About this property

The Cottage at Ozark Highlands Farm

Our hand-built stone cottage is rustic, simple, straight-forward, and perfect for those seeking a stress-free short getaway from city living or for longer term lodging (that comes with a significant discount.)

PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate any animals inside the house. Because we are a working farm, there will sometimes be farm activities going on while guests are here; and a few people, including my handyman & my part-time caretaker, as well as my husband and I may come and go discreetly as we take care of the land and the animals. The nearest neighbor is a long stone's throw away, so the peace, quiet, and beauty of this farm will gently roll away the demand and stresses of life.

With 4 beds and 1 bathroom, we can comfortably accommodate 4 people, however, for families or groups that don't mind close quarters, we have two cots, so we can adapt to six people in a pinch. (Keep in mind that this is a former hunting cabin - very comfortable, but not luxurious.) There is good wifi and a collection of family-friendly DVD's, games, and a smart TV.

A spacious kitchen allows you to create custom meals – be warned - it has a lower than normal ceiling (about 7'.) The loft is accessed by a steep, narrow, low-clearance stairway that can be difficult for small children, but there is a "kiddie gate" for use to prevent little ones from climbing unexpectedly. There are two steps up into both the bathroom and kitchen. The bathroom has a shower – no tub.

A most interesting, fun time to visit The Cottage is during our annual spring kidding season when the fields are literally "jumping" with baby goats. Normally kidding occurs during May and June.

Ask about our discount for active clergy & military personnel. We are located just off of I-44 south and east of Carthage – due east of Joplin, with easy access to area attractions (complete directions will be given after booking.

Merre Has The Biggest Heart

I feel blessed to have been able to stay at her cottage for a very important family reunion. We entered the cottage and were greeted by the smell of fresh bread baking (a gift along with farm-fresh eggs from Merre), and she so graciously accommodated requests and answered questions quickly. It was the best place we could have possibly stayed. I highly recommend it!

Perfect getaway

Beautiful little cabin on an active farm with a lot of fun animals to look at as you enjoy a spectacular sunset on the balcony. Merre made the check in as simple as possible and let me know about some of the creek access areas around the farm with handy maps to both. Close enough to multiple towns so picking up supplies was a breeze. I highly recommend this location or any of Merre's other properties in the area!

Cute little cottage

A nice place to stay and unwind . It was big enough for 2 adults and 3 teenagers. Merre was kind enough to set an extra cot up for us. She had fresh made bread awaiting us, upon our arrival. The girls enjoyed using the fire pit to make s’mores. We went to crystal clear creek & and enjoyed the the animals. Merre is a wonderful host. Our 2nd time staying at her properties. We hope to be back next year.

Fun on the farm

It was great. Merre was a great host. The property was just as described. We loved the animals and the chance to feed them plus the little class on taking care of them. Jill the cat was very sweet. We loved hiking the property and the swimming hole. The historic homes drive and the small appliance museum were fun also. Thanks for the great time.

Cute place!

We needed a place to stay while traveling to the area for a funeral. It was nice not being in the middle of a city trapped in a hotel, having a place to be outside and breathe the fresh air, with livestock nearby, brought some peace to our stay. Felt very much at home since we live in the middle of nowhere ourselves, this place was perfect! Merre was quick to communicate and accommodate to our needs, and fresh eggs and bread just made it that much better. Highly recommend staying here!

Wow! What a wonderful cottage!!!

Rent this amazing, sweet cottage! I promise you will be beyond pleased you did. I have stayed in vacation rental homes over the world and Merre’s cottage, property, interactive farm lessons, and personal touches, were hands down the BEST complete experience I’ve ever come across. I own 3 VRBO cottages in Michigan and Colorado. I have a lot of experience when it comes to renting and renting out a home. There were 6 of us on this visit; my husband, four children(ages15-7) and I. We were in town visiting family and we stayed at Merre’s cottage for four days. We truly enjoyed every sweet moment and memory beginning at driving up to the beautiful barn, cottage, and farm animals that greeted us. The location is perfect and very private. When we walked into the cottage, Merre had baked us bread and left us fresh eggs in the fridge. The cottage was warm, friendly and made my heart skip a beat. It felt like I had just been transported back to Switzerland into the European cottages speckled throughout the countryside. It was truly a fantastic moment! Merre managed to entice all the senses with our experience and what an amazing experience it was for us all! My four kiddos loved the endless amount of friendly animals. Their favorites were the cute kittens, sweet goats, and silly Alpacas. Merre was able to give us some lessons on feeding, the jobs of the animals and how to take care of them. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it. The cottage was cozy yet felt spacious. The loft upstairs had plenty of space for the kids, while my husband and I took the comfortable day bed and trundle at night. Merre has thought of everything, including air conditioning units, blackout curtains in the loft, and fans. Everyone slept very well all three nights. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of items and Merre was quick to help out when I had forgotten an item at the store. I’m not sure Merre sleeps, she is a sweet wealth of knowledge, constantly in motion, very laid back and caring, and wonderfully passionate about her farm. She was such a joy to be around! Thank you to Merre for providing us with top-quality comfort and joy. We will be back to see you all!

Great country feel

I am not normally a country guy and was really just looking for a place to sleep while in town for an axe tournament but this place was great and the property owner went above and beyond to help me out when I lost the key. If I am back in the area definitely staying here again

Smelled like warm bread when I walked in the door. Transported me back to farm cottages during WWIII in Europe that I have seen in TV movies. Loved the animals and the relaxing atmosphere.

Adorable, clean and comfortable farm house!

This was such a pleasant experience! Cute, cozy and clean old-fashioned home on a farm, but has all the modern amenities you'd need (e.g. shower, toilet, kitchen, wifi, TV). We woke up and the kids got to meet the goats, cat, llamas, horse and cows. What a treat! Very peaceful surroundings and a very unique experience. I'd actually love to go back.

Lovely Weekend Surrounded By Animals and Nature

This sweet cottage right next to the red barn was perfect for our family of 3. My 6 year old loved climbing the steep stairs to the sleeping loft and sitting on the balcony to watch the horse. There are so many lovely animals and it was very peaceful. It was perfect for social distancing, but there is the option to socialize via the farm visit -goat milking, feeding chickens, holding kittens, etc-- for those who are interested. Lovely place and easy to find. We'd definitely be back to the sweet cottage which reminded me of my great-grandmother's.

Life in the farm

Really enjoyed the area and the cottage. Loved seeing the animals right outside. Fresh bread was waiting for us and smelled great when we entered. There is no TV (which we knew about ahead of time, just making sure you know) and never did find the dvd player and collection of dvds that was mentioned in the listing. Overall though, we had a great weekend stay. Thanks Merre!
