Rustic, family, waterfront cottage, on a private, protected cove offers peace and quiet. This cottage has been in our family for almost 40 years providing a relaxing vacation escape for all. Wildlife abounds in this natural setting with almost daily sightings of loons, great blue herons, muskrats, woodpeckers, chipmunks and turtles. Endless hours can be spent exploring the cove by canoe or kayak. The protected cove offers a safe place for kids to try their hand at canoeing while within sight of home. There is a bunk house,or 'bunkie' about 40 feet from the main cottage where kids enjoy staying, allowing adults their own space in the evening hours.

Lovely relaxing week on the Severn. Rustic cabin, perfect for family and pets. Good fishing and canoeing. Not great for swimming, but islands nearby good spot
This was a wonderful nostalgic cottage getaway. It was exactly what I was hoping for, for our little family. The use of the canoe, kayak and fishing boat was exactly what we wanted and needed. The cove this cottage is tucked away in is nicely sheltered and very quiet. We all enjoyed the paintings done by who we assume, are family members, as well as the assortment of games for the rainy days and later evenings.

Peaceful tucked away location
Very nice setting. Cottage is old school with retro furnishings. Not suitable for swimming, in a very weedy bay. Great fishing. Could use some updating, but overall happy with the experience there!
My sons and I spent a wonderful weekend fishing and relaxing at the Horn cottage. It was easy to find, and all the amenities were as promised. The bunkie and main cottage are bigger than expected. Lots of room for 6 outdoorsmen. Bring lots of supplies as you are 30 min from grocery. Bring a variety of lures theres a few species of fish waiting out there. Unplug from electronics and reconnect with your buds. Great time!
we enjoyed our stay very much, beautiful scenery and very peaceful place. canoeing was fun and we got lots of fish (pike) and fire pit was fantastic at night. nice view of the lake from inside the cottage. the only suggestion I have is a bout the fridge was too small and old and we couldn't fit all out food for the week. other thatn that it was great experience.
Steve was great with quick communication to answer all questions that made for no surprises when we arrived.
Great cottage with lots of space and lots to do - dart board and tons of games.
We loved the screened in porch for late night card games and you can’t beat the view!
The canoe was awesome to get out on and don’t let the weeds deter you - tons of fish! My 9 year old boys couldn’t get enough of pulling up all sorts of small fish and a large tasty largemouth bass right from the dock. Lots of big guys out in the river too!
For swimming (and bridge jumping) we hit up some beaches in Washago and Franklin Park nearby.
Thanks for sharing your place with our family, lots of great memories made.
It felt like being in a simpler time, very quiet and calming. No distractions of current world, just serenity. The property and view are breathtaking and fishing was outstanding!
This cottage is Rustic with a capital R. If you don't mind ripped and thred bare furniture . You will enjoy your stay. It was realitivly clean. Mattresses had stains that mattress covers would have prevented. New pillows would be good. We thankfully brought our own. Kitchen was well supplied but we thought every time the fridge came on it would be its last. New stove though. It would be really nice to have a wheel barrel at the top of the steep hill where you park your car to load up your luggage etc.when you arrive. Saving trips up and down a very steep incline. I'm glad I had my husband's shoulder to lean on or I would be spending my holiday in the parking area. The view was lovely. Thought I would miss Television and internet but we got by without it. It would be a good idea if Mr. Horn had a matinence man come and clean the outside of the windows etc. Because there is what looked like years of bugs/pine needles around the windows. All in all we had a good week but just not our type of cottage. If you like hunting camp type of accommodation this place is right for you.
Our overall impression of this property was disappointment. Every chair in the cottage was ripped, ants in the dishes, water is not drinkable, filthy rugs and chairs and general all around dis-repair and neglect.
Our family had a wonderful time fishing and hanging out on the dock. The property was as advertized. It was really great to just hang out together and enjoy nature. We LOVED the screened in porch and spent many hours there .
We had such a fantastic time! Beautiful view, wonderful boating, nice cozy 70ies vibe. I do wish I had brought my own duvet as the blankets provided were a lil old& scratchy , but that was a minor downside! Even the drive in was beautiful! Highly recommend as a nice place to get away for friends or family!
This property is the perfect place to relax. It is definitely “cottage” life. The screened in porch is a bonus on a rainy day to still feel like you are outdoors. Canoe was great and rowboat. Only downfall is swimming because of the seaweed. A kayak paddle available instead of oars would be a bonus too. Our family loved reading all the guest books dating back to the 70’s. It gave us a real feel for the family that has owned this cottage and many laughs and tunes in our head. Thanks Horns for sharing this place with renters!

family vacation
we were disappointed in the condition of the cabin. it had not been cleaned their was cob webs everywhere and the floors had not been sweep, dirt and broken glass on the floors. it was humid and the fans that where provided in the cabin were covered in dust. we had to clean them in order for them to work properly.
I would not recomend this cottage to anyone. It is a fishing HOLE nothing more. You had to take a fishing boat with only paddles and row way out in the lake .
TO expensive for what you get,
The cottage itself is quite nice, actually, and if you're paying attention, you'll notice that a lot of the paintings were painted by the owner (or a family member) and many are recognizable as views of the property itself. That was a fun discovery.
The boathouse was in great shape and it made access to the rowboat and the canoe very easy. One of the rowboat oars was loose and we couldn't find a single tool to fix it so we only took the rowboat out once. We enjoyed the dart board on the porch, and fishing off the dock was fun, too. All in all, a very good experience. 10/10 would rent this one again.
Our only complaint is that the barbecue tank was empty. We would've filled it ourselves if it hadn't been so big!

Cute, comfortable and rustic.
Very peaceful, quiet and tranquil cottage on a secluded mini bay. Cute and comfortable rustic would be the best way to describe it. Nice to see some upgrades being done, but nice also to see the original character and generations of memories built into this relaxing place.

Amazing property
We would give this property a five star but the cabin itself is very rustic making it a four star. That being said it was very clean. It was perfect for our five days of fishing. We caught enough fish for a feast of fish on our last evening. The sunrise and sunset are worthy of a five star as well. Will hopefully get a chance to vacation here again in the future!

About the host
Hosted by Steve Horn
My two siblings and I grew up in Ohio. Our family purchased the cottage in the early 70's when our mother was a teacher, and we spent the summers of our youth at the cottage, swimming, fishing and boating.
Why they chose this property
We spent our summers at the cottage, but now that we live so far away, we are unable to visit as often as we'd like. It holds such cherished memories that we can't bear to sell the place, so have decided to rent it during the weeks that it would otherwise go unused.
What makes this property unique
The Severn River offers the unique opportunity to endlessly explore the river in either direction, while maintaining the overall look and feel of a lake. When you hear the word 'river' many people immediately assume there is a strong current and moving water. There of course is a current but it is only detectable in the few, narrow areas of the river. At our location the river is about a quarter mile wide with no noticeable current. Our cottage is on a protected cove which offers cover from the wind and waves of more open water locations.
