. The house and kitchen are well equipped and the bedrooms are separated nicely from each other each with their own air conditioner. Katherine and Mike are great hosts and it was a perfect week.

Perfect setting for family and friends

If you are considering this property I highly recommend it. We stayed for a week with friends. It was 4 adults and 4 children ages 10-16. There was plenty of room. The check in was effortless. The kitchen was small but very well stocked with pots/pans etc. There are lots of sleeping accommodations. There are plenty of bathrooms, but only 2 showers (which was no problem as long as you keep it in mind). There is an awesome large table everyone can sit at for meals. There is a comfy den like room with large couches to relax on. There is a second living room that people can hang out in as well. The upstairs has a large room with 4 single beds and a bathroom. It’s perfect for kids with a large dollhouse and a TV for them. The outside is the best part. There is a gorgeous yard with nice picnic tables. Best of all is the amazing outdoor fireplace with comfy chairs and another picnic table. Perfect for late nights relaxing with friends and family. The grounds are well kept, but natural. There is very pretty lighting along the paths. Just through the woods is a path that leads to the lake. The lake is perfect for families with older children. The dock has chairs for relaxing while you watch the kids play. The lake bottom is sandy and not slimy. There are paddle boats, kayaks etc. Our kids loved playing in the lake. It does get deeper, but it is calm and clear and perfect for swimming. The location is ideal. Minutes away from so many different beaches on the ocean and bay side. Just down the road are awesome restaurants and a very nice town market. There is also a great drive in movie theater about 7 minutes away. The house is from about 1810? It had so much character and beautifully maintained antique details. Our kids loved all the different nooks. The owners were friendly and helpful. Quickly available by text should we have any questions. We found the place perfect for sharing with good friends. It strikes the perfect balance between relaxing and still close to activities to keep you busy. I really hope we can find our way back here very soon!

Great rental for every day pond swimming and fun

This house is a great place for families who enjoy privacy and frequent access to pond swimming without the hassle of crowds, driving, and parking. The outdoor shower is also fabulous. This was our third year renting this property for two weeks specifically because of the pristine and private pond. It's hard to beat. Renters should be aware, though, that the house is pretty spare on comfort amenities. We don't want to discourage future renters, but in our party, older family members and those used to greater comfort wished the house was furnished more with "vacationers escaping the hassles of every day life" in mind. (A railing leading down to the pond would be helpful for small kids and older people, as well.) But again, you can't beat this place if you value privacy and quiet pond swimming.

House is located at t the end of a quiet private road, with amazing privacy outdoor patio and grill

House is a 1790 farm house that lends it's charm to those who stay there. For those who love to swim, there is an amazing pond within a five minute walk from the house, which is equipped with a kayak, a dock and raft. For those who love fresh water swimming, this is your place to rent.

Lovely old farmhouse on a gorgeous pond

We had a really special time at Katherine and Mike's farmhouse. Other reviewers are right -- it's old, but for us that was actually nicer than some sleek new construction. It really feels like the old Cape here, and it's neat to be in a place with such history. Having the large private grounds is very nice. The pond is, of course, ideal. We swam constantly. Katherine and Mike couldn't have been friendlier, responding to all our various needs and questions quickly, and going out of their way to ensure we were comfortable. There are only a few drawbacks worth knowing about, all manageable in our experience: The kitchen is pretty tight for a large group, esp. one that cooks a lot. Since we cooked outside often it wasn't a huge deal. (They've recently renovated it, so it's quite a nice kitchen -- just small.) The bedroom layout might be awkward for some groups, since the two biggest rooms are connected. It's no problem if you all know each other well. Finally, the stairs are a bit narrow and steep, which could be an issue for elderly people or young kids, but we just put up a gate and we were fine. In all, these are fairly minor issues, expected in an older house, and nothing that outweighed the pleasure we got from it. They're the only reason we didn't give it 5 stars. Anyway it's a truly special place run by lovely, warm people in a perfect environment. We definitely hope to return.

