Dockside Resort is very unique! So cool to hang out at the marina!
Year round fun and comfort. Those mega windows are great to see waves and deer!
Pull up with cars, trucks, trailers, or on snowmobiles. Lots or room for gear.
The 10x10 porch is great. Winter guests love to stash helmets, suits, and skis.
The hous overlooks the lake, and the nearly completed observation tower.

The three spacious, private bedrooms have a queen, a queen, and twin beds and full closet for your luggage. The biggest bedroom also includes a queen sized futon, couch style, suitable for a single person. The large bathroom features a walk-in shower that measures 40x60" for plenty of elbow room. The kitchen shines with stainless appliances and modern comforts. Plus we provide lots of extras to add to the fun of hanging out, such as a coffee pot (we provide the coffee), a waffle maker, a crockpot, and a blender - for berry smoothies or adult beverages. There is grilling available for outdoor meals. We provide either paper plates or classy dishes, depending on how you want to dine for each meal.
A large attached porch is perfect for snowmobilers to unpack their gear and for bicyclers to safely store their bikes. Snowmobile trail #133 runs into our driveway. If 4-wheeling in your thing, there is plenty of room to keep trailers and gear on site. Mount Bohemia is just down the road.
We are situated at the official trail head for the 4 wheel trails and for the snowmobile trails. The grounds at Dockside include fire pits, large and small. Fishing, swimming, and sun-bathing are encouraged.
On the grounds, we have a stage for hosting musical acts. Plus we have a cabana that is wired with a refrigerator and roasting ovens for serving food and drinks to larger groups. Let us know if you plan to have an event of your own while you are with us. Weddings, reunions, and picnics. If you have any questions about what is included please feel free to send an email.

Keeeenaq Experience
The property was interesting. Small nicely laid out campground. Cottage was large, clean, and comfortable. The Dockside Resort was close to many waterfall, small towns to explore, and beaches of Lake Superior. Everyone enjoyed the stay. Thank you Sherri and Bob for letting us enjoy your cottage

Visiting the UP with Framily
Three adults and two kids did a 12 day road trip to and through the UP. We stayed in house#1 on Sherry, Fred, and Bob’s property. They are in the process of renovating their six houses. We had a three bedroom one bath, stocked kitchen, spacious living area, a fire rind, picnic table on the porch, lake view, bicycle, fishing rods, access to kayaks AND a lake view. We cannot wait to come stay here again! Thank you for the hospitality!

Nice U.P. Rental!
Nice rental in the small town of Gay, MI. Well-stocked kitchen ready with extra meal items in case we forgot to bring something. Plenty of room for two couples and a few extras that joined us for dinner. Bob and Sherri were wonderful hosts and answered all our inquiries quickly. Nice little campsite just adjacent to rental units. Would rent again from this host.

Came back for a second visit!!
We enjoyed this property so much the first time we decided to come back for a second trip!! The owners are incredible. Because there was so much snow, the front door wouldn’t close properly and the owner came within ten minutes to fix it!! They responded in a timely manner, left snacks for us and everything was super clean!! They even let our doggie come stay and he loves it there too! Hopefully we can do it again next year as well :)

Clean and Out of the Way
We knew this about Gay ahead of time, but for anyone unfamiliar it may be a surprise just how far you have to drive for groceries, shopping, essentials, etc. However, there was a lot of food, snacks, essentials in the place from previous vacationers that could probably keep you fed, and the owners keep it well stocked with necessities too. I feel the word “resort” is used loosely in the title of the property and anyone expecting “resort”-like accommodations and amenities will be severely let down. It’s more of a cottage (literally a relocated dilapidated army house they moved here and fixed up many years ago), located just off a main road (although not too much traffic due to the rural location), quite a distance from the “beach” (just a small sandy area, barely enough room and a bit awkward to lay out on; and definitely no good swimming area). I mention the details to merely fully inform and give someone a better picture of what to expect, and not to knock the hard work the owners have done and are still doing to grow and improve the property. Again, to me it’s most important a place be clean and it was. Also, there is no cell phone signal and the WiFi calling was not reliable. When we needed to communicate with the outside world, texting (and that would take up to 10 minutes to go through or not all sometimes) or email were our only options. Great place for anyone not interested in actually relaxing/staying on the property, but rather for those heading out every day snowmobiling, hiking, touring, etc.

Unexpected Delight
Driving up to the property makes you question if you're in the right spot...at least if you drive through the campground part with all of the campers. But once we got to the property itself and went inside, we were so surprised at how well things were taken care of and how easy the check-in and check-out processes were. Not to mention, the property owners are very helpful and easygoing. They gave us plenty of outdoor toys to play around with to keep the kids entertained and they also have toys like a barbecue, fure pit, and a couple watercraft for the adults. Not to mention, a great view of the lake! Would definitely stay here again!

Okay
The cabin is nice, but farther from the water than you expect, not very private as well, tent campers around you. In our opinion if you are looking for private quiet area near the water this is not for you. But if you are looking for busy area but clean cabin within walking distance to the water this is for you. Please also remember to take food, stuff to grill out or for breakfast alot places not open, or weird hours so be prepared and also far a way.

