About this property

Hacienda San Juan de La Vega, a B&B experience if you choose! Just ask!

Welcome to Casa Ana at Hacienda San Juan de La Vega… Visit our peaceful, private & charming ranch that offers all of the comforts of a beautiful B&B in your own villa. Just ask, we are here to meet your needs and make you happy during your stay in one of our 4 villas.

Visiting our ranch is about truly having an incredible new experience away from the big city yet close to all of the fantastic tourist activities in the Imbabura province, home of the famous Otavalo market & Cotacachi!

You are invited to come stay at Casa Ana one of our charming villas located on our ranch, “ Hacienda San Juan de La Vega” in San Pablo del Lago in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. This majestic hacienda (40+ hectares = 100 acres) is located at the end of a long Andean valley with a stream flowing through its green pastures. Along the stream you will find pools that are perfect for taking a little dip if you dare…the water is a bit chilly; however, extremely invigorating! Our nieces and nephews love this outdoor pastime. We also have horses on our property for those of you who enjoy horseback riding! If you really want to go back intime we invite you to take a horse drawn hayride... it is just a lot of fun!

A perfect retreat from wherever you find yourself at this moment… into a serene nature filled environment. A complete RETURN to NATURE, If you choose you can leave your cell phones, internet, emails & stress behind… its up to you! We do have wireless internet if you choose to use it.

On our property we have an organic vegetable garden. You are welcome to harvest from our garden for your meals. If you are a garden lover you are also welcome to work in our garden, which is my personal favorite pastime. Learn about permaculture farming methods that take being organic to a completely new level! We are in the process of implementing this philosophy of farming on our ranch. You are also welcome to gather eggs from our free-range chicken coop & enjoy fresh scrambled eggs for breakfast!

Some of our guest have enjoyed going to the local animal market / fair, where they purchase their own egg laying hens, baby chicks, bunny rabbits, guinea pigs & more... We have plenty of space on our ranch to make this possible, so just have fun bring your own farm animals back to our ranch. Your children will have a blast! P.S. The animals at the Animal Fair are very inexpensive... It´s just fun for your children! As an adult I love the experience myself.

For those of you who enjoy hiking, just step outside, there are amazing views and waterfalls to be discovered in the surrounding mountainside. Please see our facebook page for more pictures.

A little slice of heaven! Come discover it for yourself, you will not want to leave. We are surrounded by majestic volcanic peaks (all extinct), spectacular views, and fun tourist activities/adventures. This is a perfect retreat for a group of friends looking to get away for a long weekend or a family adventure looking for great memories. We have also had more than one family visit at a time, which we highly recommended. You can share one home (Casa Ana) or rent our other home (Casa Monica) located on the same ranch. You can find it advertised on Homeaway # 956566. Our hope is that you will take with you fond memories that will last a lifetime. Priceless!

If you would like to read some reviews about our property just email us and we will send you a link.

This Ecuadorian adventure is perfect for those of you who are interested in discovering Otavalo (the largest pre-Incan market in South America), Cotacachi(known for its incredible handmade leather goods), Cuicocha (a beautiful lake in the crater of an old volcano), el Cayambe & el Imbabura (volcanic peeks with picturesque views and great hiking). These are five of the most sought after tourist attractions in the Ecuadorian Andes. Our hacienda, “San Juan de La Vega,” is located within a 20 to 30 minute drive from these tourist hotspots. San Pablo del Lago is a local weekend getaway spot for Ecuadorians interested in aquatic sports and local cuisine.

Relaxing, Scenic, Comfortable...A Perfect Getaway!

I can't say enough about our long weekend at San Juan De La Vega! We were three adults and three children and had ample space -- both in the bedrooms and in the common areas. Our children (all three under 10) wandered the property safely, visiting the horses and stables, the garden, collecting eggs from the chicken house. They were always accompanied by the farm's friendly dogs, which may have been their favorite part! The owners and groundskeepers were super friendly and always available to help out, but also allowed us our privacy, ensuring we felt completely at home. We went on horseback rides with Darwin, took casual hikes to a waterfall (there are amazing views of Lago San Pablo as you ascend) and spent countless hours sitting, reading and playing games in front of both downstairs fireplaces -- kept lit and roaring by Darwin and Veronica from early in the morning until bedtime. The kitchen was bright and fabulous for cooking. A stocked "honor" pantry is there for guests who forget any key ingredients (you can either replace the items or leave money behind). Veronica made us a simple, tasty breakfast on our last morning, and taught us how to make empanadas de viento, which the kids loved preparing -- and eating! She also brought us amazing fresh honey harvested right on the farm that morning. The house can be chilly (as is true everywhere in the highlands) but the fires really warm the downstairs and the heavy duvets on all the beds kept us all super toasty at night. I felt in love with the bedding; the sleeping was fabulous! All in all, San Juan de la Vega offers a perfect escape from Quito for families. We will definitely go back -- and hopefully for a much longer stay!

