The Neighborhood
Apartment is located in center of Belgrade, a 5 -minute walk away from the main square, Knez Mihailova pedestrian zone, and Bohemian Skadarlija Street. All main attractions are at walking distance.
The neighborhood itself is very interesting, either if you are keen on sightseeing and history or on partying and nightlife.
First, things for the basic survival kit: there is a grocery store just outside the building and works from 8am to 11pm. However, if you need something during the night, just across the street there is a corner shop called Felix where you can buy drinks, cigars, cigarettes and snacks
.
Just across the building is one of the most well-known and respected Serbian theatres Atelje 212 which has plays regularly staring top actors and performers from Serbia and the region. Upon exiting the building if you head left, towards the tall Politika building, you will pass by the Shecher club (Club Secer in Serbian) which was one of the first underground rock places in Belgrade in the late 60s. Just at the square of the building of Radio Belgrade (Makedonska street) you may find several restaurants offering good food and atmosphere. However, if you are interested in the real bohemian life, go to Skadarlija (10 minute walk from the apartment) where there are lot of taverns with good national and international cuisine and bands playing classical local tunes.
In less than 10 minute walking distance lies Trg Republike (Sqare of the Republic), the very centre of the city and the most common and beloved place for meeting for people from Belgrade. From there you are less than a minute away from Knez Mihailova street (central pedestrian street) which leads to Kalemegdan fortress which offers spectacular views of the Sava and Danube rivers, and a nice overlook of the city, especially parts like Novi Beograd and Zemun.
On the other hand, if you decide to go right after exiting the building, if you follow the road straight, within 5 minutes you will be at one of the most well-known local markets called Palilulska pijaca, the famous church of St. Marco (Crkva Sv. Marka) which holds the coffin of the only Serbian emperor Tzar Dushan (Car Duan in Serbian). Behind the church of St. Marco there is small Russian church with very colourfully designed and painted.
A five minute walk from the apartment and you will find yourself in front of the Serbian National Parliament (Narodna Skuptina) which is considered as one of the most beautiful and most representative symbols of Belgrade.
If you are in for partying, the apartment is ideally located firstly, in Palmoticeva and Hilandarska street (both less than two minutes away from the apartment) there are a lot of cafes and clubs like the Dali with its strange and a but mysterious insight or the Mali princ (Little Prince) café well known for its deserts and various sorts of coffees. These are good places to start your evening, and then go to some of the clubs around, depending on your interests. All are relatively close by foot, and even a taxi drive is not that expensive.
Getting Around
If you want to get around by other means instead of your feet its easy! Just a 5 minute walk down the Vlajkoviceva street will get you to the buss-stop at Boulevard of Despot Stefan (Bulevar Despota Stefana in Serbian) where almost all central lines going to almost every part of Belgrade pass. The train station is 20 minutes away from the apartment by foot. There is also the trolley system which you can use in front of the Politika building (3 minute walk from the apartment) which can take you within 10 minutes to Kneza Milosha street where the Government buildings and some foreign embassies are, or to the posh rich neighborhoods of Senjak and Dedinje (where the residence of the Cronw Prince is, and also the Museum of Marshal Tito).
The apartment is ideally located if you want to use a car/taxi as well, since going to all major attractions nearby will take you from two to 10 minutes (for the furthers ones, like the Usce shopping mall in Novi Beograd) for around 6-7 euros during daytime.
