Romantic Box Creek Cabin at the Foot of Mt. Elbert-Family & Climber's Basecamp!

(Lake County Short Term Rental License#2024-085)

BOX CREEK CABIN is nestled in a quaint aspen grove, off a picturesque lane at the flanks of Mt. Elbert; a quintessential cabin in the woods. The cabin is the perfect base-camp for a mountain vacation for a family or the perfect romantic getaway for a couple. The cabin offers unlimited recreation and relaxation in the great outdoors as it is surrounded by 5 wilderness areas and over a dozen of Colorado's 14'ers.

The cabin is an "unplugged" property, meaning that we do not have WIFI or cable. We do have a television with a DVD player for those who wish to have a special movie night.

LOCATION:
Centrally located in the upper Arkansas Valley, the cabin is convenient to some of Colorado's favorite mountain towns.

Leadville is 20 minutes away; Buena Vista, 25 minutes; and Aspen is a 1 hour drive over scenic Independence Pass, (when open late May through mid-October)/

DESCRIPTION:
The cabin is ideally suited for times of rest, and equally well suited for adventures and recreation.

We stock a variety of reading materials and a large selection of board games. In addition, kids have a safe area all around the cabin to let their imaginations soar outdoors. The front covered porch provides inviting seating to enjoy the expansive views of Mt. Massive, Mt. Elbert, Homestake Ridge to the North and Mt. Sherman and the Mosquito Range to the east. We offer our guests two additional outdoor seating areas to enjoy the mountain views right from the cabin.

HIKING:
Hiking is right out the door with spectacular vistas only a minute's walk away down at the "Point" where there are two, two person swings to sit and enjoy either the Sawatch Range in all its glory or turn around and take in the Mosquito Range to the east in its entirety.

Hiking trails are too numerous to mention here but are within close proximity to the cabin. Simply Google "hiking trails in Lake County, CO" or "hiking trails in Twin Lakes, CO" and you will find an abundance of trails to explore in the area.

The south trail-head to climb Colorado's tallest 14'er, Mt. Elbert, is a 5 minute drive from the back door. Use the cabin as a base-camp for a dozen other fourteener climbs close by.

Halfmoon Valley and Creek are 20 minutes from the door with spectacular high alpine basins to explore.

FISHING:
The Arkansas River, a destination fishing venue, is a highly renowned trout fishery, just minutes from the cabin providing miles of accessible fishing for the fly fisherman or woman. For the other anglers in your group, fishing at the Forebay or at the two Twin Lakes may be just what is desired, offering relaxing lake fishing opportunities. There are numerous professional fishing guides in the region to help you plan your trip.

THINGS TO DO:
Twin Lakes Village is a 10 minute drive from the cabin, offering boat rentals, guided boat tours, water recreation, sandy beaches and water play, in addition to some super fun and charming eateries and stores including Tenderfoot Farms grocer with local meats and gourmet foods and gift shop, The General Store, Shooting Star Gallery, The Roadhouse Inn coffee shop, The Twin Lakes Inn for lunch and dinner, and also check out the food truck which serves amazing pizza!

The charming town of Buena Vista is 35 minutes to the south. Explore its many boutique shops, fine eateries, ice cream or Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, (just a little further south of town), with the beautiful Chalk Cliffs.

Or head north from the cabin and explore the historic mining town of Leadville with its distinctive shopping district along Harrison Street. Summer offers Boom Days with Burro Races, the Leadville 100 Race series, a 100 mile mountain bike race and a 100 mile foot race and winter offers the dog sledding, snowmobiling, alpine skiing at Ski Cooper or Copper Mtn. (35 minutes away), or ski joring in March among other things!

The Arkansas Valley also boasts some of the worlds most famous river rafting adventures. Find more information online at the various rafting sites. Type in Arkansas River Rafting, Arkansas Valley CO.

For those who enjoy exploration, Box Creek Cabin is situated on the edge of a rural, country neighborhood, with hundreds of square miles of undeveloped National Forest to the north, south, and west that is convenient for exploration by foot or bike. Perfection
We were looking for a cabin to unplug, and be a little away from towns. The pictures do not do this cabin justice. Every part of the cabin was complete attention to detail, to make you feel that you were almost in another time..but brand new. We will be booking again no doubt. This was exactly what we were hoping it would be.

Box Creek Cabin is the Real Deal
In a world of fast paced, mass production and ubiquitous housing with few actual skilled craftsman and builders this cabin is the opposite. Thoughtfully, uniquely, and skillfully crafted in every detail. Our stay was exactly what our family needed. Every need was met and more in how the hosts have equipped the cabin. It feels like entering a different world/time every time we entered the driveway. So thankful we chose to stay.

Perfect Getaway
This is a perfect getaway for anyone wanting to be unplugged from life for a bit! Cell service was still there, but no internet. At first we were concerned, but leaned into it. (They let me know prior about being unplugged). The only, well it’s not even a frustration, but whatever, we had was being so far away from town, but that’s on me more than anything, and really it’s only 15min from town, and we knew about it prior. And the drive was beautiful. The host’s were very responsive and even checked in on us during check in since we got there late . Plenty of fire wood and the other amenities. Quiet and peaceful, comfortable inside, even when it was freezing outside. Surrounded by snow, and got to see every star in the galaxy at night. My wife and I made breakfast every morning, and then went to ski at Copper (should have done Cooper instead), went dog sledding, shopping, and had wonderful memories. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to get away, but still be relatively close to town.

