About this property

Enchanting Beach Villa- Snorkeling, Fishing, Kayaking Costa Maya Reefs

Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas is a charming beach front villa located just 5 miles south of Mahahual. It is a tranquil place far from mainstream tourism and full of options for discovery, adventure and relaxation. Enjoy activities like swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, beach combing, or bird watching.

Our two-story vacation home has been tastefully decorated and furnished and is designed to accommodate up to six guests. It is rented as a single unit only. You never have to share our exceptionally wide private beach (210 feet) or its amenities with other guests! This is an eco-friendly, self-sustained house. Our water supply is maintained by rainwater collection and electricity is generated with a solar-electric power generation system.

The villa sits sea-side on an extraordinarily large (1.5 acre) and delightfully landscaped beach lot. It is very secluded and private. The caretaker casita, with the caretaker family providing assistance and 24/7 security, is in 200 feet distance from the main house and neighboring lots are not developed. For additional privacy and security access to the property has been restricted with lateral fences and a fence at the beach road. The beach road does not cut through, but is set behind the property in 200 feet distance from the main house.

The house has two full bathrooms with warm water showers. Downstairs the house features a large kitchen- living-dining area with a fully equipped kitchen. A beautiful catalox (a native hardwood) dining table and rustic spiral stairs around a hardwood tree trunk set special accents to this room. Custom-build very large arched mahogany windows open to the ocean side for unobstructed views and optimal ventilation. The tiled front porch is shaded by the balcony and is our favored breakfast spot. A seating area behind the house is accessible through the back door. Here you can fully enjoy the beauty of our lush tropical garden and jungle park and observe birds and other animals. It also provides tranquility and shade during exceptionally windy days.

Upstairs our villa features two cooling-fan equipped bedrooms, each with a double bed and a roll-out bed and one of the rooms with an additional couch. A small locker room for storage of suitcases and cloths also contains a security lock box for valuables. Independently from both bedrooms, you can step out onto our spacious shaded balcony, which is a favorite place for hanging out in hammocks and catching a fresh sea breeze during hot afternoon hours. It is also a great place for an unforgettable moonlight dinner and to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over the Caribbean Sea. Stairs from the balcony lead to the tiled rooftop patio, which offers panoramic Caribbean views. It is ideal for tanning during the day (nude sun-bathing possible here) and for fantastic stargazing during the night (hence the name of the house).

Our private beach has many fruit-bearing coconut palms and for additional shade we build a palm-thatched hut for guests to recover from the intense rays of the Caribbean sun. You can string a hammock to one of our Sea-Grape trees and relax listening to the waves or reading a good book.
Instead of converting our beach into a sand desert– unfortunately the common practice at most beach properties– we landscaped our beach by retaining and planting native salt-tolerant plants that interlace in large patches open sand areas. These patches are not only much more beautiful, but also prevent erosion and provide diverse habitats for beach-dwelling animals.

The drop off at our beach is very good and in contrast to other Costa Maya beaches you don’t have to wade through very shallow water for hundreds of feet before you reach greater water depths, but you can swim and snorkel directly from the beach. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in front of Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas is arguably the finest snorkeling site in the Mahahual region. Minimal tide action, the lack of currents and of high waves provide for safe swimming and kayaking conditions, even for beginners.

In addition to free bottled water, weekly changed fresh towels and linens, propane gas, board games, CD player, etc., we also offer special amenities to make a beach vacation enjoyable: These include the free use of kayaks, life vests and snorkeling gear, an outdoor grill and the availability of a large and diverse library that includes a comprehensive collection of Caribbean and Mexico nature guides.

Last but not least, our very friendly caretaker will be always happy to assist with your problems, questions and special needs and to help making your visit at Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas an unforgettable pleasant vacation.

Attentive hosts, good stay!
Reservations and communication were easy and clear. Caretaker Oscar was super friendly and helpful. The kitchen was a bit sparse— no spices, oils, etc.—but the house had everything else needed for relaxing. Appreciate the snorkeling gear and guidebooks.

Incredible place to match an incredible location
Absolutely thrilled in every aspect of our visit here… the location, the house, snorkeling, the amenities and more than anything… the friendliness and attention of the caretaker and his family! Went above and beyond every expectation we had in order to make sure we enjoyed our stay! I am definitely coming back as often as I can

Perfect Quiet Getaway
Such a privilege to stay in this beautiful casa on the beach. It was quiet, private and peaceful. Kitchen had everything you need. The beach was well maintained and you can snorkel right from the shore. We used the kayaks to get to the reef to snorkel. Magical time!