Perfect family vacation spot! Biked to beach, swam in the warm pond steps from the beautiful home

This gorgeous, private property was perfect for our family vacation! Located 15 minutes from Provincetown, we enjoyed --- biking to the beach in the morning, swimming in the warm, sandy-bottomed Cape Cod kettle pond or kayaking around the pond in the afternoon, drinking cocktails overlooking the pond on the dock watching the native birds and fish in the early evening, freshening up in the out door shower ( a total hit with the kids!! ) grilling sumptuous fish dinners purchased in Wellfleet ( via bike!) , jaunting after dinner to P-Town for gelato and people watching and FINALLY devouring late-night S'mores by the stately, outdoor fireplace. We all would stagger through the beautiful, historic Cape home to our charming rooms for great night's sleep! Katherine and Mike accommodated our specific requests and were available to answer questions. If you enjoy the outdoors and historic properties, this will be the perfect place for you!

Amazing Family Friendly Week on the Cape

We have just returned from a magical week at the Ryder Pond home. We were two families of four (so four adults and four children in total), and the kids loved the house, the surrounding property, the outdoor picnic area, showering outdoors every evening, and most of all swimming in the pristine pond. (Two of our kiddos are just learning to swim, and there is a shallow sandy area that was perfect for them, while the older kids could jump off the dock and splash around.) The house is a charming, historic structure (there are 18th-century deeds in the house), and the entire vacation felt like traveling to another era. We strongly recommend to other families--it worked well for our large group. The kitchen is small (as others have noted), but perfectly usable, and we grilled outdoors every evening in any case. The owners are very helpful and accessible. A gem!

Perfect Summer Getaway

This home provides the perfect Wellfleet getaway. As you drive off route 6 down a dirt country lane you travel back in time and pull up to a beautiful 1700's home surrounded by nature. This home is unique with lots of character allowing you to relax and bring you back to a simpler time. The bedrooms are comfortable and my family enjoyed picking out their favorite bed to sleep in. The large dining table is a great place to sit and gather for dinner and the old fireplace adds lots of charm and a great conversation piece. This home has amazing outdoor spaces, the outdoor fireplace was great to have fires and cookouts, the outdoor shower is one of the best ones I've ever used with great water pressure and a view of the stars at night. This home is located on one of Wellfleets best ponds and we spent most days swimming, canoeing, fishing and exploring around the pond. This home feels like you are in a remote area but is very convenient to Wellfleet center, Truro, and Provincetown.

Good house for large groups.

We enjoyed the house a lot. It is very convenient to Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet. The lake is great and the kids enjoyed it a lot. Nice fireplace outside for hanging out at night. The kitchen might be small and there's only one shower inside, but overall we managed and had a great time. The hosts are very helpful and friendly.

Beautiful Antique Home On Fresh Water Pond

We really enjoyed our stay on Ryder Pond. There was pure pleasure in coming home from a day at the beach or a bike ride and taking a swim in this warm, clear, sandy-bottomed pond. The canoe and kayak, and those wonderful Adirondack chairs made for many blissful hours on the pond. The outside fireplace was a wonderful addition where the entire family could gather in the evenings while grilling and eating and talking into the night. And then there is the antique house, dating back to the 1700s. We really enjoyed being in such an old home with so many doors, fireplaces and hidden spaces. The dinning room is large with ample seating for 12. Other rooms were smaller but all was charming. (By the way, I disagree with the reviewer who complained about having to walk through one room to get to another - we had no problem with this - or that one bedroom is too small - it is more than big enough for an adult on vacation when there are so many other spaces to be in.) The owners are clearly taking great pride in restoring the home. They have painted many of the rooms bright, cheerful colors. The kitchen is small but we managed even with many intense cooks. I would certainly recommend this rental and we would love to return.

Great week on Cape Cod!

Our family of 7 was very comfortable during our visit to Cape Cod. The property is quiet and private. My kids and my 78 year old father LOVED the pond and swimming dock. We used the provided beach chairs and boogie boards and really liked the outdoor shower. The owners were very quick to respond to a minor request. It was a wonderful week!

Highly satisfied

I was very satisfied with this rental, the owner came to the house on the first day she received me gave me all details of the house, she guided me through it and it's very nice, it was a cold week but it was nice they have a pond that is private and even an outside chimney and a barbecue spot, very large parking area, I really liked the house like I said nice owner she told me that if at any moment I needed help with anything house related I could call her, I recommend this property

Perfect!