Quiet Get-Away
We truly enjoyed our time away from the city. The lake house was very clean and well stocked with snacks, spices, coffee/tea and condiments. We had a wonderful time making S’mores at our private fire pit watching the sunsets. The fishing was fun at both the lake and the river, which were both easy to access. The hosts were amazing!

AMAZING LOCATION AND VIEWS!!
This was the perfect stay for my husband, myself and our dog. The property has a gorgeous lake-front view with deer constantly running around. Only 27 minutes from Mt. Bohemia! The owners were accommodating, easy to get in touch with and the house was nice and clean! Very smooth process and we plan to come back in the future!! Thanks again!

Great place!
We really enjoyed our stay! The cabin was so very comfortable for our family of four. The kitchen was well stocked for all our cooking. Sherry had left fruit and treats for us. The view from the living room/kitchen windows was wonderful. The grounds are fascinating - at first look seemed a little ramshackle, with investigation it was so very interesting. Bob is such a fascinating man. We came to the place because we were unable to get together with friends and family for the holiday so we looked for an alternative. This was not the same as having a family Christmas but it was almost as good. I highly recommend.

Fall Getaway
The cabin was fine and just what we needed with an infant. The view from the huge picture windows was spectacular. My son-in-law is a professor at MI Tech and was easily able to join us for part of the time. The property seems to be a work in progress with projects starting everywhere which is a distraction from the peaceful atmosphere. The refrigerator was full of opened bottles of condiments etc., and with the pandemic I would have preferred a clean frig. We enjoyed our stay and time with new grandchild. The fall colors and weather were perfect!

Beautiful House and Property
The house is beautiful—even more so than it looks in the photos. The main living space is very comfortable and the huge windows gave a great view of the lake during the day as well as of a lightning storm that rolled through one night. The bathroom in particular is very nice. The kitchen was just about fully stocked—more food than we could even consider. The property is large and the lakefront is gorgeous. Communicating with Sherry has been a pleasure. Hope to come back soon!

Cute Cabin With Everything You Need
The cabin was great. It was clean and had all the amenities for a nice stay. The owners were friendly and had prompt responses to all of our questions. The cabin has amazing windows with an incredible view of the lake. The one downside is that there is a lot going on in the surrounding property... many projects that are in progress, some that partially obstruct the lake view. Also, the marina is quite small, there is no place to swim/play, but there are some beautiful sandy beaches that are an easy drive away.

About the host

Hosted by Sherry Kauppi

Host profile image
We are the third generation to live and work on the property outside of Gay. Our grandfather began here as a commercial fishing operation. Now it is a recreation area that caters to those who enjoy nature. One side has a small campsite for up to 7 hook-ups. The other side has the rustic-luxe vacation homes. By January 2023 we should have four houses completely renovated. We have worked, played, picked berries, swam, and rested on these docks and this land since our earliest memories. The boys in the family went fishing for lake trout and whitefish, on Lake Superior with our Dad. The girls climbed on net reels and picked the berries. Bob, the host, lives on the site at this time and Sherry, the sister who is also a co-host, has a place in Hancock. The Kauppi family has been in the hospitality business for 3 generations as well. They owned and operated the Pilot House Resort, and the Isle Royale Ferry Service and later they built and ran the King Copper Motel, all in Copper Harbor. When he was a boy, our Dad, Sully, used to live in Gay in the winter and in Copper Harbor in the summer. He had cross country skied from Gay to Copper Harbor at times when there was no grooming on a trail. He told us funny stories of how they brought their cow from Gay to Copper Harbor and back. So our roots on this peninsula run deep and we are happy to share our love for the place with each of you.

Why they chose this property

The uniqueness of the land at Dockside is headlined by the view. Look over Lake Superior and see the Huron Mountains on the other side of the Keweenaw Bay. The spot is somewhat protected from the west winds, so it is often extra friendly for boating and water sports. The shoreline is sandstone with sections of clean white sand. Plus toward the town of Gay, there are sections of black sand left over from the former mill and mining activities in the area. On the other hand, when the wind blows in a storm from the east, we can enjoy watching some fabulous waves crashing as the water pounds on the breakwalls. Our facebook page highlights some pictures from those times. Nature creates dramatic photo opps for us in all seasons and in all weather.

What makes this property unique

Our houses also have a great story. In their former life, they provided housing for the Air Force personnel and their families at an air base near Gratiot Lake. The houses were moved to the site in Gay and are being renovated with love and care. They are great for couples and families who want to enjoy nature's rugged beauty. Lake Superior is in all her glory. If you also want modern comforts and all the amenities of a well maintained kitchen, for meal prep options, this is your place. We envision that the first house will be a favorite with our brides or the parents of the bride. We also hope that baby boomers will find it is the best of all worlds, a bit of luxury on the lake. Also we have had family reunion folks enjoy the house as couples from around the country came together to revisit their family stories.
