About this property

Retreat Center at Ozark Highlands Farm

Stirling Cottage, a spacious 5-bedroom, 2 1/2 bathroom whimsically remodeled farmhouse sleeping up to 16 is situated on 60 beautiful, serene acres, about 8 miles south of Carthage (the website incorrectly says Sarcoxie,) providing the opportunity to explore nature, watch/play in the laughing creek, or sit on the deck & enjoy the sights & sounds of the country and slow down from the many demands of life.

PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate animals indoors because so many of my guests have allergies. The base price is for six guests. Extra guests (up to sixteen) are $20/person/night.

Also on the property is the original (remodeled) Milk House which can sleep up to six people (4 on beds plus 2 airbeds or cots) and is booked separately, and Thirties, the apartment below Stirling, which sleeps four - also booked separately.

The farm is a perfect location for small family reunions, personal or small group retreats and celebrations of all kinds, accommodating up to 26 people.

"Twigs" is the large master bedroom, with king-size bed, chaise lounge, shabby chic decor, and views of our east fields.

"Vintage" offers one king bed and one double antique bed. Four large windows showcasing stunning sunsets, and the other antique furniture create a "vintage ambiance." (There is also a trundle bed under the double bed.)

The "Sunroom" is the smallest bedroom on the main floor, but lets in the grandest light w/two walls of windows. A comfortable daybed with trundle underneath allows two people to enjoy this sunny room.

"Maps" and "Blooms" are two dormitory -style bedrooms on the second floor with half-bath. "Maps," is decorated with artifacts and antiques and has three twin beds (one is X-long) ; while "Blooms" is decorated with bright colors, floral fabrics, and wicker. It has four twin beds.

PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate any animals inside the house. Because we are a working farm, there will sometimes be farm activities going on while guests are here; and a few people including my handyman, mowing crew, myself & members of my family may come and go discreetly as we take care of the land and the animals. My son makes a security run through the property, checking the creek & closing the chicken coop door most nights.

The nearest neighbor is a long stone's throw away, so the peace, quiet, and beauty of this farm will gently roll away the demand and stresses of life.
Add to that, beautiful St. Gertrudis cattle, the softly clucking hens, some affectionate, but strictly outdoor cats - and you have the idyllic environment of Stirling Cottage.

I love to host family reunions, getaway and craft retreats, birthday parties, anniversaries, and events of all kinds! Please contact me for specific pricing.
(Ask about my discount for active clergy and active military personnel.)

Please note: Because of the popularity of Stirling, I have a strict cancellation policy:
---full refund for cancellations made within 48 hours of booking, or if the check-in date is at least 21 days away
---50% refund for cancellations made at least 7 days before
check-in.
---no refunds for cancellations made within 7 days of check-in." However, in some circumstances, I have been able to make exceptions when the space has time to be rented to others so it never hurts to ask.

Here are three additional amenities that may interest your group:
FARM TOUR
At the Cottage farm, (weather/season permitting,) we offer a Farm Tour which includes interacting with and hand-feeding Hannah & Hezzy, our long-hair Scottish Highland heifer & bull; Tom and Harry, our two Alpacas; Rebecca, our LaMancha milk goat (and the other goats;) Libby, Valiant, & Esther, our Anatolian/Pyrenees goat guardians; and, Jill, the affectionate barn cat.
Across the road at the Stirling farm are beautiful St. Gertrudis cattle, my assortment of chickens, and more sweet, affectionate cats. In addition to interacting and hand-feeding the animals (except Libby,) the tour includes milking lessons (when Rebecca is still producing,) and egg collection - $30 for 1-10 people - $40 for 11-20.

MASSAGE:
I am acquainted with an experienced massage therapist, who brings her table and supplies to the property. One recent guest who has experienced professional massage therapy in many of her world-wide travels, said, "Elise gave me the best massage I have ever had!" And another said, - “ Elise gave Rich the best massage he has had since we left Arizona 20 years ago!” (Advanced notice necessary-payment made directly to Elise.)