Secluded paradise
From the very beginning of reserving this property the owner was in great communication. Throughout the stay, and after our stay the excellent communication continued. The property itself felt like a post card of tropical paradise. The secluded location was a great "get away" from the tourist heavy coastal towns of the Yucatan. The snorkeling and kayaks available were all in great shape. I highly recommend going out with them! The star gazing roof was amazing. I live in a major US city, and to see this many stars was almost disorienting! The comfortable chairs on the roof made it hard to peel yourself away form the sea of stars! The kitchen is somewhat primitive, but has all the basic needs to make good meals. There is a fridge, 2 burner stove, sink, pots and pans, dishes, silverware, and plenty of counter space. The beach on their property is in great shape! The caregiver keeps it clean and inviting. There is plenty of lounging areas all along the beach on the property. The caretaker Oscar, and his wife, were super nice, helpful, and made us feel like friends! They were also intuitive to know how much attention/privacy we wanted. The home owner is lucky to have them! The ONLY complaint is also one of the things that makes it great. The beach road to get there is in rough shape (partly due to excessive rain during the dry season). This is good because you don't many other tourists coming to the area. If you want a remote beach paradise, this is it!

Wonderful
The villa is really lovely, it is very private and peaceful. It is really worth the drive from Cancun to get away from the crowds. Rudolph and caretaker Darvey were very helpful and accommodating. The time of year that I came was not the best because the sargassum had already taken over the beach but this is a problem all along the entire coast unfortunately so I would recommend to be mindful of that when choosing a time to come to the area - Rudolph made me aware of this when I booked and said that I could have a refund and check out early if I wanted so that was very kind of him but I still really enjoyed the property and would love to visit again! :)

Beach house
Mahahual is a great little village but now growing due to cruise ship visits. The house is about 8.5 k from the village down a very bad road with many huge potholes but we made it a few times in and out! The house itself was ok but it seems like it needs some TLC and maintenance. There is no oven or microwave so plan around that. There are many books however in a humid climate they suffer. The grounds were landscaped but are now very messy & need to be cleaned. Unfortunately we didn’t have hot water during our 3 day stay but the caretaker tried to fix it. Hayhu restaurant (south) is excellent and the Travel In’ restaurant was great. You have to call them 24 hours in advance & select your food. We didn’t get in the water much due to storms.

Great stay at a very nice spot
We had a great stay at Mahahual Beach House. It is a big fully equipped house with a great roof terrass and a privat beach. The caretaker is very friendly and helpful, the guarddogs very friendly and the artificial reef (build by the houseowner) amazing. Therefore, that you can use the kajaks you can go for snorkeling and relaxing in the beach palapa or at the big balcony, holidays a extremly relaxed and quite and you have a lot of time for the family (in our case). It is necessary to make the proper grocery in Tulum because in Mahahual you have only small mexican shops where you get fresh fruit and vegetables and tortillas but not prepacked or pre-cooked meals. The beach road between Mahahual and the house could be a little rough with deep water filled potholes but is more an adventure than a problem. And it is important to bring enough mosquito spray with you otherwise you will be eaten by these little tiny beasts. All in all read the more than useful recommendation of the owner on the website and do what he suggest and you will have a brilliant stay away from every tourist destination. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend everybody who is looking for a quite, naturally and well equipped holiday destination.

Great place, great people.
This is a special place. If you love nature and love to feel a bit off the beaten path, than this is for you. Rudolf the owner was incredible. The area hsd some sargassum and he contacted me beforehand and offered full refund. I am so glad we did not take him up. This shows what an honest good guy he is. He was so concerned about my vacation. The sargassum was there but the great caretaker and me forked a way through it to snorkel and fish. Not so bad at all. House is really cool and eclectic. Neat decorations. Lots of books. Cool staircase. Bug nets. No ac but fans are good enough. A fewbugs so the nets were a must. If i had have a critique it would be that a couple mod cons would add greatly. Namely an electric blender and an electric toaster (their are racks for making toast over stove). Cool place, cool people, cool location.

