About the host
Your host

I first came here when I was 5 years old. I married my wife in the shadow of 16,239' Mount Sanford a few miles out back, and several years ago, we bought the historic property. We have been renovating one of the last remaining Alaskan hunting lodges and have added multiple guest cabins and yurts, as well as a solar array and wind turbine for sustainable power. We have chosen to make this special place our home and raise a family because of its beauty, tranquility, and wildness.
Why they chose this property
This is the last great place on the road system in Alaska. We live here year-round, and love the variety each season brings. From world class lake trout and incredible Arctic grayling, to the largest golden eagle flyway in the world, this place has been unspoiled by development or industrial tourism. Our summers offer spectacular geology (hike an extinct volcano into redrock country), lake swimming and canoeing, life-list birding, berry picking, and wildflowers. Autumn here is rich with abundant golden willows, crimson fireweed, and russet birch leaves across the immense rolling taiga hills. Winter and spring offer limitless backcountry exploration, ice fishing, northern lights, caribou herds, and fat-tire biking. This is truly an outdoor lover's playground!
What makes this property unique
Located in Wrangell St. Elias National Park, this is the perfect base for your adventures in the wilderness, where you can still have modern amenities like heat, power, running water, and wifi (if you choose) at our off-grid outfit. There is only wild, raw parkland for miles around - we are in the undeveloped part of the park where you won't hear cars rushing by or small planes buzzing overhead. You are just steps away from mountain lakes with nesting trumpeter swans and belted kingfishers, where you may paddle a canoe or relax on the bank. Or you may come in winter, under the biggest starry sky and most brilliant northern lights.