Cozy cabin for the holidays
We really enjoyed our stay in the cabin- very cozy and clean. Great place to warm up after a cold day out. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and there were lots of board games to keep us entertained. The property was also lovely, with several beautiful hikes in the area and views of the snow-covered peaks. We went into Leadville, which has several good restaurants, and had fun skiing at to Ski Cooper (25 min from the cabin). Thank you Anne for all your help and helpful tips!

Adorable cabin for mountain getaway!
Words can’t even describe how incredibly cute and thoughtfully curated this cabin is! Almost everything in the cabin was made by the owners, which makes this place truly special. We were lucky enough to visit during the peak of the fall colors. The cabin sits in an aspen grove, and the views from the front porch were spectacular. We could not have picked a better location to stay for our elopement!!!!! There are so many small touches that add whimsy, and even more subtle details added to make your stay enjoyable. From the luxurious towels and robes to the ample stock of firewood ready for the wood stove, we never wanted for anything! We are already talking about when we can come back! The owners also had plenty of recommendations for things to do and restaurants nearby. We really could not have had a more perfect stay. Thank you, Annie and Jon!

Lovely place
An adorable cabin in a somewhat secluded beautiful are close to numerous hiking trails in every direction. The cabin itself is wonderful, it’s small but has been thoughtfully built to have everything you could need. Many personal touches by the owners/builders that make it a sweet and cozy retreat. It was helpful that we had an suv as some of the surrounding roads were bumpy and Google maps sent us to the wrong nearby address on one of these slightly dangerous roads so follow the owners directions not Maps! Loved our stay:)

Loved It!
My husband, 2 of our children and I stayed at the Box Creek Cabin the weekend of the Leadville 100 MTB race. We enjoyed nearby hikes, bike rides and game nights. My husband loved the endless hot water in the shower after crossing the finish line and I got to relax on the covered front porch in an Adirondack chair during an afternoon rainstorm. The neighborhood is quiet, big plus. Annie and Jon are awesome! Quick to answer any questions. The water was unexpectedly shut off so that the water company could put in a fire hydrant. We got calls from both of them within minutes letting us know what was going on and were ready to jump in their car and bring us jugs of water. They even offered to let us use the showers in their home to get cleaned up.

The Box Creek Cabin was an absolute treat for relaxing and visiting the Twin Lakes area. From the decor to well stock game cupboard to special guest provisions, it has risen to the top of places to return to! In addition, to have the opportunity to meet Annie at she and Jon's gorgeouds store in Buena Vista was added value/frosting on the cake! Thank you for the love and care you give this special place. Amazing getaway for honeymooners
Boy did we just want to be alone :D We loved being unplugged in this lovingly-built, well-furnished home! It had everything we could need in a rental (very good, because it was off the beaten path!). Plenty of extra sheets and towels, cleaning supplies, even some spices and extras in the pantry. We loved snuggling in with a wood fire and listening to the rain. The owners were lovely and responsive (and even helped find something we left behind!)

About the host

Hosted by Annie and Jon Frykholm

Host profile image
We are Jon and Annie Frykholm and have been creating handcrafted, household furnishings and accessories for over thirty years. Several years ago we embarked on a new dream; to build a cabin that felt like it had stepped out of the Rocky Mountain past.
A great deal of thought and care was taken to create the vintage feel of Box Creek Cabin, which, we believe, gives a strong nod back to a charmed, bygone era. The cabin's post and beam infrastructure, wood paneling and pine flooring is entirely hand crafted utilizing local beetle-kill, lodgepole pine and spruce. These raw materials were hand collected and milled by Jon on his sawmill and processed in such a way as to take advantage of unique characteristics in the wood. In addition, Jon custom designed and constructed all of the windows to mimic those found in historic cabins.

It was equally important for us to construct the cabin with a small environmental footprint, preserving as many trees and native ground cover surrounding the cabin as was possible. In keeping with this, it was also a priority for us to maintain the environmental integrity throughout the cabin’s construction, using water based/plant based stains and linseed oil for the preservation of all wood surfaces, where feasible, (on all wood surfaces, except the kitchen and bathroom counters). So, this explains the nuts and bolts side of how, but perhaps, more importantly, why?

Our inspiration to build the cabin grew from decades of treasured times staying at a historic cabin, (belonging to some very generous friends), not far from here in the Homestake Valley and the Holy Cross Wilderness area.

From our beloved time at the Homestake cabin, grew a desire to share a similar experience with others; a place where one has the opportunity to connect with a more simple way of living, can make some discoveries, hear one’s own thoughts, create wonderful, lifelong memories with loved ones, and experience the Glory of God through his Creation.

Why they chose this property

Box Creek Cabin is truly a step away from the "hustle and bustle" of life. We chose the area of Twin Lakes because of its' stunning mountain vistas and because it feels like Colorado as it use to be; undeveloped and slower paced. The location of Box Creek Cabin is protected from the wind and harsh sun that one would find on the south facing side of the ridge, but is still in sight of the majesty of the tallest peaks in the Sawatch Range and surrounding Upper Arkansas Valley.
We have found Twin Lakes and the surrounding area to have a certain mystic that can not necessarily be quantified.

What makes this property unique

We can say that the location of this cabin is one of the most charmed and peaceful places we have ever had the opportunity to experience; a perfect place for personal renewal and hearing that "still, small voice".

"Be still, and know that I am God".
Psalm 46:10
