***The cabin is the perfect base-camp for a family mountain vacation or the ideal place for a romantic couple's getaway. It is also centrally and conveniently located on the Leadville MTB bike course and also, near the Leadville Trail 100 route!

***The cabin offers UNLIMITED recreation and relaxation in the great outdoors as it is surrounded by 5 Wilderness areas and over a dozen of Colorado's 14'ers.

***We now offer our guests the convenience of Starlink WiFi, so if you need to be plugged in, we provide the connection that you need! The cabin also has a television with a DVD player for those who wish to have a special movie night.

LOCATION:

***Centrally located in the upper Arkansas Valley, the cabin is convenient to some of Colorado's favorite mountain towns!

***Leadville, 20 minutes north; Buena Vista, 25 minutes south; Aspen, west, a 1 hour drive over scenic Independence Pass, (when open late May through mid-October); Vail, 1 hour north, Summit County/Breckenridge 1 hour east.

DESCRIPTION:

***The cabin is ideally suited for times of rest, and equally well suited for adventure and endless recreation.

***We stock a variety of reading materials and a large selection of board games.

***Kids have a safe area all around the cabin to let their imaginations soar outdoors. The front covered porch provides inviting seating to enjoy the expansive views of Mt. Massive, Mt. Elbert, Homestake Ridge and Galena Peak to the North, with Mt. Sherman and the Mosquito Range to the east. We offer our guests two additional outdoor seating areas to enjoy the mountain views right from the cabin.

HIKING:

***Hiking is right out the door with spectacular vistas only a short walk to the "Point" where there is a 2 person swing to enjoy a front row seat of 360 degree views of the entire Upper Arkansas mountains. In one direction is Mt Oxford, Twin Peaks, Rinker Mtn, Mt Elbert, Mt Massive and Galena Peak and to the east is the full expanse of the Mosquito Range!

***Hiking trails are too numerous to mention here but are within close proximity to the cabin. Simply Google "hiking trails in Lake County, CO" ,"hiking trails in Twin Lakes, CO", "hiking trails in Chaffee County, CO" or "hiking trails on Independence Pass, CO", and you will find an abundance of trails to explore in the region. There are numerous professional fishing guides in the region to help you plan your trip.

THINGS TO DO:

***Twin Lakes Village is a 10 minute drive from the cabin, offering boat rentals, guided boat tours, water recreation, sandy beaches and water play along its two lakes.

***In addition, there are some quaint stores in the Village, including Tenderfoot Farms grocer with local meats, gourmet foods and gifts, The General Store which is very National Park-ish with a wonderful collection of road trip items, such as children's games, books and souvenirs, a fantastic collection of regional reading materials both historical and informational for hikes, etc, Shooting Star Gallery with local artisans, The Roadhouse Inn coffee shop with amazing hot and cold drinks and soft serve ice cream, The Twin Lakes Inn for breakfast with quaint ambience and beautiful views of Twin Peaks, and also several food trucks which serve a variety of fast, comfort foods!

***The charming and lively town of Buena Vista, 35 minutes to the south, offers many unique boutique shops, fine eateries, and hard and soft ice cream shops. It is also home to a very dynamic music scene at several local restaurants with live music happening several nights of the week.

***Include a trip a little further south to Mt. Princeton Hot Springs and rejuvenate in one of their hot spring pools or let the kids ride down their newly updated water slide features and larger play pools! The inspiring Chalk Cliffs are observed from all of these water features!

***Please come by and introduce yourselves to us at our store on Main St, BV, Little Elk Trading Company! We would love to meet you! You may find a souvenir at our store, which has locally crafted art in woods and watercolors, etc, each made by one of the members of our family art collective!

***Or head north from the cabin and explore the historic mining town of Leadville with its distinctive shopping district along Harrison Street and the National Mining Museum. Summer offers Boom Days with Burro Races, the Leadville 100 Race series, a 100 mile mountain bike race and a 100 mile foot race held in August each year!

Perfection

We were looking for a cabin to unplug, and be a little away from towns. The pictures do not do this cabin justice. Every part of the cabin was complete attention to detail, to make you feel that you were almost in another time..but brand new. We will be booking again no doubt. This was exactly what we were hoping it would be.

Box Creek Cabin is the Real Deal

In a world of fast paced, mass production and ubiquitous housing with few actual skilled craftsman and builders this cabin is the opposite. Thoughtfully, uniquely, and skillfully crafted in every detail. Our stay was exactly what our family needed. Every need was met and more in how the hosts have equipped the cabin. It feels like entering a different world/time every time we entered the driveway. So thankful we chose to stay.

About the host

Hosted by Annie and Jon Frykholm

Host profile image
We are Jon and Annie Frykholm and have been creating handcrafted, household furnishings and accessories for over thirty years. Several years ago we embarked on a new dream; to build a cabin that felt like it had stepped out of the Rocky Mountain past.
A great deal of thought and care was taken to create the vintage feel of Box Creek Cabin, which, we believe, gives a strong nod back to a charmed, bygone era. The cabin's post and beam infrastructure, wood paneling and pine flooring is entirely hand crafted utilizing local beetle-kill, lodgepole pine and spruce. These raw materials were hand collected and milled by Jon on his sawmill and processed in such a way as to take advantage of unique characteristics in the wood. In addition, Jon custom designed and constructed all of the windows to mimic those found in historic cabins.

It was equally important for us to construct the cabin with a small environmental footprint, preserving as many trees and native ground cover surrounding the cabin as was possible. In keeping with this, it was also a priority for us to maintain the environmental integrity throughout the cabin’s construction, using water based/plant based stains and linseed oil for the preservation of all wood surfaces, where feasible, (on all wood surfaces, except the kitchen and bathroom counters). So, this explains the nuts and bolts side of how, but perhaps, more importantly, why?

Our inspiration to build the cabin grew from decades of treasured times staying at a historic cabin, (belonging to some very generous friends), not far from here in the Homestake Valley and the Holy Cross Wilderness area.

From our beloved time at the Homestake cabin, grew a desire to share a similar experience with others; a place where one has the opportunity to connect with a more simple way of living, can make some discoveries, hear one’s own thoughts, create wonderful, lifelong memories with loved ones, and experience the Glory of God through his Creation.

Why they chose this property

Box Creek Cabin is truly a step away from the "hustle and bustle" of life. We chose the area of Twin Lakes because of its' stunning mountain vistas and because it feels like Colorado as it use to be; undeveloped and slower paced. The location of Box Creek Cabin is protected from the wind and harsh sun that one would find on the south facing side of the ridge, but is still in sight of the majesty of the tallest peaks in the Sawatch Range and surrounding Upper Arkansas Valley.
We have found Twin Lakes and the surrounding area to have a certain mystic that can not necessarily be quantified.

What makes this property unique

We can say that the location of this cabin is one of the most charmed and peaceful places we have ever had the opportunity to experience; a perfect place for personal renewal and hearing that "still, small voice".

"Be still, and know that I am God".
Psalm 46:10