Lovely and tranquil seaside escape
We rented this house with another couple for a three night weekend stay. We choose this house due to location, size and pet friendliness. The location was great. It was approximately 5 miles outside of Mahahual...just far enough to be "away from it all" but close enough to go into town to eat on occasion, The kitchen was fairly well equipped for cooking simple meals. We used the outdoor grill for most of our cooking and had plenty of dishes, glasses, utensils, etc. A nice addition to the kitchen would be a lighter and dish soap (bring your own). The outdoor areas were very nice. My favorite spot was the upstairs palapa off the bedrooms. It had a table and two hammocks. The downstairs porch was also very nice and we spent many hours here reading and eating our meals. There were some very nasty yellow flies that caused some terrible bites. We didn't encounter any problems with mosquitoes. We used the kayaks to go out to the reef to snorkel and enjoyed having a "private beach". Our dogs enjoyed running around on the beach and got along well with Rudolphs two dogs, which were very sweet and friendly. The bedrooms upstairs were sufficient for our needs. Nothing fancy, but we slept well with the windows open and the breeze keeping us cool. Darvey the caretaker did a nice job of letting us know about the specifics of being in a solar powered house, He was always around, but never intrusive. If we needed something (we needed extra drinking water), he was quick to respond. The house was clean and the property was nice and clean. The beach was raked daily. We would definitely return to this property. Be sure to bring your own groceries, soap, etc.

This place is truly beautiful; each detail of the decor has been lovingly thought out. The surrounding nature and the night sky are spectacular. The caretaker Darvey and his family were absolutely wonderful! They took great care of us, even going above and beyond after my dad left his mandolin to make sure he got it back. It is definitely very secluded and the drive to Mahahual is rough but if you are looking for an eco jungle/beach experience this is perfect!

Perfect place to relax!
Let me start by stating that this property is the perfect beach home for those who want peace and quiet. We enjoyed the location (it's 15mins. outside of the main town of Mahahaul). It was private and the grounds were so beautiful! The caretaker, Darvey, was awesome! He made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. Gorgeous Sunrises
I just spent 12 days at Rudolf's place, and it is just as magical and beautiful as I have hoped. If you are expecting a 5-start all inclusive hotel, this might not be for you, but if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy peace and quiet, on your own beach, this is perfect. First, pros: the fridge is updated to the new full size fridge, not in the pictures, so that was great. I was working remotely, and internet was fast enough for that (not a given in all places in Mexico). A bit slow if you want to stream Netflix on two devices at once, but more than enough for work. Fully stocked kitchen, everything one might need. We have not used the grill, but it was available as well. Kayaks, snorkeling gear - all available and just as in the pictures. Cons: mosquitos on days when there was no wind. Bring all the Deet you can carry, locally bought Off didnt help, I think they actually enjoyed that stuff. I do have a mosquito problem - they find me in a crowd or on a deserted island and select just me from a group of people, which lead to a healthy doze of paranoia, which I was glad for in this case - I brougth every anti-mosquito poison I could think of with me. On windy days they were not an issue at all, and the screens on all the windows and the mosquito nets on the beds help. Out of 12 days I think there were only 2 when they were an issue, and mostly because my partner left the door open after dark, which was a huge no. On the other hand, got to meet 3 tiny house gekkos that were hiding before that, but came out to hunt the bugs. Thinking of getting me one for my home in Cali now. Car helps, but there are taxis in town if you decide not to rent. For longer stays, go to Chedraui in Cancun, Tulum or Chetumal, depending where you are coming from, and stock up with necesseties, although unless you are very picky about what coffee and liquor you like, you will find most necessities in local stores in Mahahual, just go to the locals side of the town, not the tourist center - prices are higher there. I cant really express how trully gorgeous this place is. I woke up every day before 7 not to miss any sunrises. Stars a so much brighter than anywhere else I've been! And the self-made reef, although took me 11 out of 12 days to find, is worth the effort - you can enjoy snorkeling and fish watching without leaving the property. Would absolutely recommend and I hope to come back there again one day