Wonderful

My husband and I stayed 5 nights at Hacienda San Juan de La Vega. A wonderful experience! Staff and owners are so helpful and friendly. Scenery is spectacular. Surrounding communities are rich in culture. The house was very clean and well furnished. The property is gorgeous with a variety of flowers in constant bloom. Enriching activities, such as cheese making are some of the amenities of this property. Do yourself a favor; acquire experiences. This is the place.

Absolutely a exquisite experience

My wife and I recently traveled for the first time to Ecuador, staying in the historic district of Quito for two nights. We then rented a car and drove to Hacienda San Juan de La Vega. We were completely unprepared for the gorgeous scenery viewed from the equally unexpected high quality road. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by the staff of Hacienda San Juan de La Vega who became dear to our hearts in a very short time. One of the advantages of this property is that one can either choose to be totally independent, or choose to have the staff prepare the meals. The house in which we stayed was well equipped not to mention being a stunning timber and frame dwelling. Now the really good part. The setting is up a long valley nestled between two mountains with waterfalls at the end, absolutely a gorgeous setting. Approaching New Zealand kind of scenery. We took long walks on the 100 acres and on the dirt roads on either side of the valley. Also did horse back riding accompanied by a very competent Miguel. The staff also provided room service, lit the fire in the fireplace night and morning and was always attentive. Special thanks to Gissela who went out of the way to make sure our stay was pleasurable. Overall a very positive experience.

Amazing Experience with Exceptional Service

Everything about San Juan de la Vega was truly beyond our expectations! The staff made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Our daughter (8) asked to be woken up early several mornings to help Mauricio with the horses, and our son (6) loved helping with the chickens and cows. We made s'mores, rode horses, went on hikes, and just generally enjoyed the stunning setting. We also had Spanish lessons every weekday morning, arranged with an excellent teacher in Otavalo who came to the farm. This is a perfect place for immersing yourself in the Ecuadorian countryside. The house (Casa Ana) was extremely comfortable and spacious, and the huge fireplaces were a treat (along with the cloud-like beds)!

Christmas Stay

My family and I, first time visitors to SA and Ecuador, arrived Christmas night after our days in the Amazon, to a stunning hacienda, ablaze in lights, warmed with fireplaces, and greeted by Patricio and the rest of the staff. A wonderful dinner prepared by the staff was soon waiting for us on the table. The house, its furnishings, bedding, bathrooms, kitchen appointments, staff, and comforts are top tier and will please even the most discerning traveller. The valley that the hacienda sits in feels like an emerald green Shangri-La and I regret not having an additional day in my itinerary to just stay put. The added bonus of the house is the owner, Janine, who ever so patiently responded to my voluminous emails and questions, worked with me to set up a very busy itinerary for visiting the local sights. Her attention to detail was appreciated and followup during our stay was invaluable. The house, the staff, the location, and the owner combine to put Hacienda San Juan de la Vega as one of the very best rental experiences one could ask for.

Excellent place for a family stay

We were a family of 8, with lots of young adults and a couple middle aged folk. The setting is amazing, the beds super comfortable, showers beautiful. the fireplaces were amazing, and the staff were so attentive! Everyone enjoyed the hikes, cow milking and horseback riding. The meals we had cooked were very good, the kitchen fully functional. We all want to go back!

Great family time!

We visited San Juan de la Vega with our 4 children and another family of friends. I can´t say enough wonderful things about staying at this beautiful hacienda. Fun activities for everyone all day long! We were surrounded by nature, a peaceful environment, and assisted by the kindest people with every detail to make our stay unforgettable. Our children had the opportunity to experience life at the countryside at its fullest. Horse back riding, fetching fresh eggs, harvesting organic vegetables and even cow milking! Adults enjoyed sitting by the fireplace, cooking in the beautifully equipped kitchen and taking long, tranquil walks. Being only a two hour drive from the city of Quito, it makes a great destination to come back any time, even on any regular weekend. Janine and David are great hosts, always willing to help and come by for a nice chat. They have really thought of every detail, from fluffy pillows to fun games for the children to play. Hopefully, we will come back again soon! We are telling all our friends about this accessible yet magnificent experience for great family fun!

