Great House
We came with our young adult children and had a great stay. The property was super clean and well taken care of. Beds were very comfy and cozy. It’s important to note that there are no window coverings so the morning light really shines right in to the loft space. It’s a very nice house with a great deck and views. They filled the hummingbird feeders and regular bird feeder and we all really enjoyed watching all the birds. The deck does have a like a rodent repellent beeper (I think that’s what it was) that emits a high pitch beep frequently. It didn’t bother my husband and I ( older ears) but it drove our kids nuts. We bought our dog and that worked out nicely. Dogs are allowed on the main floor only and that worked out just fine. All in all it was a great stay and we would definitely book this property again!

Wonderful week
Grinning Bear Lodge was wonderful! My favorite thing about it is the setting. It is nestled in the evergreen trees with abundant birds and wildlife. A Stellar's Jay visited the deck every morning and occasionally in the afternoon. Many nuthatches visited the feeder on the deck. And the hummingbirds were as thick as flies. They would regularly hover a few feet from my face, as if they were saying hi. We even had a grey jay visit the deck once. It's a great place if you are a bird nerd, but we also had fun playing pool and hanging out by the fire pit. The location is also ideal if you want to hike the many trails around Twin Lakes and Leadville.

This is a beautiful property with gorgeous views. Inside was lovely and clean. The owner thought of everything we might need. The outside has a great deck with incredible views of the mountains. Peaceful and quiet. The pool table and Foosball table were an added bonus of fun for our family and friends. I would definitely stay here again.

Gorgeous cabin with breathtaking views and privacy
We absolutely LOVED the Grinning Bear Lodge! It was the perfect pet-friendly cabin for me and my wife, accompanied by our Aussiedoodle pup. From the beginning, Nancy was very punctual to our initial inquiries regarding the rental and check-in was flawless and the directions which were provided by her were perfect. The cabin was absolutely beautiful and we found it to be meticulously clean and exceptionally maintained. The spacious kitchen was well stocked including ample seasonings and condiments as well as a nearly fully stocked refrigerator. The high vaulted ceilings with huge windows afforded beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and allowed ample sunlight to enter the spacious cabin. The lodge was beautifully decorated with a classic “bear motif”- hence the name Grinning Bear Lodge. All of the linens were crisp, clean and extremely comfortable and the closets were stocked with additional comfy bed coverings for those cool nights. We loved the fact that all of the windows included screens and could easily be opened, in order to allow the cool clean mountain air enter the cabin. The upstairs loft bedroom included a private balcony which was absolutely perfect for nighttime stargazing. The lodge was also perfect for our pet and even included food and water bowls in the laundry room which also included some pet toys. The washer and dryer were full sized, performed flawlessly and even included a generous supply of laundry detergent and dryer sheets. There is a large wrap around deck on the main level , which was perfect for morning coffee and afforded gorgeous mountain views in every direction. We enjoyed grilling on the clean and well maintained BBQ grill which is also conveniently situated on the deck, hence easily accessible. During our stay we utilized the awesome adjacent fire-pit where there is an abundant supply of wood on the wood rack as well as additional wood located in the garage. During our stay we had absolutely no issues with the property and we are already hoping to return next year. It was absolutely perfect and exceeded our expectations! Thank you Nancy for sharing your beautiful cabin with us- Sincerely, Allen, Anjelica and Douglas Fir

Great Mountain Cabin Stay
Overall, we had a great stay at The Grinning Bear Lodge in Twin Lakes. The place itself is excellent, as advertised in the pictures, and well run by Nancy, who was very responsive during our stay. Be sure to follow Nancy's directions to get there, GPS may try to take you up to the place via a much sketchier route. Check-in was easy and the house was clean and as expected on arrival. The house is well stocked with everything you need for your stay, including a wide range of kitchen cookware/supplies, shampoo/soap, and towels. All was first rate. The furnishings including the beds and sheets were all quality and comfortable and house is well cared for by the owner. We only had one or two minor items we thought could be addressed during our stay and Nancy said she'd get right on them - though given the house location it can be hard to get service folks out there quickly. Our group was 4 adults and 2 young kids and the house was great for us. Awesome views form the deck and a great outdoor fire pit. Lots of great hiking and outdoor activities close by, including trailheads for La Plata Peak and Mount Elbert.100% would recommend and stay again.