CATERING:
There are also two caterers within five miles of the farm:
Angie Smith – catering – smoked meats, etc.
Mende Staggs – cakes and full meal catering.
Communication and payment made directly to them.

OK Corral Wedding

The stress of driving almost 1700 miles in 2 days was at best, miserable. The fresh baked, warm bread and fresh eggs made for an exceptional welcome. This home is well stocked with condiments, supplies and towels, lots of them! The only thing absent was a broom so cleaning up after kids was tough! The weather was brutally hot and humid! Too hot for us adults (6) to force the kids outside to play during the day but there was plenty to keep them occupied in the spacious living room! The kids, 9 of them ages 2 to 13 enjoyed the use of the toys, books, games, TV and wifi (a/k/a netflex, you tube and Prime) probably more than the open-air spaces, which were spacious and lovely. The creek was a huge hit, not so much for us adults, but it could have been! The possibilities are endless. The highlights for the kids were the chickens, the cats - two Jacks (now lovingly named Tabby Jack and Tiger Jack) and Sweet Jill. Ester the not so small "puppy" is friendly and loves to be scratched - advance notice - she likes to snatch and run off with items left unattended by the littles! :0) The rooms are tastefully decorated and cozy. The property host, Mere, was gracious and accommodating; promptly responding to every ?/concern we had (they were few and far between) both pre visit and during our stay; we needed an extra day for early arrival and she made it happen! The Milk House is adorable! If not for the AC malfunction on days 4 & 5 of our stay, everything would have been PERFECT!

Fantastic!

We loved staying in this farmhouse! It was big enough for all of us with so many bedrooms and a large living area. Plus the kids enjoyed the chickens, cows and cats and all the room to play outside. It was close to Joplin and the Precious Moments Chapel which was the reason for our trip. Also, the host had fresh bread waiting for us which was delicious! They made you feel at home and was very fast to respond when needed. We would definitely stay there again!

A relaxing getaway

The house was spacious and quirky. There were great outdoor spaces for the kids to run around and entertain themselves. For an extra $30 the host gave us a tour of the farm and let the kids interact with several animals.

Sisters in Christ 2023 Retreat

The property is awesome. The owners greater us and checked in to make sure we had what we needed. We had homemade bread and fresh eggs at checked in and offers to assist with carrying things out as we left. Many of us have it on our list of possible places for personal needs as well as a revisit for 2014. Away from the congestion of the city but close to town and many wonderful day trips and eating experiences. 5 stars are not enough for what this has to offer.

Women’s Bowling Team from Union, MO

We had 8 women in our group and their was not one complaint all weekend. Mere was a wonderful host. She met us at the house and took us on a tour which really made all of us feel very comfortable. The homemade bread Mere made was delicious and she also gave us a dozen eggs from the chickens that roamed the property. When Joplin hosts the tournament again, we will definitely be renting this house again. Thank you Mere for making our weekend extra special.

Homey, warm and a great place for people to gather! Farm animals and surroundings added to the experience. Host communicated well and worked with us as our plans evolved. Cute little farm house

This was a cute farm house, very peaceful and relaxing. It was nice to walk into the house and smell fresh cooked bread. Also nice to have fresh eggs. The only things that did not make this a five star is the dryer broke which was inconvenient and the furniture was uncomfortable .

Well-accommodated and surrounded in vintage treasures

The property had all we needed, and we had a great time with family. I especially appreciated: the fresh well water; the books, games, and DVDs (we used all of those categories); the stocked tea and coffee; the appreciation for and use of vintage things (such as several original fixtures); plenty of linens, toilet paper, trash bags, etc.; the fire pit + corn hole game; local information in the foyer; seeing the farm animals across the street; the overall 'make yourself at home' vibe of the property. It is evident Merre has perfected the art! The notes and explanations of things around the house really make you feel accommodated.