What an awesome hacienda.

We stayed in Casa Ana and I must say that the pictures online do not do the property justice. When we first arrived and walked into the house we were in AWE of how traditional, spacious, and beautiful the house is; it's modern and rustic at the same time. Plenty of room for up to eight people. Highlights of our stay: 1) The farm - We went out every day except for one day; it was the best day of the week. We milked cows, made cheese, made empanadas, went horseback riding, hiked to the waterfall, got eggs from the chicken coop for breakfast, and finished it off by watching a movie by the fireplace. As soon as the kids woke up every morning they would put on their boots and go outside to play in the creek or explore the farm; they loved the farm and enjoyed it more than any of the adults. 2) Darwin and Veronica - The caretakers were always alert to our comings and goings to make sure we had everything we needed. She took care of cleaning the house every morning and got up at 4AM to take us to milk the cows and teach us how to make empanadas; he made sure we had the fireplace going every night and took care of the horses when we went riding. They were awesome. 3) Wilmer the driver - I spent on average $100 per day on the days we went out. Two of the days we went far (2 hours away) and the other days we stayed close to Otavalo. If I had rented a car it would have cost at least that much. However, we were six so it would have been a tight squeeze and we would have been lost half the time. Wilmer has a mini school bus which was perfect for the large group. He knew exactly where we wanted to go and how to get there. On top of that he was very friendly and became a friend before the week was up. If you are planning a trip to Imbabura, Ecuador, this is by far the best place to stay. Janine, the owner, was very hospitable; she invited us to see her house, Casa Blanca, and introduced us to her husband and her parents. What an AWESOME vacation. I was posting pictures on Facebook every night and all my friends were so jealous; I can't wait to go back.

Awesome family vacation!

We were two families (4 adults and 5 children) and had wonderful stay in San Juan de la Vega. Everything at the hacienda is first rate from the well stocked kitchen to the the spacious and tastefuly decorated living spaces. Janine was a delight to deal with when we were planning our trip and it was a pleasure to meet her and her husband at the hacienda. Their staff was amazing! Veronica and Darwin made sure to keep the house and grounds impeccably clean. Veronica is an excellent cook... Be sure to try her spinach soup, even our kids loved it! Darwin took us horse back riding and hiking on Imbabura where we even saw condors! Janine set us up with a driver named Wilmer for our expeditions. He was very friendly and punctual and served as a natural guide on our expeditions with the added bonus that he would keep an eye on our kids at the market! Ask him to take you to eat cuy! We were surprised to find that the WIFI was as good as here in Montreal. Be sure to polish up your spanish. None of us ever took spanish lessons, but we were able to get by on the basic spanish we learned before this trip. ecuadorians are very kind and very patient when you speak with them so we always ended up understanding each other. We have stayed in many great vacation homes, but San Juan de la Vega is in a class apart because it is a destination in itself. Hiking, horseback riding, cooking with the garden's produce, getting fresh eggs in the morning... All priceless experiences that make this vacation getaway unique.

Dream rental for family vacation

This was the highlight of our family trip to Ecuador. A beautiful house set on a amazing property. Lots of things to do on the property which was full of animals, fresh vegetables, etc. We were greeted by a very nice couple who take very good care of the properties. The owners were also very kind and ensured that all our needs were taken care of. It was a fantastic cultural experience for our family. We highly recommend this place!

Incredible Family Vacation

My family was looking for a way to launch our 6 week tour of Ecuador and it was important for us to find a place that would allow us an escape from our day to day lives in California. San Juan De La Vega, was the perfect escape. We have four children ages 5 - 11 and they came to life during our stay. We rode horses with Darwin (one of the ranch hands who is always willing to help out), made cheese and empanadas with Veronica (another wonderful person), took day trips to a local waterfall within walking distance, hot springs, Lago (Lake)Majonda, and El Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world) with the handy driver, Wilmer, who made us feel at home. We are now heading off to the rainforest and feel relaxed and ready to go. I cannot recommend San Juan De La Vega enough.

