Not what we expected

The area: The title of the listing said "San Pedro, La Laguna." After we were already in Guatemala, and were trying to figure out where we were headed next, we noticed that the address said Santa Cruz. However, after some trouble, we realized that the house was in Tzunana. Right off the bat, this felt mis-leading. The owner said that the description said Tzunana, but not knowing the area, we relied heavily on the title of the property that very specifically stated it was in San Pedro! The property itself looked nice. However, it is in the middle of some of the poorest areas around. There was garbage everywhere! We went down to the private dock and saw 3 men on the dock. One of the men was rushing away, and gushing with blood! The other men remained on the dock drinking. At this point, we were too anxious to stick around. We had 2 young children and felt very unsafe. The cabin: Pros: big and well furnished with 2 double beds and a bunk bed. Cons: -The internet was awful. The owner (who was not on site) said it must be because of the wind. There was no wind.... The only place we could get some connectivity was siting outside, right by the modem. -There we dead spiders smashed on the walls and in many dead bugs in corners. -The hot water needed to run for over 5 mins before it got hot. -The cabin was SO cold at night, and there were no extra blankets. Despite plenty of beds for the 4 of us, we had to sleep together to stay warm. -The care-taker/cook of the house said there were no restaurants and that she would cook for us. She gave us a menu and there were 5-6 dinner selections offered. The cost was 3x what we were paying at any of the other locations on the lake! We are vegetarians and there was only 1 option available! We had planned to stay for 3 days, but with the cost of the food, the limited selection of vegetation options, the unsafe individuals that were on the dock, and the terrible internet and lack of blankets, it made this a very unpleasant piece of our trip. We contacted the owner, who was very nice and attempted to assist us, but was unwilling to refund the following nights-despite us explaining all the problems and concerns. He claimed that he had to turn down other renters, but I went on to see that there was plenty of open days immediately after we left. Despite the fact that we were told we would loose our money for the next 2 nights, we packed our stuff and left. Very disapointing!
Stayed 3 nights in Mar 2019