I found this historic antique home quite charming and completely comfortable for our stay! It is tucked into the woods of the National seashore conveniently located right next to a secret pond. The pond is beautiful! Water temp perfect for swimming & kids playing. The kitchen was newly remodeled with new stove, dishwasher, and counter tops beautifully done - plenty of room for our two families to cook meals. The two bathrooms in the house one in the back of the house and the other one off the dining area were clean and up to date the best though was the enclosed spacious outdoor shower! Loved using the outdoor fireplace to sit & relax and look at the stars - tables/chairs and grills were conveniently located. The owners Kathryn & Mike were most helpful!

Great getaway

I enjoyed staying at this summer rental for many reasons. One, the spacious yard was such a treat for my children. They could play outside for hours, be adventurous and care- free, and run down to the pond with a moments notice. Two, the outdoor shower and the brilliant outdoor patio/BBQ area is a great way to host a Cape Cod shindig with family or friends who may be in the area. Third, the house is unique, simple, and relaxing. You are taken back in time to simple values. It's overall a great location with easy access to the world famous beaches of Wellfleet and its quaint center. You honestly don't need to go anywhere though while you are here! The pond is magical, the quaintness is just what one should be looking for during a summer vacation on Cape Cod. Time to book it again!

Tranquility

When I arrived at this charming pond home I knew it was just the perfect place to leave the world behind and that was exactly what my husband and three children did. We enjoyed the quaintness, the simplicity and the quiet, restful stay at this historic home. I've been summering on Cape Cod for over 40 years and I would recommend this vacation rental to ppl near and far. I look forward to venturing this way again in the summer of 2015 where we can BBQ outside in our own private greens, wake to pick fresh blueberries to add to blueberry pancakes, kayak in the calm crystal kettle pond just footsteps from your front door. This is just a glimpse into he property. The inside has just as much charm and character. Peaceful sleeps in cozy rooms. The kids have their own wing! I see how Henry David Thoreau lost himself in his writing on The Cape and that's what one should feel when they visit this property. Come back to simple, pleasurable life. Go! You won't want to leave!

Disappointing

There are so many issues with this house its hard to know where to start. However, I'll limit myself to those things that I believe would be of primary interest to would-be renters: - Yes, the house sleeps 9, but most of them won't sleep too well. One of the bedrooms - with four of the beds - can only be accessed by walking through another bedroom which is itself right off of the house's main room/dining room. That means up to four individuals tramping through at any time. - Another bedroom, which seems like a small converted store room is also right off of the main room/dining room. And as none of the bedroom doors shut tight or are more than the thinnest of wood doors, every single word, light step, or eating activity in the main/dining room is broadcast directly into these two adjacent rooms. In the pictures of the dining room, you'll notice all the doors are shut - this is likely because if the opened them, you'd see the beds right there inside the doors! - The main bathroom (shown in pictures) is extremely small, old, and of marginal use for all but the most basic of needs. - The kitchen is also extremely small and old, and cooking for the 8 people we had at the house was a real challenge. Also, don't expect to have anyone trying to clean while someone else is cooking, as there isn't even enough room for two people to actually work side-by-side in the kitchen. As you can actually from the pictures, no one can possible use the sinks while someone is cooking on the stovetop. - The picture of the dining room is accurate in another way - its virtually impossible for 8, much less 9, to eat in. By combing through the house, we found enough chairs for 7 to use, but that left no chairs in any of the bedrooms. - There is no closet space to speak of anywhere- nor anywhere to hang any clothes in most rooms. - The house is OLD. It could certainly be considered charming, but its also creaks and bangs to such an extent that no one is going to sleep though any activity being conducted anywhere else in the small, tight living quarters. - I have family on the Cape, and have been there often, but its been years since have had such a 'rustic' experience there. Overall, if one os OK with that, it might be nice for a couple or small family of 3 or 4 who could maybe spread out a bit and doesn't do much cooking. Otherwise, its pretty unpleasant.