One wonderful week in Lago San Pablo

What a fantastic week! We loved the house, property, and Staff! The house was absolutly phenomenal, with fire place in the master bedroom for a cozy end to the chilly evening! The caretakers made sure that our every need was attended to without being intrusive, and made sure that our stay was wonderful. We rode horses, picked fresh eggs for breakfast, and made meals from the fresh vegetables right out of the garden. This was truly one of the best vacations that I have ever had. Day Trips to nearby Otavalo and Mital del Mundo were great. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind and see nature in an organic farm setting, then this is the place for you. My only wish is that we could have stayed longer!

A unique time in Ecuador

My family recently visited Hacienda San Juan de La Vega and had a fantastic time. When my family showed me the pictures beforehand, I thought it looked beautiful. However, nothing could prepare me for how wonderful the Hacienda was! The scenery was stunning - mountains surrounded our house and the green farm pastures on the grounds were idyllic. Our family enjoyed walking into San Pablo - the nearby town. We visited the Hacienda Cusin for an occasional coffee. We had a chance to hike the grounds, milk cows, and pick vegetables from the garden. Veronica taught us how to make cheese and was very helpful to provide us with anything we needed. Some of our family were able to go horseback riding almost everyday! We enjoyed several sightseeing trips to nearby Otavalo, a lagoon, and some leather/wood working pueblos. The house was fitted with everything we needed - every kind of kitchen implement and plenty of movies to watch! This location was the perfect place for our family to experience Ecuador, meet local Ecuadorians, and experience a new culture. We thoroughly enjoyed our time. Janine was especially helpful in coordinating all of the details. I would recommend this location to anyone!

What a truly glorious part of the world!

My family just stayed in this beautiful place in December 2012. What an amazing experience it was! The hacienda is beautiful and very well thought out. There is everything you could need.....the kitchen probably was better equipped than my own at home!! The folks that work there are so nice and helpful and they had two roaring fires waiting for us the night that we arrived (it was late). Janine the owner had told them that we had not had time to pick up groceries and so we had a lovely breakfast made for us the next morning, with fresh warm bread rolls bought from the closest town. We asked if we could have these rolls other mornings and so every day we paid a couple of dollars to have them with our breakfast! The scenery out of the beautiful picture windows was breathtaking and it was good for the soul to be able to see the animals in the foreground!! The owner is a delight and we were glad to meet her and her husband; they really care and want their guests to have the best possible time! You will not be disappointed!

Wonderful family vacation

My wife and I, two adult daughters, and our son in law stayed at Casa Ana for one week over the New Year. We had an incredibly wonderful time. The house is very beautiful and extremely well appointed and equipped. The location is beautiful and we certainly enjoyed the remoteness and tranquility that it provided. We collected the fresh eggs each morning, gathered produce from the garden, helped to milk the cows and made some cheese, and had several horse back rides. The staff at The Hacienda were extremely kind and helpful and made the stay very enjoyable. We found the listing description and photographs to be very accurate. The property owner was so very helpful in email communication prior to our arrival and clearly and accurately answered all our questions. We enjoyed meeting the owners during our stay. We used a local driver to collect us at the airport and then another local driver to drive us around. This worked well for us but others might prefer to have their own vehicle. The home is a 45 minute walk from the nearest small town. We enjoyed this remote location and walk. We have no hesitation in recommending the property to others who are looking for a beautiful home in a beautiful location with an abundance of nature, and peace and quiet. We may return again ourselves.