More Beautiful than the pictures!
we were looking for deep snow for my husky to play in and a place that was isolated. It was perfect, beautiful, and first class. The pictures don't do the surrounding area justice - it was on a mountain - in a neighborhood but houses were 75 to 100 yards away behind trees so never really saw anyone else. It was 30-45m from the nearest town. The only thing was that you need a hotspot on your phone if you want internet access for laptops or streaming. But it was good to put the electronics down and enjoy friends and the snow. I did notice that it was close to snowmobile, skiing is 45m away. Copper Mountain about an hour and Vail about an hour and a half. But the lake looked great for summer and hiking and exploring would be amazing during the spring and summer months. there are only 2 bedrooms. There are bunk beds on the lowest floor and bunk beds near the master bedroom. All the beds and couches were very comfortable. It was a amazing week - the owner was very helpful, nice and responsive. The property was more beautiful than you can imagine.

Wonderful
It was a really pleasant stay. Close to Twin Lakes and a wonderfully secluded feel. Don't follow the google maps directions...there is an easier way to get to the cabin. The path to the cabin is a dirt road, so a good car for snowy conditions is important. And the driveway is steep.

Great Leadville 100 home base!
Our family rented Grinning Bear for 2 weeks while my husband participated in the Leadville 100 races. We found it to be a great location for getting to/from Leadville often, spectating, and going to Buena Vista with the kids to escape the race crowds. The home was clean, comfortable, and stocked with everything we could have possibly needed. We loved spending time on the porch taking in the views/watching the birds and the kids had a great time exploring around the cabin. A couple of things to take note of that were a little tricky for our setup were the single shower in the loft (hard with having pacers stay at the house with us and needing access to the shower) and no wi-fi connection (we had good signal on our phones through AT&T and used them as hotspots but my husband was working remotely and had a difficult time with his video calls. He was able to get a different hotspot that worked better, though). We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and would choose Grinning Bear again in a heartbeat! Thanks!

No peeking….
It’s a great house, and we really enjoyed the private location. However, there are no window coverings at all in the bathrooms and bedrooms, and I hated that. It was just my husband and I, because our friends had to cancel, but I kept thinking it would have been really awkward had they been able to vacation with us. You could not step out of the shower or bath tub without being in front of a window. Some simple window shades should be installed. Other than that it’s a great house with great views…. Depending on who’s getting out of the bath…. 😊

About the host

Host profile image
I am a Colorado native living in Littleton, but I have traveled out of the country on a number of occasions, visiting places such as England, Spain, the Caribbean, Mexico, Peru and Canada. I grew up in Conifer, Colorado, which is about an hour's drive from Denver. We had horses, dogs and cats growing up and and endless space to ride horses, hike and snowmobile, so needless to say I love the outdoors.

Why they chose this property

This cabin was my dream for years, and was finally completed in 2009. It is my second home and I love giving others the opportunity to enjoy it as much as I do myself. Picturesque and secluded, at the base of Mount Elbert, the property looks over the Mosquito Range. The panoramic views are amazing, and the proximity to not only Twin Lakes, but jeep trails, beaver ponds, hiking trails, and even the town of Aspen give you a number of activities to choose from. I truly think you will be amazed at the beauty and tranquility of the area - I have such a hard time leaving every time I come up!

What makes this property unique

I love log homes, and this open floor plan with the high ceilings, beetle kill hardwood on the walls and floors, the slate flooring in the bathrooms, the shower and under the wood-burning stove, along with the soft carpet in the large 800 sq. ft. loft. The half log staircase leading to the loft just adds to the beauty of the place! There is virtually no room in the place that doesn't offer a spectacular view. Enjoy a 'cabin' atmosphere, yet be in luxury.