The house is a perfect place to escape and be in touch with nature. But, if you want to swim, enjoy the kayaks, seat infront of the sea and have a relax walk along the beach,I have to be honest about that experience of the private beach of the house. Unfortunately it is full of Sargassum, not only along the beach but also inside of the sea, so the experience of using the beach and sea may be very different as you could expect from the photos and the descriptions. It is just impossible to clean it every day and be able to enjoy it. It is not possible to walk along the beach, swim and even go inside with the Kayaks. Sargassum is all over the place. Though, the property is beautiful, as you can see in the photos, is clean and in excellent conditions. It is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy. Being so close to the sea fulfills your soul!!! Darvey (Caretaker) and his family are very helpful, sweet and very nice at all times. Rudolf, the owner, was very nice and always available to get in touch with. From Mahahual town, the house is about 20-25 mins (the road is challenging) I suggest renting a SUV if you don't want to worry about your car. Regardless of the beach experience we had a great time.

The house was everything promised. The host could not have been more accommodating.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, even though the weather did not cooperate thus limiting our time in the water. The house and grounds have been carefully put together over years and are well attended to by Darvey and family. During our stay Sargasso grass was collecting all along the coast. This was a bit of an inconvenience getting into the water. Once one negotiated the first ten meters, it wasn't a problem. On days when the water wasn't too choppy, we thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling around the artificial reef Rudolf constructed about 100 meters from shore. The Mayan ruins at Chacchoben were more extensive than we had anticipated, and we also enjoyed a boat tour on Lake Bacalar. Such excursions are best undertaken on days when no tourist ships are docked at Mahahual. The Travel In and Maya Luna were two good restaurants about half way to town. Once comfortably settled, one thinks twice about driving the bumpy road to town (c. half an hour) just for a meal. We also barbecued chicken at the house a couple of times. We highly recommend this place as a great alternative away from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism.

About the host

Hosted by Rudolf Jung

Host profile image
We are two families from Germany (by profession a biologist, an artist and medical doctors) who previously have been travelling widely. More than 25 years ago we discovered the enchanting beaches of south Quintana Roo, the area which is now called the Costa Maya. We came back to Mahahual every year ever since. In 1994 we purchased our beach property. After experimenting a few years with living on the beach in simple palm-thatched huts (palapas), we decided to build the house in 1999. Our experience with the local climatic conditions helped us to design a house that is enjoyable year-round and that can withstand strong tropical storms. Since 2001 we have been opening our villa for guests to rent.

Why they chose this property

First of all- we choose the Costa Maya, because we wanted a beautiful place that is as far as possible away from mainstream tourism, yet reachable from the US or from Europe within a reasonable amount of travel time. Within the Costa Maya area we looked for a property with good elevation, a good water depth at the beach that allows swimming, and a beach which has the barrier reef close to it and protecting it from high waves and currents. We choose our particular 210-feet wide and 300-feet deep lot for it mostly intact beach- and coastal jungle vegetation, because this gave us the opportunity to create -through careful landscaping- a lush tropical garden-park by maintaining native plants. Finally, this sparsely populated location 5 miles south of Mahahual attracted to us because it is close enough to town for easy grocery shopping and restaurant access, but far enough to avoid town tourist activities.

What makes this property unique

Our house is very secluded and private. The beach road is 200 feet behind the house, the property is 210 feet wide and neighboring properties are not developed. Since we never rent the house to a second party, guests will always exclusively enjoy our entire beach and our other amenities. The natural environment our property offers is without peers. A lush garden-park surrounds the house and is home to countless tropical animals and birds that can be observed. A freshwater pond is a special feature of our garden, providing drinking water for birds during the dry season and a breeding place for tree frogs. We maintain about one third of our 1.5 acres as a private coastal jungle reserve. Our land is therefore one of the few places in the Costa Maya with over 50 old-growth Chi’it palms (a protected palm, elsewhere almost extinct). Also our beach-area has been carefully landscaped by us and therefore retains beautiful patches of native salt-tolerant plants and flowers that not only prevent wind- and water erosion, but are also an invaluable habitat for beach-dwelling animals. The barrier reef in our area (5 miles south of Mahahual) is considered the best snorkeling site in the Mahahual area. Healthy coral gardens with huge brain and elk-horn corals and a large quantity of colorful fish and other marine life can be explored on the wave-protected side of this reef. Snorkel enthusiasts will appreciate our artificial reef, which can be visited in just 50 feet from the shore. While this site is easily accessible even by children or not so firm swimmers, it is teaming with almost all the same fish species that can be found in the barrier reef.