Paradise Found

Our family had an incredible stay at Casa Ana in June! We stayed for one month and it far exceeded our expectations. The ranch is in a beautiful location, surrounded by mountains and green fields. It is very picturesque! The weather was absolutely perfect while we were there, with highs in the 70‘s (fahrenheit) each day. It is somewhat remote, so for our family, it was a wonderful time away from electronics and our normal crazy schedule. The owners were very attentive to any of our requests and could not have been any more helpful. The house is gorgeous, with wonderful attention to detail in its beauty and functionality. It was very comfortable and we loved the beautiful painting on the walls, the three fireplaces and the nice, big kitchen with lots of light coming in from the outdoors. We loved the ranch and it came to feel like it was ours (without the responsibility of maintaining it). Our boys were outside for all waking hours, with the exception of meals and Spanish lessons. They enjoyed horseback riding lessons many days with the instructor the owners recommended. Our boys most enjoyed playing outside with the many farm animals. There seemed to be at least one of every kind! They would collect the eggs in the morning, ride the donkey, go on hikes, pick vegetables from the garden to eat, and sometimes milk the cows at night. We would buy the milk and pasteurize it to drink. The employees are so helpful, kind, and friendly. We enjoyed interacting with them. They taught our family how to properly hoe the garden, chop firewood, milk cows, build a fire, make humitas and empanadas, and even helped us with our Spanish. They would light the fires in our fireplaces each morning and evening, definitely a service we loved! We were sad to say good-bye to them. We used the driver recommended by the owners and were very happy with him. He was a wonderful guide and very flexible, driving us to various tourist sites, the grocery store and any where we wanted to go. We enjoyed excursions to Otavala, Laguna de Cuicocha, Quito, Cochasqui, Quitsato, Parque Condor, and Cascada de Peguche. This ranch is the perfect place to get away, while still having access to many interesting places nearby and all the amenities we are used to in our own home (and maybe a few more). We made many sweet memories as a family and it was the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors and relax. We highly recommend and hope to return again!

What a magical place! We loved finding San Juan de la Vaga on VRBO and Home away as we have been looking for a place to rent in this area for over a year! This was the perfect match! Upon arrival we were utterly amazed – the pictures are beautiful – but do not capture the beauty of this incredible place. Both homes we saw are exquisite and have all the modern “American” needs. The staffs as well as the owners are wonderful people. You have the complete privacy of any VRBO property but uniquely you also have access to the staff and owners on the level that you desire. This place would be great for families of any size, family reunions, and big groups. It would be perfect for a group of students coming to learn Spanish over their summer break – as it is completely secure yet close enough to town for day trips to immerse in the culture. I believe each house sleeps 8 comfortably. http://www.vrbo.com/424116 and http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p956566 David & Janine - thank you again & again!

Magical for our whole family!

I cannot say how much the hacienda was above our expectations. From the staff help to the houses to the grounds, everything was perfect. Janine and David were so helpful and never tired of making us more comfortable. All 4 of our kids want to live there! The fireplaces were wonderful and warm and the home was luxurious and comfortable. The location was the perfect mix of countryside(hiking and exploring all around) and easy to town. A 4$ cab ride is a phone call away. The horses and instructors were fabulous and we never wanted to leave! We will be returning.

Hacienda San Juan de La Vega has been in my husband David´s family for about 20 years... We love our ranch dearly and in the last year or so we have really put a lot of love and joy into renovating our property. We finished renovating Casa Ana in May 2012 and then started renovating Casa Barbarita in Jan. of 2013... That villa took along time but was finally finished in 2014.

We've loved our rental experience, having many lovely families & couples visit for long month stays or just a quick long weekend / week visits.

I've loved living in Ecuador for the last 8 years... When I lived in Northern VA, I was a pre-school teacher / Director of a wonderful little preschool that I opened with my mother. Clifton Children's Academy. I grew up in the McLean VA area most of my life... however now I find myself completely in love, living in Quito Ecuador. I love Ecuador and definitely recommend a visit! We are trying to create a new kind of Vacation experience on our Ranch... We hope you enjoy it!

Why they chose this property

We are near Otavalo in a small community called San Pablo del Lago (about 10min away). Our hacienda San Juan de La Vega was a passion and a dream for David's father... He loved the land and always wanted to create a sustainable life style on the ranch... We have tried to follow his dream as we continually implement new projects that are permaculture related. We are constantly learning and find that life on the ranch is extraordinary enriching for us as a couple as well as for our visitors...

For us it is important that you and your family share valuable life lasting memories... In a way it is like going back to a more simple life style... Getting back to the basics... Visiting grandmas farm... making home made biscuits and more... You create the memories we provide the possibilities... Enjoy!

What makes this property unique

We fell in love with our ranch because it is truly a unique place... The beauty of the landscape is picturesque... just imagine the sun setting as you are riding your horse along the pastureland at the end of a beautiful green valley. The wind just slightly rustling... Your children playing with the farm animals... milking the cows and making your own butter for home made pancakes! :o)

Since I am a teacher at heart, I love to create memories with our nieces and nephews...Really you can feel free to come up with your own fun ideas as well as use some of mine!

The point is for you to enjoy and reconnect with nature... it is fabulous! We hope you feel the same way about our ranch... I guess you can tell that we really love our ranch and look forward to sharing it with you! We look forward to your visit!
