The layout of the house was what we needed our family gathering. 8 people fit comfortably in the house, and the inside-outside design of the house was lovely (we spent a lot of time on the deck!). The owners left clear, easy-to-follow instructions for checking in. It was very clean when we arrived.
But it is clear this is a property purchased by managers for income, and that income doesn't go back into the house. Many lightbulbs were burned out. There were mice in the house (not completely unexpected, given the wooded location, but still a surprise inside a fully finished house - there didn't seem to be any sort of pest management on the property). Some patio chairs are broken, and the patio umbrella doesn't open. Multiple lamps in the house had broken switches, and multiple fans and air conditioning units did not work (and we needed them - it was 90 degrees the weekend we stayed!). The ignition button on the grill doesn't work, so you need to buy a lighter to start a flame. If you run out of propane in the grill, you are responsible for going into town to get a full tank; ditto for purchasing fans - this was particularly surprising, given that the last thing we want to do when staying in a vacation home with family we haven't seen for two years is run errands on behalf of the people we're renting from. It seems the owners of the house are simply that - owners, not hands-on managers. If they invested a little more into the upkeep of the house, it would be a real gem.
There's one major issue that can't be fixed by a handyman, and that's the four dogs living across the street. They barked ALL. the. time. It was constant, even through the night, so if you're a light sleeper and/or considering renting the property in the warmer months (when the windows will be open), be aware that you'll have that soundtrack playing in the background.
In all, this was fine. Not bad, not great - just fine. If you're looking for a rental that wows, this isn't really it. But if you just need a place to crash for a few nights, this will suffice.
